Welcome to /flt/, we are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

We don't describe free software as an “alternative” to proprietary, because that word presumes all the “alternatives” are legitimate and each additional one makes users better off. In effect, it assumes that free software ought to coexist with software that does not respect users' freedom.

We believe that distribution as free software is the only ethical way to make software available for others to use. The other methods, nonfree software and Service as a Software Substitute subjugate their users. We do not think it is good to offer users those “alternatives” to free software.

What the fuck? I'm sure there's some way to do it from console but this has been awful so far. GNOME feels like fucking garbage compared to any other DE I've used so far, KDE may be bloated but at least customization is easy. I think Solus does sound neat but this experience has turned me off of any DE that's meant to emulate or be similar to GNOME..

So many people tell me that WINE runs some games quite nicely. The issue comes with using a PS3 gamepad.

Sure, it's recognized well for native games and such, but the layout is completely fucked when using WINE even on games that do not require an xbox 360 controller. Is there any quick solution to this?

Well, basically:

On linux: Recognizes it without issues, works well with native games, games on WINE detect the controller like it's drunk (d-pad doesn't work, every face button acts as a direction button, some buttons register as pressing 2 buttons at the same time).

On windows there's no WINE to use but you must install extra software to make it work (SCP drivers). However those are no big deal, and the ps3 controller detected (optionally) as a 360 gamepad so any games a decade old or less work fine right out of the box.

Issue is the operating system though.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

It's personal preference. I personally prefer i3 with no DE. I don't see the point in installing all of the programs that are bundled with a DE that I will never use. If I had to pick a DE though it'd probably be cinnamon or xfce.

Tried checking the controller config from control panel through wine, it detected it as a gamepad with about 30 buttons, which was nuts

Some games I tried don't have the option to change controller settings sadly, other than inverting camera controls and such. I couldn't get x360ce to work which I could use for that purpose as well.

Using them in VMs will not serve you well because your Thinkpad hardware is obviously different. You have to try each one of them in your Thinkpad to see which one works best in it.
>>
>>53630755
Oldfag here (when it comes to distro hopping), let me tell you: At the end, you'll realize that the only interesting things are package managers and what's in the repos. You could use 1000 different distros, but still miss that they all are basically the same thing, using different, preinstalled software like DEs.

I suggest to decide between plain distros like Debian, Arch (or the free Parabola), etc, since you can install on them everything you want. You want Arch with KDE? Just install it, you want Ubuntu with a tiling WM? Just install Debian, the base of Ubuntu and the desired WM.

tl;dr every distro is the same GNU/Linux core, only the preinstalled and available packages differ - get the bases, ditch the derviants.

Nothing, but that's not the point. Arch has the two usual problems: there's no clear policy about what software can be included, and nonfree blobs are shipped with their kernel, Linux. Arch also has no policy about not distributing nonfree software through their normal channels.
>>
>>53631039
I dont think you quite understand what you are staying. The arch kernel is montolithic by default.
Parabola cant limit it so far that it cuts out support. It may have less modules, but to support a wide variety,it is still going to include legacy support and have a monolithic-equse setup.

Either way compile your own kernel like any sain person

Archs policy is to stay close to upstream.

>>
>>53631150
I dont think you quite understand what you are staying. Adding a different kernel is the users choice. That fact does still not make Arch a complete free distro, because by adding libre kernel, you have modified it. At this point, only your very own Arch install is free, which is redundant.

Because HP.

It's a microserver so the SSD is connected to the ODD sata port which doesn't let you boot from it if there are derives attached to sata 0-3 while in AHCI mode.

Trick is to install windows/Linux normally to SSD, write bootloader to SD card and point it to the OS on the SSD.

Either way I think it would be okay to run it off an SD card. It's just for plex, FTP, smb and a few other things, I don't see it causing a lot of reads/writes after its all setup and booted.

>>
>>53632173
yea, that kind of setup won't demand much from the root filesystem, provided at least plex's data is on the ssd (if plex server is anything like emby, it will want to cache things like show/movie graphics, which will be served much slower from an sd card)
% du -sh /var/lib/emby/
1.7G /var/lib/emby/

that said, these things can selectively be moved to the ssd, without having to put the whole root on the ssd

Linux is the name of the kernel that Linus Torvalds developed starting in 1991. The operating system in which Linux is used is basically GNU with Linux added. To call the whole system “Linux” is both unfair and confusing. Please call the complete system GNU/Linux, both to give the GNU Project credit and to distinguish the whole system from the kernel alone.

