Is your computer ready for virtual reality, /g/?

>NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater
>Intel i5 4590 processor equivalent or greater
>8GB+ RAM

These are the minimum specs required.
>>
>>53658355
No, but I don't care about VR.
>>
>>53658355
Got two VR ready PCs, with 980s.

2x Vives and 1x Rift en route.

>>53658379
>I haven't tried VR yet.
>>
>i7 5820K
>980ti SLI
>16GB ram @ 2400mhz
>custom watercooling loop

idk am i ready B)
>>
>>53658401
What HMD you getting? Better be a Vive.
>>
Nope
>>
>>53658409
you know it senpai
>>
>>53658423
I genuinely feel really sorry for anyone getting a Rift.

They're going to have so much purchase regret when they see all the news, youtube videos, etc of people raving about how incredible room scale VR is.
>>
>>53658433
i just want to fuck cute anime girls desu, i bought the virtuadolls thing to go with it lmao
>>
>early adopters
>>
>>53658447
Virtuadolls?

>>53658449
If you'd tried a Vive, you'd be early adopting too.
>>
>>53658388
>I haven't tried VR yet
I have, it's just nothing that I like to waste money and time on. It's nothing that I feel would add anything to my life. I imagine it gets old very quickly.

I-i hope I can at least run some basic stuff before polaris/pascal releases
>>

What HMD did you use?

The only good one is the HTC Vive.

If you haven't tried that, you haven't tried VR.
>>
>virtual reality

>>
>>53658388

You know, it is possible for people to just have no use for VR. I'm getting it, but I would never recommend it to people that just use their computers for generic stuff.
>>
>>53658515
Literally just that, the HTC Vive. Yes, it was impressive, but to me it's just one of those things that I get used to too quickly to buy. I wouldn't know what to do with it anyway.
>>
>>53658551
Then you're extremely narrow minded.

You're like the people who thought the internet was a useless gimmick that would never apply to them.
>>
>>53658355
>i5 4690k
I guess I need to buy skylake.
>>
no point in doing VR until everything looks like real life

>implying 970 is gong to to do this

enjoy ur pixels and aliasing in a virtual world faggots, i'll enjoy real life and fucking ur gf
>>
>>53658611
>Completely ignores that different people have different needs
>You are extremely narrow minded

Stop romanticizing your half-baked nerd technology. Really, what's the use even for those kind of devices right now? Playing some games? Watching a 3d movie with guaranteed headaches? I don't see it. Why should everybody want that? I don't give a shit about computer games.
>>
>>53658645
>being on /g/ and not caring about the biggest technological change in decades.

why are you even here? to talk about iphones?
>>
>>53658679
my uncle bought me a macbook for easter what a fucking cheap cunt i told him i wanted an iphone 6s plus fruity edition
>>
My computer is ready but my wallet isn't. Both the Rift and Vive cost over $1000 in Australia, fuck that noise.

I'd rather wait instead and see how the 2nd and 3rd gen headsets turn out.
>>
>>53658679
yes
>>
>>53658679
So you don't know what to do with it right now?

mirror one screen to another, watch videos in a perfect environment.

that right now is a number 1 for me, especially if they get good lcds/oleds in them.

beyond that, it all depends on the games you play or how you want to consume media. live sports and live shows are going to start offering vr seats, this would be nice if they work.
>>
>>53659096
>mirror one screen to another, watch videos in a perfect environment.
I've heard multiple people complain about headaches when watching 24 Hz content with these things. So I just stick to the display I already have.

>beyond that, it all depends on the games you play or how you want to consume media.
Not interested in games at all.

>live sports and live shows are going to start offering vr seats, this would be nice if they work.
Not interested in that either. Also, all of that are just concepts, none of that is actually available beyond demos.
>>
>>53658645
so you cant think at all... ok
it all comes down to the media the format gets.

teens will love it for one reason only, porn.
your own screen no one else can watch? perfect for viewing porn in your parents house.

kids and young adults will love it for games

older people will love it for the way media gets consumed could change. i imagine a fuck load of people want to go front row for a foot ball game, but cant afford it or hate the crowd, well now you are able to sit front row, or any number of vr points, and watch the game, when shit gets moves, you move your head to watch...

if the Superbowl supports something like this, its over, vr will be a mainstream device and these conversations will be done.

which device becomes king... that will likely be whichever uses usb 2 and whichever one the least hassle to set up.

high end gamers may have the usb3 ports to spare, but normal people, no... they just don't as their computers, while still able to do everything they need from media consumption to email, they just haven't gotten a new computer as they haven't had to.
>>
>>53659182
people also bitched about every single other advancement ever made in computers and tech. i dont see how you would get a headache from watching a video unless the video itself was shittly made.

and at least for the all concepts, largely because vr is stuck to the dev kits or phones at the moment, facebook bought oculas for a reason and it wasn't gaming.
>>
>>53658433
room scale is not going to work till you have wireless setups, and will not work if you... you know... don't have fucking room for it.

i see the room scale as an added cost that doesn't help at all currently.
>>
I quit eagerly waiting a year and a half ago, I got my dose with DK1. I'm going to wait until next year sometime then buy an omni or a cyberith plus gpu plus touch and whatever else.

