Welcome to /flt/, we are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.
There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:
0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux
Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.
Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

If there's a free driver, ofc the free one, but if not, you need to use the propietary.

>>53615390
Thank you, man.
Another question, is ubuntu mate good for start?
>>53615394
You should stick to one. Which one is your choice. The problem is that apt and aptitude keep track of the installed packages differently. Means: When you remove a package via apt, aptitude still thinks it's installed. This can lead to problems.
I personally prefer apt, since it's lightweight compared to aptitude.
>>53615404
Thank you too.
>>53615439
Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu GNOME, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, and Xubuntu are all the exact same operating system. The only difference is the desktop environment (how it looks)
And how it looks out of those is your personal preference. Use the one you like the best.
>different .isos for different DE's
Why is this a thing?
>>53615505
Because not everything is a netinstall
>>53615505
Because when you install a DE manually, you get the plain DE, without the distro's patches, additions, themes, etc.
>>53615472
Why are these all different things if there's just a slight difference in configuration, isn't it better to have a blank system which lets you choose your desktop config through the GUI installer?
Is it better to run older kernel for old hardware? For compatibility issues of course
>>53615553
not necessarily if you compile it bloat-free.
>>53615558
Yeah I understand, but from a user point of it's the difference of having to choose between distro A-A to A-F, or choosing which desktop env you want during install time. It's just a matter of installing packages right?
>>53615625
point of view**
>>53615537
Not necessarily true. Take Ubuntu for example: there's the cinnamon package ("innovative and comfortable desktop") as well as the cinnamon-desktop-environment meta package ("Cinnamon desktop environment - full desktop with extra components").
>>53615515
That makes sense I guess. I was just looking at Korora and it had 5 different versions depending on which DE you you wanted, it just seemed completely unnecessary.
Help me choose. Debian stable, testing or unstable.
In terms of security , how does testing hold up compared to stable?
I'm fairly(well, a bit) used to Arch, so I'm not sure how I would deal with the really old software.
I'm moving to Debian from Mint.
Do I have to use "sudo" or some equivalent to install things with aptitude as root here?
I'm just afraid I'm about to overstep my boundaries and liable to break things if I install shit as root.
Tried to install guake withaptitude install guake
and I getE: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?
>>53615712
if you are used to arch already just use unstable.
>>53615712
If you like the bleeding edge aspect of Arch, go unstable. Follow the proper way of installing it though.
If you weren't such a huge fan of it, then go testing
If you want to kick back and relax a bit, stay with stable.
>>53615748
if you don't specify a root password during install you will have sudo preconfigured. this way you need to install and configure sudo manually.
https://wiki.debian.org/sudo
>>53615757
I'm not sure if I want something more unstable though yet. I plan to get it for my laptop, mostly as a "Facebook machine".
>>53615772
Hm. I might do that.
Anyway to sort of "categorize" the differences between testing and unstable? As I understand it, unstable might break more often, but is fixed faster, while unstable, if it does break, may remain broken for a good long while.
>decide to install arch on laptop
>too lazy to go through whole thing again so decide to use AUI
>can't download from github because network doesn't work
>setting wlan interface up doesn't do shit
>it doesn't even detect my usb wireless adapter I usually do and which worked on every installation beforehand

>>53615833
you understand right but said unstable when meaning testing. another difference it that testing is also nextstable, so you can use stretch and wait for it to be the current release and then have stable.
sometimes packages are held back from testing in a bulk because of dependencies. this is the case for krita for example.

