I like awesome wm but it can be a little hard to configure at first, as for DE I like xfce and gnome.

If you wanna do any sort of software dev, vim+awesome is fantastic.

Not really, it does help, but the configuration things, at least from what I've used, it's preety much copy paste or really simple lines of code, I've been using awesome for over 3 months and all I know about lua is that the comment lines go with --.
I've tried i3 but I was too lazy to configure it, then I've tried and started using awesome because I liked the way it came out of the box, and after a couple days of use I started to configure it.
The config file does look kind of overwhelming at first, after reading some stuff on the arch and awesome wiki it's not that hard. It also helps that most widgets and usefull stuff like vicious, or the lain stuff already exist.
