There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:
0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

Reminder that systemd is a fiasco.
Is developed by a elite and only the elite has the time and the funds to check the source code (by a corporation that makes business with the government). Many programs (therefore, Linux distributions) adopted systemd as a way to use other programs that systemd devoured. Making a cascade of dependence from which there is no escape.
Microsoft now could make possible a takeover on Linux thanks to systemD homogenizing Linux and the constant use of BSD license that allows privative software being built atop which strangles the open source community competition against takeovers from corporations ("embrace, extend, extinguish" all over).
Also is a security liability. Their proponents never speak about leaving free to attack the systemd-init that runs every daemon, and the shit is even connected to the network.
As init is the second most powerful program in linux, just below the kernel. The kernel code has so many eyes on it, but not that many on systemd. We bash about openssl/gnutls holes all the day, but none of the holes could be as nearly detrimental as a hole in pid 1, either accidental or intentional. Systemd serves as inetd and listens on network sockets.
The new systemd specific user switching is more insecure because PID1 constantly runs root programs with a massive attack surface. While only systemd-init is PID 1 and the rest of systemd does not run at PID1, everything uses systemd-init functions.
Add that it has su-like functionality in direct contact with programs that are network-facing and you have a security hole.
Do I face many risks if I wish to go from Debian Stable to Debian Testing?
Or is it mostly a good move?

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU

normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system

From my experience using pacman and apt, pacman was a lot easier and simpler to use in some cases. Both package managers have their merits and shortcomings. Try them out yourself to see which one you like more.

One thing is the header sent to request the webpage, what addons can block is not the exchange of IP, but other kind of information.

Hey guys, I'm new to Debian.
I'm trying to open Nautilus as root through the terminal. Installed gksu through aptitude. However when I trygksu nautilus
nothing happens and the terminal moves on to the next line, as if it had already done what i told it to do.
If I try gksu nautilus instead, it throws me this error:(nautilus:20470): Gtk-WARNING **: Failed to register client: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.gnome.SessionManager was not provided by any .service files
How do I fix it?

I've recently installed Arch but the File manager only shows the 1 non-swap partition.

sda3 is missing on the File manager. How do extend 1st partition or make it show up?
Can I move my root folder, or parts of it, like /var/cache /usr/ and /bin/ to an external device and still work as a system?
I'm on a liveusb and wish to pair it with a and SD card or whatever I have around that I can use to preserve different desktops.

I use Xubuntu because I can go from a blank HDD to a fully functioning workstation, with all of the applications I want installed and configured (and the handful that I don't want, removed) in about half an hour. Free of hassle as well as free of cost.

Hey guys, I'm still experiencing lag when I fullscreen twitch streams on Iceweasel, even when using PepperFlash/FreshPlayer
Already checked here and it appears I'm using the most up to date Chromium version, so PepperFlash is working.

Is there a reason why Clementine hangs at 99% updating library? I duel boot Windows and Arch so I wanted to use the same music player for both out of laziness, but it works fine for Windows but does nothing on Linux. My music's on my NTFS partition if that makes a difference. It can play files just fine but never finishes adding them to the library.

If you really have such a retarded system of storing your files then just symlink all of your locations in to one place, point mpd/ncmpcpp to that directory and set ncmpcpp to update everytime it open.

Just says "Could not resolve property : lineargradient xxxx" (where xxxx is a varying number) a bunch of times. Also a "libpng warning: iCCP: known incorrect sRGB profile." I'm guessing I have an unknown filetype or something, Cmus crashes every time I add my library to it so I'm guessing it's related. Would rather not add every file manually obviously.

Ah I think I found the problem, or at least a problem. There's 5 files at the top of the file manager that Clementine is unable to open for whatever reason. I'll try to move them outside the music directory and see if that does anything.

What do I install to have a proper clipboard in linux?
I have selection-to-clipboard loaded under URxvt.perl-ext-common and while it's great I can now copy from terminal to browser I've noticed 2 major issues with clipboard over all.
1. If I copy something, anything, from I think anything, X or CLI, onto the clipboard then close the thing I copied it from before pasting it I lose it.
2. Not all things seem to copy to the correct clipboards, eg. if I using Thunar right click on something in dropbox and say copy public link, I am able to paste it into my browser but cannot paste it into my terminal (for irc etc). I have to first paste it into my browser then recopy it out of the browser for it to work to the terminal.
Both extremely annoying.

Starting up either ibus-daemon or fcitx makes my cpu shit all over itself to the point that the computer becomes unusable (htop shows 100% cpu by /usr/lib/xorg-server/Xorg, of all things). Installed Debian on my laptop a few months ago (replacing Gentoo). It's an OK laptop, 16GB ram, i7 CPU, etc, but lately it's been running like total ass. While typing this message, the javascript has locked up for 0.5 seconds multiple times. It's fucking miserable. Is this Iceweasel's fault or is Debian just garbage?
I don't really want to go back to Gentoo. I didn't boot for 3 months and trying to resolve dependency conflicts after updating was enough to make me switch to Debian.

I'm still an idiot though (I once tried debian minimal and fucked it up. Probably not too badly, but it didn't JUST WERK so I gave up.) so I'm not sure if I shouldn't bother.

So I did a few tests with different DEs and drivers. I have an r9 280x, I'm wondering if performance is truly dependant on it.
In any case, seeing as many people love linux distros compared to Windows/OSX in regards to performance, I tried KDE, Gnome 3.18, Unity, MATE and Cinnamon. I know XFCE is there too, that's pretty much what I default to ocassionally.
I experienced that:
-Gnome 3.18 performs terribly, animations are jerky at random times with open source drivers. A tiny bit better performance on Wayland. Proprietary ones give me artifacts on screen.
-KDE is not as slow as a year ago when I tried it with a 6850, but still on par in terms of performance. Some animations being skipped here and there.
-Unity works smooth with no trouble, other than Chromium going completely blank and having to reopen it for some reason.
-MATE just gives some nasty tearing on Chromium unless I strictly use Compton
-Cinnamon works pretty well until you switch workspaces, or the "expose" thing. It shows its ugliness there.
If I use proprietary drivers, these mostly work smooth, however manually enabling vsync on the desktop to avoid tearing give me a pretty crappy experience as well. I know well it shouldn't necessarily be my GPU because it can handle whatever else just fine. Even hackintosh works with it smooth as it needs to. So it's kind of really weird that it behaves like this. Has anyone experienced this with similar hardware?

Looking through the contents of net-tools, I noticed ifconfig and then I remembered that we're supposed to use ip now. The package on Arch doesn't have the /etc/network/interfaces file neither. This is kind of confusing, I still can't figure out what that interfaces file is doing and why I don't need it on Arch.
