Which methods does /g/ employ in order to find out whether a piece of software you've never heard of before is trustworthy or not? I suppose googling for references is the obvious one but who do you trust?

Well figures. But I was hoping for more details. Not having a website that seems was hastily made in a day is a good pointer.
It's not like we decide to download something or not just by common sense.
see what other people are saying about it, not on any site controlled by the people who made the software, and not on places full of retards like youtube/reddit/4chan
preferably more specialized forums, it really depends on the software
ideally you shouldn't have to trust the software, you could run them in ways that can't cause problems even if they turn out to be dodgy
