Physicsfag here,
Why is python and fortran so popular in physics? Every professor in the department swears by them, and they laugh out loud when someone mentions we taught Java in our CS classes they make us take

Python for code simplicity (they are not programmers).
Fortran for performance (very low level).
>>53616820
It's much quicker to write and test code in python, and there are many numerical libraries for it.

>they are not programmers
this is the entire reason

>physicsfag
>doesn't know why it's popular in his field
you're a baby freshman that's why you have no fucking clue
they laugh in your face because switching languages is trivial
python is popular because it's easy to quickly analyse some data and create a decent looking plot in matplotlib (as a free alternative to MATLAB)
Python is kinda like BASIC. Non software dev types love it. Just grin and take it like a man.

This.
Also cause the professor's programs were written a loooong time ago, when fortran was popular. They reuse those functions over and over and did a little new piece of code from time to time, building a huge library of things they need and only they can understand.
