What GNU/Linux distro do you use and why?
>>
debian

doesn't break ever

backport software where you need the latest version (it's super easy)

literally no drawbacks
>>
>>53637386
I've been thinking about using debian, how is the U.I.? I feel like some distros have clunky interfeaces
>>
>>53637420
Get it in whatever flavour. Or do a netinstall and install whatever DE/WM you desire. I use cinnamon, it's sensible and mostly does what I expect, and there are good themes - the default looks a bit childish.

Gentoo because it makes me feel superior to "just werks"-tier ubuntu users and archfags who couldn't compile a binary even if it was shoved halfway up their ass.
>>
>>53637354
At home I use Ubuntu on my laptop since it just werks(tm)

At work I have an EC2 instance that I use as my desktop. Runs Amazon Linux
>>
>>53637354
Fedora (Gnome3), it gets out of my way, I like systemd, kernel updates have been great lately, like the community, the documentation, the style/appearance, moderate riceability.. I feel at home.
>>
Currently using Fedora. Decided to jump from Linux Mint since it became a botnet and I have never really used a distro from the red hat family.

Mint for my desktop and CentOS on work servers.
>>
>>53637354
Mint on my laptop. It's literally the only distro that doesn't crash, if I just update it using the default presets. Ironically, my laptop is a Dell Ubuntu model. Go figure.
>>
>>53637354
Arch because I like customizing my computer, but not Gentoo because I don't need a special kernel or want to wait years for packages to compile.

I'm still learning my way around Linux in general, so a distro with this level of "just werks" is great for that. Might move on eventually. Might not.

GNU/LINUX IS GARBAGE

I use Ubuntu MATE on my desktop/laptop and CentOS on my server.

I find it pretty hilarious when my classmates in college who use Windows or OSX struggle to install an IDE or RDBMS when all I have to do is pull a few packages from the repositories.

i would usually answer arch but im between distros. i was trying manjaro but pacman was fucked when i tried installing gnome and fedora fucked up the install and wont let me boot. im mist likely going to try slackware or mageia next

Ubuntu MATE. The reason is that I started with elementaryOS and I wanted something that I could make to look similar, with more options for customisation. Also I liked the top menus a lot.

Is Ubuntu the best choice if I rely on modern hardware a lot? From Intel, nVidia, Broadcom etc.

Is there any reason to use Debian over some *buntu flavor on your Desktop?

Right now I have Mint on my laptop and Windows 10 on my desktop, and I was feeling like finally converting my desktop to GNU/Linux

Ubuntu MATE because it's fast and light, loads of software in repository, major companies provide Ubuntu debs on their page, traditional desktop environment and not iPad touchscreen interface mental retardation, incorporates non-free software that makes life livable, and things just work like you would expect from a feasible desktop solution.

What are some real differences over Ubuntu versions? People keep saying to me it's the one that supports modern hardware the best but there are SO MANY
>>
>>53644240
no, the best choice on new hardware are things like fedora rawhide, debian unstable, arch, gentoo or maybe opensuse tumbleweed. just make sure your distro has a very recent kernel.
>>
>>53644359
I read about at least Deb. Unstable and Arch and they're more for power-users, I'm fucking stupid
>>
>>53644350
the thing before *buntu just says which DE is used and is not important. .04 releases are usually long term support versions that are useful for new users and servers while .10 versions are for everyone else. you should just pick whichever is newest.
>>53644372
you could also compile your own kernel on any distro. but if you have bleeding edge hardware you probably need bleeding edge drivers (which are either in the kernel or in kernel modules). what hardware do you have?

Arch with Awesome WM.

I like it because it doesn't try to be an alternative to Windows, like Ubuntu and Debian, it's just made to be efficient, simple and light. You can hate me for saying it, but I like systemd. It makes using Arch much more simple.

I like Arch devs. They have the balls to tell the community to go fuck itself. They make good decisions and keep it fresh.

While Arch is simple, it's not noob friendly. So the problem users tend to stick with Ubuntu or Mint, and the problems don't carry over to Arch, there are few morons in the userbase.

Arch is the one I can trust. I can trust there's no bloatware, no malware and last but not least, no SJW cuck devs.
>>
>>53644434
the skylake stuff and your 980ti should be fine from linux 4.3+ onwards but your samsung nvme ssd could cause problems. use a search engine to find out if it works. maybe there is something on the arch wiki about it.
if it's supported i think you would be fine with *buntu 16.04, i suggest GNOME.
>>
Gentoo because mainterns never package what I need and it's nice to have a browser that supports thumbnails in the filepicker...

>>
>>53637726

>>
>>53644839
This
i3 is the best for multitasking with like 10 different things without all the clutter of a Windows-esque desktop.
>>
>>53644863

Wasn't their page hacked so it pointed to corrupted isos a short while back?
That's pretty hardcore botnet stuff...
>>
>>53644945
That was fixed within a day, and the only people affected are the ones who did download the corrupted ISO files. It's safe now
>>
>>53644972
This. The "Mint is a botnet" is a stupid meme that needs to die.

How many people on here run unofficial pirated Windows copies? You have no idea who made, whether they edited or not and whether there are any backdoors put in it by the uploader like what happened with the Mint debacle.

It happened to Mint and they fixed it within a day. Someone does it to your pirated Windows and you never find out because Windows users don't have the knowledge/skills to discover that they've been compromised.

Ubuntu 14.04 on vps but thinking about switching to Debian, now that everything is running smoothly. I somehow dont like it when i cant work on something on there...
Also Debian on Laptop, and Mint on that netbook i set up as a wifi-router with my surfstick. Couldnt find a way to tell debian that there is no CD-Drive during installation.
Also Win 10 for vidya

of course it is. It's not like they don't have official packages.

It's much easier with Arch because the setup is not automated. Having to fight an installer to do what you want is a giant pain in the ass
