Yep it happened to one of my work computers that was running win 7. We just turned the screen on in the morning and were thoroughly confused.
I switched to Windows 10 about a month ago, and I haven't had any problems. It's actually pretty nice. However I check for updates on all commonly used software and reboot daily (not due to software updates, I just do). I did this with Linux too though. I don't think you should trust RAM clearing and dependency changes of any modern OS. Too much stuff going on at once not too.

If you leave your PC unattended, yes.
It keeps nagging you to let the upgrade through, eventually it comes up with a timer and just does it automatically if you don't decline it within 5 minutes or so, much like automatic updates will do.
