I use Ubuntu Mate all the time. Personally it's my favorite flavour of Ubuntu. Recommend it all the time when trying to switch cheapos over from Windows.
>>
>>53616474
Mate is literally the only good DE still available. Trinity is almost an option, but it's way too buggy and will never support wayland. Lumina is far too underdeveloped and will never have good generic programs because it's against their goals - yet good programs are the prime reason to choose a DE over another. KDE is systemdickware nowadays and every new series is unusable for years, ending up less featureful than the last version by the end of its life. Gnome, cinnamon and unity use fuckloads of resources, control like crap, look like crap, are extremely hard to customize, and have lackluster programs. Maui has almost no development and is currently too buggy to use. It also aims to use systemd heavily though it can be used independent from it for now. XFCE is a sad joke and LXDE/Qt sacrifices a lot of convenience and programs for the low resource footprint it gains, when not using very small devices.
>>
>>53622446
Use a launcher such as kupfer instead of the menu. It was great when it came out but it's silly nowadays. Aside from that, atril is the second best pdf viewer (behind okular), caja is the second best file manager (behind dolphin), eyeofmate is the best image viewer, the screenshot tool is the second best (behind ksnapshot), and it has all the customization tools you need (settings center which centralizes settings menus, a good screen management utility (frontend to randr), a good set of setting menus for appearances and behaviors of the desktop - and good amount of easy customization, device (printer, keyboard, etc.) management, etc.) The two main issues with mate are that 1. there are several bugs (though easily bypassed, and most have little impact overall; an example is that you have to change the default background, otherwise the text on desktop icons will be garbled at each reboot), and 2. dconfeditor, a.k.a. windows registry: mate edition.

Why are you using that bloated piece of spyware shit? Go back to Windows 10

What are some key differences between ubuntu and ubuntu mate? I was tinkering around with just ubuntu on a little shit box pc while waiting on some replacement parts for my main rig. Thoughts on my short experience.

>nice, clean, very attractive.
>customization felt limited or perhaps walled off behind more advanced usage.
> very lightweight, but actually seemed to run a little sluggish.
> need to put some more time into learning what alternatives there are to windows apps.
>didn't fuck with wine yet

Overall I felt pretty positive about it, but still think there might be a better distro for me. Oh, and while security is nice, needing to constantly enter my password was fucking annoying. (yes I know you can turn it off, but i haven't spent that much time with it.)
