They're reaching limits of moor law, they have to make improvements through architecture now.
Maybe it will mean more innovation/breakthrough in architecture.
Let's hope it allows AMD to be more competitive.

How is AMD not competitive?

They are the only company that sell a quad core CPU for less than $100 and a octa core CPU for less than $600.

I mean in term or performance. That would be cool if AMD had a product that can compete with intel best CPUs. Maybe intel top notch CPU wouldn't cost a grand.

That's exactly how.
They're just too incompetent to think that anything apart from the core count matters.

The last time Intel actually innovated was in the mid 90's.
If they were at all capable of developing something new and useful, they would have by now.

Hell, 70% of computing innovation in the past 2 decades has come from AMD or as a direct result of their innovations being implemented and used to their potential.

Zen will likely give AMD a sizeable cash injection, allowing them to spread their wings a little. So long as they don't pussyfoot around and intentionally wait to release more powerful APUs, or HBM enabled APUs, then they should continue to grow a little, as the low to mid-end Laptop market is screaming for that balance between computing and graphics performance, and an APU can provide both in buckets in the mobile market. Of course the one major problem being heat (Which is a problem with all sub $900 laptops) but so long as the manufacturers put the effort in to get an effective cooling solution on the go, then they should be welcome in the market.

Right and wrong.

In the server market, core count matters more than anything else, as the individual workload handled by each core is so insignificant as to where IPC is nearly irrelevant.

However, it's the flipside of that coin in the consumer market. The attitude towards software development is one that just pushes a product out the door as soon as possible, so it cannot be properly developed to make use of multiple threads.

>inb4 "WAHH IT'S THE SOFTWARE DEVS FAULT THAT AMD IS SHIT"

Multithreading benefits everyone.
