Just installed fresh Win 7 . Everything works fine, should I update it with Windows Update, or did I fall for the botnet meme?
>>
It's rough, because eventually you're going to need an up to date system if you want at the very least some security. But plenty of the newest updates include telemetry and that stupid popup that tells you to update to windows 10 or else you will be a failure at life.
>>
>>53657740
I just updated my win7 until a week before they started the skynet updates

No you don't. You need a firewall and that's it.

Why not upgrade to the latest and greatest OS - Windows 10? It's a free update and will let you get more out of your machine.

I came from Win 10 . I wiped all my HDD and installed a fresh Win 7.

Can anyone confirm?

Heard many, many people around these parts saying that 8.1 is faster than 7. Wonder how true that is aside from boot times.

I would go back to Windows 7, but then I remembered that:

1. It has poor font rendering
2. No workspaces
3. Classic theme produces tearing

I also don't know how it'd work over SSD, since it's an old enough system. If it needs any tweaks or even knows what TRIM is.
>>
>>53657855
I'm dual booting 7 and 10. They aren't any faster than the other on an SSD.
>>
>>53658190
>It has poor font rendering
Windows in general has poor font rendering.
>>
>>53658190
Autistic.
>>
>>53658190
Windows 7 has trim support (enabled by default if you install it on a SSD). Font rendering in 8 and 10 is worse than 7. As for CLassi theme that's because it doesn't use VSync, unlyke the Aero one.

Have you compared all 3 with cleartype on? They're the same blurry shit.
>>

Yeah I know. I used linux for a while, which is why I'm saying this. I'm not going to use 8.1 or 10 at gunpoint but honestly sometimes I miss the old days.

VMware
>>
>>53658256
Yes, 8 and 10 besides the normal 7-like one also has grayscale AA, so you end up with a hodgepodge. Programs use both, unpredictably. Also 1 (the number) is fucked up badly (look in Unistall or change programs in CPanel)

And an example of grayscale AA in 10, take a look at Personalize word, how sharper it looks on 7 than on 10. On 10 it's too soft.

>>53658302

>>
>>53658312
I will still say they both are terrible.
>>
>>53658333
Left is better in this case, also 7 allows you to adjust lightness and colorisation. 10 does not allow you to change the grayscale one at all.
>>
>>53657740
Do security updates even fucking matter if I have a fully updated internet browser? It's the only thing that accesses the internet anyways.

Most of the updates have to do with attackers having physical access to the computer or using Internet Explorer. Do the updates help a 3rd party browser at all if I have UAC set to max?
>>
>>53658351
Can't you turn it off?
>>
>>53658403
No. The font settings in 10 adjust only the 7-like rendered fonts (inside explorer for instance, like the filename) not the grayscale one (context menus, window title, or some other windows (lie the file properties one))
>>
>>53658403
>>53658420
Unless you talk about completely turning font smoothing off, I don't know about that. It may still not affect 'modern apps' like Settings. But that looks just awful on LCDs
>>
>>53657740

Not at all. And when you have everything blocked from sending and receiving except programs you have selected, microsoft's so called security updates are completely unnecessary.
>>
>>53658190
If you don't like the font rendering, you can fix it by installing Mactype.
>>
>>53658822
Mactype is good for hDPI, has noticeable issues with kerning though.

gdipp is better, but really old.
>>
>>53658646
>when you have everything blocked from sending and receiving except programs you have selected, microsoft's so called security updates are completely unnecessary.
Thanks.

I've been browsing on an unpatched XP VM with a similar configuration for months just to test out if I actually need antivirus/updates. Haven't gotten hit with anything so far.

Your input just cements the fact that AVs and security patches are useless to everyone except maybe businesses and retards who click on everything.
>>
>>53658929
About 4, maybe 5 years ago I used some version of Windows 7 SP1 without updating it. Well before all this botnet shit got popular. Didn't have a single problem.
>>
>>53657740
If you use Windows you must update to Windows 10. The only motive not to do so is conflict with your devices. If you use Windows 7/8/8.1/10 you'll be watched by Microsoft if your system is up to date. If not you'll probably be infected by a worm or something if you don't have proper defence like firewall and stuff. Also the probability of BSOD is higher in outdated systems.

Don't know if it is faster in benchmarks and so on, but win8.1 runs a lot better on my T420 laptop.

Windows 7 uses much more gpu power for desktop composition with the aero theme enabled. (which is needed for vsync)
And that makes my T420 run hella hot since the iGPU is utter shit.

For laptops Win8.1 introduced a lot of improvements to battery life in the kernel, so if one wants 1-2 hours more out of the battery they should use win8.1 over 7.

In general my T420 also runs a lot cooler on Win 8.1, and there isn't really much difference in software performance compared to when I was using 7.

OP, in order to avoid fresh install in the future. I'd recommend creating customized .wim with deployment tool:
- With that You can create unattended file for installation and skip every manual part during install. Just run bootable Windows, plug another drive with .xml file and You're ready to go.
- In audit mode, You can customize things which You would do after installation. This is applying patches, installing tools (your preference may vary).

Using windows update at start is a great pain. I'd recommend using MBSA/SCM tool to verify if every security update is installed. For mass installation there is 3rd party WSUSoffline tool, which downloads and applies the patches. The way Windows Update works is painful, unless You are running Your own WSUS server.

My questions:
- That reminds me, is there any reason to install anything else than security patches?
- There are some appmanagers for Windows in the same manner as most of *nix systems have. What is Your opinion?

Going back, I can't find the perfect DE. I felt more work should be put towards just one rather than have 20.
