Why isn't "say" included in perl by default? Why

Why isn't "say" included in perl by default?
Why do I have to type
use feature qw(say);
to use it?
Why don't tutorials teach with "say" instead of
print "A sentence that will look like shit without a newline character.\n


I ask, not because I think I know better that Larry Wall, but because I want to know if using "say" is a bad way of learning for some reason.
