how did /g/ root their Androids?
I don't want to just google "how 2 root android" and run some shitty program, and end up with a brick
so i'm asking here. how did you goy....guysroot your androids?
what are the benefits?
are there any downsides?

usually I look for a "one click root" on XDA.
I have a 6P now so I just unlocked the bootloader, installed TWRP recovery image, then install SuperSU from there. That is not always an option though

Two options.
First install a boot loader
I'd recommended twrp.
Then:
>flash supersu
Or
>install custom ROM with root
I personally like CyanogenMod.
There, you can find more guides on xda or similar sites, make sure whatever you use is compatible with your phone and carrier model. A sprint s5 is different from a Verizon s5.

My Galaxy s5 has to be downgraded to 4.4 to be rooted, which is more of a hassle than it's worth imo, since the 6.0 is rolling out soon.