Dammit if only I didn't wait a few weeks and paid for a headset through the Kickstarter I'd have a rift for free
>>
I have GTX275 and gentoo on it.
>>
>>53658513
i would have held off till next round of vr if thats what you had.
>>
How much does HTC pay you for these downright pathetic attempts at making VR sound like anything more than a shitty gimmick, Rakesh?
>>
>>53658355
Nope and thats ok with me. I dont play many games these days. If i want something to be virtual reality i just go find it in real reality.
>>
>>53658433
I'm certainly going to get a kick out of people falling on their coffee table, shelves and tripping over their wires. Lighthouse is better but literally nobody has enough room because unless your setup is on a 3000 dollar laptop and you use a football field plus subtle redirected walking you need to be confined to something like an omni. Here's hoping something better and cheaper comes out
>>
>>53658639
you never had it on your head, the last vr i had was a worst case scenario, 320x180 multiplayer with the game sin, you do not notice jaggies or aliasing or screen door when its moving.

however cutting you off from the world, the perfect viewing distance, and another axis of movement? that was doable 15 years ago + and is finally coming home now.

>>53658693
im waiting on the 720p per eye or 1080 split before i get vr.

i cant imagine any computer handling what rift and vive ask for, and i cant imagine it within the next 3-5 years either without severely reducing game graphics, however, you push the resolution lower, you suddenly can, sure you could run the vive or rift at a lower res, but try it on your normal monitor, does the resulting video even look good? try it, 720p on a 1080 screen...

non native resolutions look respectively worse then that same lower resolution at the same size screen but running native.
>>
>>53658355
My phone is ready for VR, and my boboVR headset is coming in the mail. That's all that matters
>>
>>53659182
>watching 24hz content
They probably had the entire thing set to 24hz. If you put a pane (like a simulated display/cinema) with your content @ 24hz in a simulated room @ 90hz it's perfectly fine.

>>
>>53659494
Then I could just as well watch it on an actual screen without having to look at some shitty 3d models.
>>
>>53658355
Can't wait, went for the Vive because roomscale.

Better to wait for second gen with higher screen resolution and eye tracking. But I have run out of patience.
>>
>>53659626
Except you can have as many as you want, in sizes you want without paying extra.
Also that virtual room could be anything you want, including stuff you couldn't do IRL.

Wait for cv2 at that point bruh

Or at least cv 1.5 from some new company

Product cycle is gonna be 2 years

We're all ready for VR, it's just a matter of how much detail you want out of your VR
>>
>>53659596
I have a Pleb Vr Headset with a Note3 and a GearVR with an s7 and they are both OK.
The Pleb Vr is a bit slower and heavier and a little less immersive but it works and the GearVr is more immersive and not that heavy.
But dont expect any cool gaming on this, I've developed for this and you need to go full N64 graphics to do anything
>>
>i7-5820k @ 4.4ghz

why so high?
But yes mine is.
>>

1080x1200 @90hz per eye takes a good but of GPU horsepower.

I'm surprised they aren't higher minimum specs

I'd probably like it if I tried it, but I don't really give a shit about gaymes or being a hipster, nor do I have an empty room big enough for its non-gayming applications.

Regardless, while this generation of VR will be better than its predecessors for the home market, it will still be shit because all it only addresses one sense and games are too unrealistic/unimmerseive anyway.

Wait for some more applications and price undercutting, Jesus. First gen devices are nearly always overpriced and quickly phased out by far cheaper iterations.

dk1 and dk2 are first gen. I don't have much confidence in cv1, but then again I don't have much confidence in oculus...

GTX 980 is a placeholder, and the PSU will only be bought if I have the money to build a cheap and memey lan computer. All the stuff purchased in the below build is currently in the computer above.

>>53660459
why the fuck would you get all that other shit + a fucking 960?

Because I don't game. I will be upgrading to pascal/polaris when they release for VR desktop use. But I still don't think I will game much.
