I had that same system and I was able to run it with the meme card perfectly fine. You have to tweak the settings a bit though (change some of the filters and benchmark).

Finally moved on to triple channel RAM (I know it's capable of 9-10-9-27 @900), an SSD for my boot drive.

Do you not know how ram works? if you have 4 gm of ram, your system uses about 2 in idle and simple processes. if you have 8 gb of ram, your system uses about 3-4 gb of ram. and if you have 16 gb of ram, your system uses about 5-8 gb of ram.
even though the processes are the same. if you have more ram, windows just uses more of it, hostfile processes and such. you have no benefit to that.
tldr: if you had 8 gb of instead of 32 gb, your processes would just use 4-6 gb, and you would never notice a difference.

I know, it has to be 64 bit, but even then this thing is designed solely to display one program and it takes 200mb of ram to run.
The only thing that I kind of want right now is a matching BenQ 1080p monitor to replace my old Viewsonic monitor that I use as a secondary, but I'm fine with it. It'd just make my battlestation a bit more aesthetically pleasing.

Worst bang for buck build I've done ever. Was desperate for an upgrade before the 980Ti and 300 series cards were out, fell for the full dx12 support meme though the card has been serving me well with DX11 (until pascal is out and they drop the ball on maxwell).
I wanted the GPU to be powerful enough to run a VR HMD comfortably at the time without needing to upgrade shortly after.
It should run the HTC Vive reasonably well when overclocked, as for monitors I'd rather stick to my current setup and wait on 4K monitors to drop in price. It'd be another 3 years by then there would probably be a decent mid range GPU for 4K.
i7 4790 was a poor choice for gaming, an overclocked i5 4590k would have been better, though I occasionally utilize hyperthreading in other applications.