Hello, /flt/. I want to switch to GNU/Linux, but I care about >muh vidya. Should I just stick to Windows 7? Also, are finding and installing drivers a pain in the ass on GNU/Linux? Lastly, what distribution should I use? Based on this chart, I've narrowed it down to the following:
>Ubuntu
>Elementary OS
>Mint
Please and thank you for helping.
>>
>>53632738
dual-boot and only use wangblows for vidya. installing drivers and other software is really easy if your device is supported (most stuff is).
just try xubuntu or ubuntu gnome some time and do stuff with it.
>>
>>53632738
>>muh vidya
Get Ubuntu, best support for nonfree drivers.
Set up a VM with passthrough, so you can use your hardware and you woun't feel any difference. Most games also run on WINE with actually better experience and more FPS than on Wangblows.
>>
>>53632719

I always forget that people with no prior experience won't know about this basic functionality until they stumble upon it. This was a good reminder of that.
>>

>dual-boot
There's no reason to install GNU/Linux when people are going to infect their computer with Windows at the same time.
>>
>>53632728
I know it's a fact, but it's also a commonly known joke.

>>53632738
Do you use Steam for a lot of your vidya? If so, I recommend you do this:

>Install VirtualBox
>Install some flavor of Ubuntu (GNOME is my favorite) or Mint
>Install Steam in said distro
>Log in to your account
>Check which games will be available to you out of the box (because there are many already)
>If you are willing to make do with this selection, and feel comfortable trying out Linux, then by all means switch completely. Drivers shouldn't be much of an issue on flavors/derivatives of Ubuntu (Mint is a derivative of Ubuntu).
>If you see a lot of games that are still not available for Linux in your library, then you might want to consider dual booting. Use your Win7 exclusively for vidya, use Linux for everything else

>>53632835
Ofc you're right here, but there are better ways, like learning in a VM or using a second computer or drive for Windows or GNU/Linux.

So, looking at the OS picker flowchart on the "Babby's first linux" page, I notice there are some really specialized distros for things like gaming and media creation.

Is there any benefit to using one of those specific distros over just installing a broader one and downloading the specific programs? (Aside from not needing to download those programs.) I'm asking just for the sake of curiosity - not about to download one myself.

Alright, I know I'm a complete idiot for not being able to do this correctly, but I'm having trouble doing a live USB of OpenSUSE on Mac OS X

I'm on a Macbook Pro, '15, and I've downloaded the openSUSE iso. I'm trying to format the SD card (I tried using a USB but it doesn't work either), and after waiting for a while after doing the "sudo dd if=/pathtoiso.iso of=/dev/rdisk1 bs=4k" command on terminal, I get an error with the prompt saying "The disk you inserted was not readable"

So is it because the openSUSE not a dmg file? I've converted the iso to dmg and am currently running the above command on terminal (I'll update if anything else happens), but I'd like to know if it's something else... Thanks in advance!

Antergos anon here,

>having issues with ethernet connection being recognised.

So, after a bit of research, I've discovered my connectivity problem is almost definitely an issue with Realtek drivers.

from lspci -v, I've learned the kernal driver and modules in use is/are 'r8169'. Gooble suggests it should be 'r8168'.

dmesg | grep r8168 reveals nothing - but r8169 returns the following.

r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver 2.3LK-NAPI loaded
r8169 0000:02:00.0 eth0: RTL8168b/8111b at 0xffffc900003be000, 00:21:97:9c:5a:68, XID 1800000000 IRQ 26
r8169 0000:02:00.0 eth0: jumbo features [frames: 4080 bytes, tx checksumming: ko]
r8169 0000:02:00.0 ens33: renamed from eth0
r8169 0000:02:00.0 ens33: link down
r8169 0000:02:00.0 ens33: link down

So, I've downloaded the most recent drivers from the Realtek website, put the tar on the system via usb, and I am having trouble 'installing' the driver and ensuring the other is blacklisted.

Is what I'm describing the correct course of action, and could somebody please explain to me where I go from here?

However, when executing
uname -a

on the terminal, it tells me my kernel is version 3.16.0-38. So what gives? Why is the update manager offering the "Dangerous" (Level 5) update to 3.13?

I'm sorry if this is kind of a dumb question. I'm a novice user

a spelling mistake maybe? check the actual file location and your .profile

Does anyone know of anything like this that also shows large individual files? I'm having a devil of a time deciding what to delete and such a tool would come in handy.

Hey it worked! I just generated a new fstab and grub.cfg and it appears to work fine.Looking at my /home .cfg files and nothing appears to be out of order yet. Woo glad I didn't have to reinstall arch again.
