I used 128 mb on Raspberry Pi 3.
Not Raspian tho, but ArchLinux with LXDE, i played youtube videos using mpsyt / mpv (mpv is not in raspbian repos)

maybe you tried on Raspbian 7. It hasn't got mpv in repos, but 8 has.

i think so, but after i learned not to use NOOBS i switched to ArchLinux (because i needed rasp as heavy-computing controller for something with only CLI, not GUI - Arduino was insufficent)
