So /g/, let's say I want to create a simple chat application but with modern and arbitrary UI (not tied to the underlying OS). What would be my best choice?

I'm considering either Qt, WPF or those embedded browsers like Node.js or Chromium Embedded Framework and such.

I already have basics about the first two, but I'm not sure if they are flexible enough for what I want to achieve. Do you use any? What would you recommend?

Qt. Those standalone web apps are pure cancer.

Yeah, that's why I made the thread. I would have started blindly with that framework if I didn't hear so many bad things about it.

ummm.... you do know that Mono (the Linux implementation of .Net) doesn't support WPF? (source: http://www.mono-project.com/docs/gui/wpf/ )

Curses
ncurses if you are feeling adventurous

TIL. But anyway while cross-platform is nice, it's not required. What I meant by 'not tied' is 'not visually similar';
