I live in Chicago, and a while back they installed a big sculpture that the artist called "Cloudgate". To a first approximation, nobody has ever called it this. They call it the Bean, because it looks like a giant, shiny bean. The artist was really butthurt over this, but nobody cares what he thinks and he can't do anything about it.

The letters of an acronym when said as a word don't necessarily have to be enunciated in the same way they are in the word they are started with, as has already been demonstarted. GIF as jif just sounds smoother, more familiar. I guess I’ll let my linguist self go free here:
Both pronunciations are technically correct.
On one hand, we have people pronouncing the word “gif” with a soft “g”, i.e. “jif”. Those people are pronouncing this word as they were told it is pronounced, and they use the argument of authority to justify their pronunciation.
Or the other hand, there is the argument of the logical pronunciation, according to the reading rules of the language people are speaking. Depending on their country and your mothertongue, they will however tend to pronounce this word in different ways:
“gif” with a hard “g” in English-speaking countries, “jif” (without the “d” sound) in French-speaking countries,…
This is normal and totally natural, and there are high chances that one day it will be the standard pronunciation.
Both arguments are equals, and only time will make one side correct and the other deprecated.
For those who speak French here, I recommend you to go watch Linguisticae’s video on this matter, it’s basically what I’ve said, but better explained.

>>53654955
Just keep eating your egg whites.. you can say it however you like... even if it really is soft 'g'
>>53654195

Fact 1: Gif is only one letter off of "gift", the closest example of a pronouncable normal word. You can't have a better similarity without making the change of at least one letter, so ones with one letter change are closest. People can use "gift" as an obvious example on how to pronounce it, they only have to stop before the last letter and it's done.
Fact 2: The first letter in the acronym "gif" stands for a word which is pronounced with a hard G.

if you pronounced it from the start with a soft “g”, that means your readings standards differ from whom you call “newcomers”. If English is your mothertongue, then you must have interpreted it at first as a word derived from a French root such as in “giraffe” instead of an English root such as in “gift”
But other people, for other reason, might as well consider this word to be read as a word from an English root. These are two different interpretations that are equally true
>>53655064
>I can assure you that I was never "told" how to pronounce GIF
I’m talking here about the fact that the creator of the format says it is said with a soft “g” instead of a hard one is considered as a way of being told how it is pronounced. Maybe you were pronouncing “gif” as “jif” from the beginning, as the anon I quoted above and>>53655096, and the fact that the creator of the GIF stated that it is pronounced “jif” comforted you in this idea.
Once again, I am not saying that saying “jif” or “gif” with either a hard or a soft g is wrong or not, only the years will be able to tell, there are simply different factors that make some people pronounce it one way and others the other way.
>>53651601
