Welcome to /flt/, we are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.
There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:
0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux
Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.
Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

>fearmongering a shit sytemd troll, you asked for it
Reminder that systemd is a fiasco.
Is developed by a elite and only the elite has the time and the funds to check the source code (by a corporation that makes business with the government). Many programs (therefore, Linux distributions) adopted systemd as a way to use other programs that systemd devoured. Making a cascade of dependence from which there is no escape.
Microsoft now could make possible a takeover on Linux thanks to systemD homogenizing Linux and the constant use of BSD license that allows privative software being built atop which strangles the open source community competition against takeovers from corporations ("embrace, extend, extinguish" all over).
Also is a security liability. Their proponents never speak about leaving free to attack the systemd-init that runs every daemon, and the shit is even connected to the network.
As init is the second most powerful program in linux, just below the kernel. The kernel code has so many eyes on it, but not that many on systemd. We bash about openssl/gnutls holes all the day, but none of the holes could be as nearly detrimental as a hole in pid 1, either accidental or intentional. Systemd serves as inetd and listens on network sockets.
The new systemd specific user switching is more insecure because PID1 constantly runs root programs with a massive attack surface. While only systemd-init is PID 1 and the rest of systemd does not run at PID1, everything uses systemd-init functions.
Add that it has su-like functionality in direct contact with programs that are network-facing and you have a security hole.
Do I face many risks if I wish to go from Debian Stable to Debian Testing?
Or is it mostly a good move?
>>53669494
The risk you face is it being "unstable".
Why do people say aptitude/apt is a bad package manager?
I don't get it, I think it's really good
Is it just meme-ing, elitism? Or legitimate reasons?
>>53669494
Ubuntu is based on Debian Unstable, that should tell you what you need to know.
>>53669478
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

>>53671911
>I haven't said anything negative on ncmpcpp
You said it is incompatible, which it isn't.
If you really have such a retarded system of storing your files then just symlink all of your locations in to one place, point mpd/ncmpcpp to that directory and set ncmpcpp to update everytime it open.
Your tiresome backpeddling is evidence enough you don't care though. Again, your lack of knowing how to do something with one tool doesn't mean another tool is better, it just means you are ignorant about what your existing tools can do.

What do I install to have a proper clipboard in linux?
I have selection-to-clipboard loaded under URxvt.perl-ext-common and while it's great I can now copy from terminal to browser I've noticed 2 major issues with clipboard over all.
1. If I copy something, anything, from I think anything, X or CLI, onto the clipboard then close the thing I copied it from before pasting it I lose it.
2. Not all things seem to copy to the correct clipboards, eg. if I using Thunar right click on something in dropbox and say copy public link, I am able to paste it into my browser but cannot paste it into my terminal (for irc etc). I have to first paste it into my browser then recopy it out of the browser for it to work to the terminal.
Both extremely annoying.
Hey, guys. I'm using an external audio card and ALSA, although detecting it, says "This sound device does not have any controls". With Pulse Audio it works, but I don't really need any of PA functions. Is there a way to unmute with ALSA?

IU do use shift insert. When I say I cannot paste it into my terminal I mean it's on the wrong clipboard, ie. I 'copy public link to clipboard' if I attempt to paste it into my terminal with shift+insert it uses the last thing I had on my clipboard instead, but if I paste it in my browser it works properly.

>>53674423
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

>Defends against 0-day
Only grsecurity provides protection against zero-day and other advanced threats that buys administrators valuable time while vulnerability fixes make their way out to distributions and production testing. This is made possible by our focus on eliminating entire bug classes and exploit vectors, rather than the status-quo elimination of individual vulnerabilities.
>In any kind of shared computing environment, whether it be simple UID separation, OpenVZ, LXC, or Linux-VServer, the most common and often easiest method of full system compromise is through kernel exploitation. No other software exists to mitigate this weakness while maintaining usability and performance.
>Goes beyond access control
Unlike the LSMs you're used to, grsecurity tackles a wider scope of security problems. While access control has its place, it is incapable of dealing with many real-life security issues, especially in webhosting environments where an attacker can fraudulently purchase local access to the system. To see what you're missing out on by relying on just access control, see our feature comparison matrix.
A major component of grsecurity is its approach to memory corruption vulnerabilities and their associated exploit vectors. Through partnership with the PaX project, creators of ASLR and many other exploit prevention techniques -- some now imitated by Microsoft and Apple, grsecurity makes many attacks technically and economically infeasible by introducing unpredictability and complexity to attempted attacks, while actively responding in ways that deny the attacker another chance.
Sounds like a good plan for me though. AUR should have an automated patch for this

>Keystroke Fingerprinting Is Raising Concerns, Possible Kernel/Wayland Solution
With companies like Google and Facebook having developed keystroke fingerprinting technology to identify users based upon how long they press keys on the keyboard and the time between key presses, this poses new challenges for those wanting to stay completely anonymous on the Internet. A developer is trying to come up with a solution down to the display server or kernel level.
By analyzing a user's keystrokes, it can be revealing to advertisers, banks, universities, and other institutions wishing to track users. Keystroke fingerprinting has raised concerns particularly among Tor users on the Internet. A developer is hoping to see work done on a system-wide solution for anti-keystroke fingerprinting.
A proposal mailed out on Wednesday is hoping to see work done at the kernel level for caching keystrokes and introducing random delays before passing them on to user-space. The other option being explored is hooking it in at the display server level with Wayland or X.Org for introducing these random (tiny) delays on input events. You can read the proposal in full here, which was sent to the Wayland mailing list among other project lists.

I've played with GNU/Linux before with Ubuntu, xubuntu and Mint, but now I'm humoring the idea again and part of me seeks the novelty of trying something else.
I'm still an idiot though (I once tried debian minimal and fucked it up. Probably not too badly, but it didn't JUST WERK so I gave up.) so I'm not sure if I shouldn't bother.

>>53675645
Did you try Manjaro? Fedora?
So I did a few tests with different DEs and drivers. I have an r9 280x, I'm wondering if performance is truly dependant on it.
In any case, seeing as many people love linux distros compared to Windows/OSX in regards to performance, I tried KDE, Gnome 3.18, Unity, MATE and Cinnamon. I know XFCE is there too, that's pretty much what I default to ocassionally.
I experienced that:
-Gnome 3.18 performs terribly, animations are jerky at random times with open source drivers. A tiny bit better performance on Wayland. Proprietary ones give me artifacts on screen.
-KDE is not as slow as a year ago when I tried it with a 6850, but still on par in terms of performance. Some animations being skipped here and there.
-Unity works smooth with no trouble, other than Chromium going completely blank and having to reopen it for some reason.
-MATE just gives some nasty tearing on Chromium unless I strictly use Compton
-Cinnamon works pretty well until you switch workspaces, or the "expose" thing. It shows its ugliness there.
If I use proprietary drivers, these mostly work smooth, however manually enabling vsync on the desktop to avoid tearing give me a pretty crappy experience as well. I know well it shouldn't necessarily be my GPU because it can handle whatever else just fine. Even hackintosh works with it smooth as it needs to. So it's kind of really weird that it behaves like this. Has anyone experienced this with similar hardware?
