Costs a lot of money, is difficult to make, looks impressive, spins around, does not actually improve accuracy at all for a wrist watch but maybe does for a pocketwatch.

Also Seiko recently released their first tourbillon ever, it's ass ugly.

They are supposed to rotate the time-keeping components so that if left in one position the effects of gravity pulling on the watch are canceled out. The actual effects are lackluster though.

It's not that they don't work so much that gravity doesn't really affect accuracy that much, and there are better, more simple ways to improve accuracy.

cocktail time sucks, it's too big and flashy and has a mineral crystal when they should've just made it acrylic. I can only imagine it being worn by a big flamboyant gay man with a bright colored pocket square and a goofy tie and patterned socks.

The SARX is very nice, I'm a big fan of the sharp edges and I think it looks very nice in person, the angled faces are always catching the light nicely and the dial looks great. I will say that I'm very anal about smudges and stuff on my watches so it annoys me a bit that the SARX bracelet has some of the faces polished and they get covered in fingerprint smudges all the time so I'm always wiping it, that's pretty minor though. It's a bit on the bigger side which makes it very casual for me, I think it gets noticed a lot more than the plain unassuming SARB does. The SARB looks like nothing remarkable from far away so it's very safe and I doubt anybody would look twice at it. They're both nice watches though.

The spinning around is supposed to cancel out the effect of gravity pulling on the escapement, but in a wristwatch the watch is already always spinning around because it's strapped to your arm so it really doesn't accomplish anything. A pocketwatch at least is always sitting in your pocket in the same orientation so spinning the tourbillon around can actually make a small difference.

>>53634224
The SRP77x line is out now and that is the replacement for the SKX line. Various sites also claim that it is discontinued (http://www.hodinkee.com/articles/the-seiko-skx007-divers-watch) and supposedly official Seiko retailers have said that they were told it is no longer in production. I guess you could email someone at Seiko and ask if you want to make sure, but discontinuing a watch model is probably not going to be something that they would officially announce anywhere so I'm not sure you can find any completely solid proof.

Where can I find a replacement strap/straps for a seiko 5? I read the strap guide, went to ebay and searched "seiko 5 nato strap" and basically nothing comes up. Am I searching for the wrong thing here? Or will any strap (of a certain size? what size?) fit a seiko 5?

Quite a bit to cover actually, since you're missing a lot of models here. And don't forget LM and Seiko 5 models are not quartz.

But as far as quartz is concerned,KS and GS would be the top of the line. Then you would have the Type II,Lord quartz and 7548 quartz divers. (Missed a couple, but those marked with the quartz penis are usually fit the bill)

Seiko quartz and SQ are more or less bottom barrel.

I had this Type II pass by here, pretty nice quality for a quartz watch.

But the difference between a KQ and GQ, in comparison to something like a SQ can be shown in the finishing of the case, dial, hands and bracelet quality.

Though the bracelet the came with the type II in the picture was meh at best. But the small price difference is worth the extra shekels. And sometimes you can find Type II's that have interesting looking dials like this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Seiko-Quartz-Type-II-Silver-linen-dial-7123-8010-orig-SS-Band-Kanji-Datum-TOP-/291708901475?hash=item43eb349863:g:gbgAAOSwv9hW2S5z

Which SARX?
One of the sportier ones with a thick strap might be ok, but I don't remember their lugs as short at all. Think only SARB17 (and quartz / handwind GS) are 16cm friendly lug-to-lug. Think most SARXs are 50mm+ l2l.

Nah, it's a cheaper one from a seller who's based in Cyprus. Quality wise its probably similar to the one that's sold by cheapestnato.

There's an Italian seller on eBay, called watchesnatostraps, and if you buy 3 or more perlons it's worthwhile to get them from him (Quality is definitely better)

>>53640887
48mm (or rather 47) is my personal limit for my 6.3" / 16cm wrist. I remember looking into SARB / SARX and all the SARX being larger than that. Also remember it as SARB17 having 48mm lug to lug and everything else larger / longer.

The other anon covered the quartz reasonably well. For the vintage mechanicals, the 52xx based Seikos from the 1970s such as the LM Special (NOT the regular LM) and the King Seiko 5245/5246/5256 (NOT 56xx) are outstanding values with a movement so good that Seiko put it back into production in the 1990s as the 4s15.

Both my serviced LM Special and 5256 King Seiko run under +1s/d.

Pic related.

Ask him if he has an idea why a day display on a 52XX cal Seiko doesn't switch properly. (Quickset works, date works)

Dunno. I remember reading something about it some time ago, but can't remember well.

Some people do the straps backwards on dress watches. When you do it backwards the extra length of strap sticks out towards you instead of away from you so it's supposed to look neater.

Vintage Seikos are seriously underpriced locally in Japan than their value globally. Some models really worth looking into with access to Tokyo pawn and used goods shops:

Grand Seiko 4520/4522
King Seiko 4500/4502
King Seiko 5256

The hard part is identifying a decent condition one without you being there in person though.

Not who you're qouting, but look at the.. everything there.
Dial is a whole lot cripser and richer. The subdials are recessed and actually relevant to the chronograph. Case is a lot nicer finished, hands better made, crystal is domed, strap is noticably higher quality and actual leather.
What you have is a chinese non-chronograph movement with added calendar function.

Okay m8, I'll make sure to spend as much time as possible lurking on an anime appreciation message board so I know what some random neckbeard means when he spouts bollocks.

Or I could have a life.

If you don't want to abide by the rules you need to fuck off, you're not forced to stay here.

I don't understand. Why would you burgers want to buy the version for the domestic market when you have the skx173?

Also since I keep seeing a bunch of anons who happen to all live in the same city recommending watchmakers to each other I guess it's worth asking, has anybody has been to a good watchmaker in Houston? I thought about just taking it to an Omega AD for the full like-new refinishing and stuff but they want like 700 goddamn dollars for that and I would probably regret letting them replace parts and stuff.

Why would they need to replace things if it's alright? How much is that worth? Is it worth more than 700?

When you send it to Omega rather than to an independent watchmaker they don't give a damn about collector value or keeping original parts or anything, they refinish and repolish and replace parts as necessary to get your watch looking factory new. Also for parts like crowns and stuff they have been known to replace with parts that are obviously real original Omega parts but which are not correct for that specific watch. They also charge a lot of money and take a long time. It seems like they do a very good job, though.

Also that watch has tritium lume which is dead, and I think a big thing for them is repainting the dial with modern lume and they're kind of adamant about it because of legal bullshit about radioactive substances.

For instance this article: https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/the-service-industry-taking-an-omega-speedmaster-professional-for-an-omega-authorized-service
They did a good job and kept the original lume but he had to fight them a bit to do so.

Why would anyone ever want to send them their vintage knowing that?

Which is silly as hell for tritium since it just turns into harmless helium
