Static ribbons are really lame but the ribbon menu can be hidden in Explorer, there's a button near the top right. Once it's minimized then clicking on the File / View menu buttons gives you the ribbon dropdown for that single time. Pretty decent IMO.

Why don't windows have any file manager with aesthetics like any GNU/Linux shit or Mac shit.

Is it really so hard to create a simple aesthetically pleasing file manager?

https://github.com/jjk-jacky/donnatella has almost all info that's on the website.

Screenshot in pic related. Description on website:
> An example of custom properties in action: in the top list, folders of PKGBUILDs I maintain, with a column for the pkgver and one for the last commit message on each folder, as commonly seen in github and other similar interfaces (since my PKGBUILDs are, of course, in a git repo). The bottom list has some video files, with columns for duration & codecs as well as a column for the MD5 hash of files, all available on-demand (click needed to refresh/load the properties).

I've used windows explorer, dolphin, pantheon-files, caja and nautilus.
I like caja best.
>fast and lightweight
>good search function
>reasonable search in folders by just typing letters
>good ftp assistant for setting up connection with ftp serves
>mutliple panes and tabs

The only downside is that it looks like windows explorer, really no frills and kinda ugly.

Pantheon files also works really well and I like the mac-like columns for opening folders. However, nautilus is the most aesthetically pleasing of the ones I used.
>>
>>53730725

>>
Dolphin.
It has all the usual things you'd expect
>split view
>tabs
>view modes
>links
>preview
>automatic or easy mounting of phones
>extensive settings

But the most important thing that makes it better than all the others is it has an embedded terminal.
Now this might seem silly at first, but you quickly realize that a lot of terminal actions is based on your files, so it makes a lot of sense.
Eg you want to go to a hidden folder without having them visible, easy.
Want to update a svn or git repository? easy.
All the glory of a terminal while still having the ease of using a file manager.

>>
>>53731020
Case sensitive is easier to implement.
You use the char value and sort after that.

Humans tend to group things together differently.
I suppose that you could change dolphin to work this way, but right now the grouping is
A a B b d Z, with the option to show folders first as they are a separate thing.
Sorting it to
A B Z a b d
doesn't make that much sense to most people.

I just want to take this moment to say that Finder is the biggest piece of shit I ever used.

It has graphical glitches, freezes up if you try to copy to a network drive that is not connected, there's no way to copy the path you're at and the "file copy" window is absolutely useless.

Everything has thumbnails in the file picker dialog.

But the motherfucking Finder file picker dialog also disables the parent application and is not movable or anything.

I swear to god I like my Mac but the people defending Finder because it has that stupid preview thing are living in a horrible case of Stockholm syndrome.
>>

I just remembered how "fisher pricey" Windows XP was, fuck.

>>
>>53731348
All other desktops that are faster usually don't have as much graphical eye candy.
If you turn that stuff off, it is relatively fast.
And just as any other DE, you can also run whatever window manager you'd want if you want something that is more responsive.

A lot of the performance issues has been related to the file search in kde4.
There have been a lot of bugs, like writing "sqrt(x)" in krunner would lead to evaluating the square root of x but also send the command to the file search which then searches all files on the disk for something.

I personally just disabled it all and used the superior fsrunner plugin.

But in plasma5, it is a lot better, so I guess all you have to keep in mind is the memory usage.
>>
>>53728450
Is there a way I can install this on Gnome 3? Linux newfag.
>>
>>53728450
sudo apt-get install dolphin.

You'll need to make it the default file manager. There are guides all over the net for this. Just don't expect it to look as pretty as in that picture.
>>
>>53731542
Yes. It will just install all the KDE libraries it needs to use but doesn't mean you need to switch your DE.
>>
>>53731542
Yes of course. But making it the default manager needs some tweaking
>>
I find the terminal better for file managing. Listing, filtering, compressed file listing, searching, head for text file preview, feh for single image preview, compressing, image optimization, multi renaming, checksums, multi image resizing, making webms from videos, finding text in files, resizing webms, looking at exifs, looking at video tracks, extracting subtitles.

Only use a file manager when I need to preview an image folder to find one and their names are meaningless.

File Explorer, it looks great, it has a lot of options that other file managers doesn't have, and Ribbon is pretty useful. Since the indexer and the Onedrive are well integrated in it, searching is super easily.
