Is debian still good?
Im installing my first linux machine soon and I planned on using this OS but I heard the head dev died and sjws took over or something. Should I use fedora instead?

Yea, you can get really mad for not understanding gentoo as a first time linux user, or u can go for ubuntu, mint, and almost anything else, but not gentoo. Give gentoo a go after u get used to linux. Or be me, get linux on a server and keep win10 on ur personal laptop (ubuntu in VM too tho)
Debian is definitly not recommended for beginners as a desktop distro

try xubuntu as your first linux OS
its light and comfy, with huge support coming from being ubuntu based
and you get loads of customization
another alternative is manjaro, which is Arch based, but for normal people who like "it just works"

Debian may be a little too advanced. Try Ubuntu first, as a stepping stone.

debian wont even boot on my pc. ubuntu installed but it ran like shit. vanilla debian, kali and mint wouldnt get past the boot selection.

Debian is mainly free, even its kernels are[1]. Try the firmware[2] images for non-free drivers and packages.

To simplify, you just meant to say that's it's the other way around. Ubuntu is based on Debian.
Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu, sure, but mind you their LMDE release is based directly on Debian.
