NVidia had a similar issue with drivers recently too.
DX12/Vulkan seems to work fine for NVidia as well, but green team seems to be having issues getting async working (could be hardware tied, expect next gen NVidia cards to run it fine)

AMD drivers are now arguably better than Nvidia's at least for Windows.
GCN keeps catching up to and passing Kepler/Maxwell cards, but they do run hotter.

All this said, it's probably retarded to buy anything right now given that Polaris and Pascal will be out in like 3 months with over twice the performance per Watt.

If you're on a budget and don't mind buying a "last gen" card though, a 390 will probably age a lot better for future games than a 970, which will soon get the Nvidia driver neglect treatment.

I had an HD 7790 back around 2013. It was running okay for the first six months and then it started to crash every time I opened a game. I'm pretty sure it was the shitty drivers, because it's been happening with every ATI/AMD card I've ever owned.

I didn't feel like dicking around with driver reinstallations and safe mode checks FOR THE 15th time, so I just switched over to a GTX 750 Ti. Not a single crash ever since. I upgraded to a GTX 970 a little while after, still no problems.

what cpu do you have? amd's dx11 drivers have really terrible cpu overhead so unless you're sporting a high end i5/i7 it would make sense for the nvidia card to perform more smoothly.