>>53615987
Might be a bit fun to "tinker" with.
What I meant was, I won't use it for any sort of serious work, and anything I do in it won't really matter all that much if it breaks.
Hi guys. I'm getting a new laptop soon, and I figured this would be a good opportunity to start fresh and try Linux for the first time. I haven't really done any research on distros yet. I did ask my friend about it, however, and he said "If you want Windows, get Ubuntu. If you want to learn actual Linux, get Arch". Are either of those good for beginners?
So I have a Raspberry Pi as my DNS server. It runs Pi-Hole to block ads. How can I chance the server name? I tried setting hostname but that doesn't seem to do anything.
The name it gives seems to be the first entry in /etc/pihole/gravity.list
>>53616346
I wouldn't jump straight into Arch, it's pretty overwhelming. Ubuntu or it's forks are a good place to start.
Or, if you want a sort of "introduction" to Arch, you can try Antergos, it's basically the Ubuntu of Arch, and while it gets a lot of flak here, it did help me personally get a crash course on the system from a more "safe" less overwhelming environment. It's essentially Arch with an installer and a lot of pre-configured software.
Yes, why not.
>>53615748
Yes these are system packages, you need to be root to install
>>53616346
Your friend is an elitist minimalist piece of shit, don't listen to him. GNU/Linux is GNU/Linux.
He sounds 14.
>>53615625
The Ubuntu "flavors" also have differing design philosophies that carry over into the package selection beyond just the DE. Terminals, Editors, File Managers, Accessories, Multimedia Applications, etc...
All of these could be accomplished by starting with Ubuntu-Minimal and selecting the packages you want from the ground up, of course. But the distro flavors provide a way for this process to be curated for you. Rather than selecting packages from a minimal "universal" installer, the curators of the respective flavors manage this process for you (or at least give you a significant shortcut).
>>53616392
The server name in what context? Also check /etc/hostname
>>53616346

>>53617663
When I switched to Arch, I used Architect which made installation very easy. After that it's smooth sailing. Everything is neatly packaged somewhere and Archwiki is probably the most professionally written piece of documentation I've ever seen. Knowing a few important config files like fstab helps, but even those are covered in the wiki if you don't know them.
Using Arch with Yaourt.
Is there a way I can set it to never update a specific package? It's an AUR package so it needs to be Yaourt-specific, I think.

Hello, I am using awesomeWM and I was wondering if there was a way to make cairo-dock work with it. I'm using one of the themes from awesome-copycats.
>>53617913
Yaourt shares syntax with pacman, does it not? There's probably a way to exclude packages from updates in one of the config files. Or otherwise if there's an exclude option in the pacman/yaourt command, you could do the kludgy thing and alias it.
Haven't used Arch since 2009, so can't be more specific. I assume the wiki has an article detailing this in it.
Recent convert from Win7 here. Are there any real alternatives to the music players listed in the wiki on GNU/Linux? I'm looking for something with the customization of foobar2000 or MusicBee, or at least something that doesn't look like garbage. Clementine is probably the closest thing I've found thus far, but it looks pretty bad and is real limited. cmus is alright but I'd personally rather have something separate from the terminal, and I'd likewise not prefer to use a daemon. Hey guys
I'm going to install Lubuntu on my sister's laptop. It currently has Windows 7. I went and backed up her data with the in-built option, and it gave me this file. Inside there are two folders, one with a catalog and the other full of .rar's
In order to just get the original file structures, should I just extract all the rar's, or are there any tools in Linux specifically to recover files from Windows backups?
Or should I just delete it and back up her data by dragging folders to the external HDD, or some other elegant way?
>>53618414
Unless it's a disgustingly huge amount of data, I'd opt for the drag-and-drop method (or maybe compress it yourself). The Windows backup format is likely to contain application settings and other bullshit that won't matter in a Linux environment.
Unless you wanted to go back later, that is.

>>53618414
>>53618473
Sorry, I must correct - pic related shows the two folders I was talking about. The hundreds of .rar's are in the first folder.
So will it work if I just unzip everything into some other folder, or is there some nuance I'm missing in how Win7 backs up data?
Hopefully this'll be the same as drag-dropping, just cleaning up some unnecessary files later like you said
>>53617663
Don't let /g/ convince you otherwise, it is a distro which demands moderate knowledge and some system familiarity with Linux. The most important thing to do before attempting to install Arch is know what you like and write it down (a text file works). I mean, know everything that you like: windows manager, text editor, music player, file manager, background applet, wifi-applet, etc. The install can be somewhat simplified by installing a popular IDE like Gnome, but if you're setting up Arch without a script, that is unlikely the case.
In short, all I can say is that it takes a fair bit of a time investment, and the benefits are nice but not as much as they're hyped to be. I currently run Arch and Ubuntu, and both work great. Arch asks of you to know how to make a program from source code, and if you know that, there is very little in selling points for arch other than the learning experience or you're proficient enough with linux that installing is easy
Is there a way with pacman to make it think something installed without it actually being installed? I know you can with portage.
How much lighter is Lubuntu compared to, say, Windows XP or Windows 7?
How about Xubuntu?

Sure, as long as you know you'll have to do a bit of reading to start off your journey. If you want to plug and play try Ubuntu first.
