You should stick to one. Which one is your choice. The problem is that apt and aptitude keep track of the installed packages differently. Means: When you remove a package via apt, aptitude still thinks it's installed. This can lead to problems.
I personally prefer apt, since it's lightweight compared to aptitude.

Hi guys. I'm getting a new laptop soon, and I figured this would be a good opportunity to start fresh and try Linux for the first time. I haven't really done any research on distros yet. I did ask my friend about it, however, and he said "If you want Windows, get Ubuntu. If you want to learn actual Linux, get Arch". Are either of those good for beginners?
So I have a Raspberry Pi as my DNS server. It runs Pi-Hole to block ads. How can I chance the server name? I tried setting hostname but that doesn't seem to do anything.

I wouldn't jump straight into Arch, it's pretty overwhelming. Ubuntu or it's forks are a good place to start.
Or, if you want a sort of "introduction" to Arch, you can try Antergos, it's basically the Ubuntu of Arch, and while it gets a lot of flak here, it did help me personally get a crash course on the system from a more "safe" less overwhelming environment. It's essentially Arch with an installer and a lot of pre-configured software.

The Ubuntu "flavors" also have differing design philosophies that carry over into the package selection beyond just the DE. Terminals, Editors, File Managers, Accessories, Multimedia Applications, etc...
All of these could be accomplished by starting with Ubuntu-Minimal and selecting the packages you want from the ground up, of course. But the distro flavors provide a way for this process to be curated for you. Rather than selecting packages from a minimal "universal" installer, the curators of the respective flavors manage this process for you (or at least give you a significant shortcut).

When I switched to Arch, I used Architect which made installation very easy. After that it's smooth sailing. Everything is neatly packaged somewhere and Archwiki is probably the most professionally written piece of documentation I've ever seen. Knowing a few important config files like fstab helps, but even those are covered in the wiki if you don't know them.

Yaourt shares syntax with pacman, does it not? There's probably a way to exclude packages from updates in one of the config files. Or otherwise if there's an exclude option in the pacman/yaourt command, you could do the kludgy thing and alias it.

I'm going to install Lubuntu on my sister's laptop. It currently has Windows 7. I went and backed up her data with the in-built option, and it gave me this file. Inside there are two folders, one with a catalog and the other full of .rar's
In order to just get the original file structures, should I just extract all the rar's, or are there any tools in Linux specifically to recover files from Windows backups?
Or should I just delete it and back up her data by dragging folders to the external HDD, or some other elegant way?

Unless it's a disgustingly huge amount of data, I'd opt for the drag-and-drop method (or maybe compress it yourself). The Windows backup format is likely to contain application settings and other bullshit that won't matter in a Linux environment.

Don't let /g/ convince you otherwise, it is a distro which demands moderate knowledge and some system familiarity with Linux. The most important thing to do before attempting to install Arch is know what you like and write it down (a text file works). I mean, know everything that you like: windows manager, text editor, music player, file manager, background applet, wifi-applet, etc. The install can be somewhat simplified by installing a popular IDE like Gnome, but if you're setting up Arch without a script, that is unlikely the case.
In short, all I can say is that it takes a fair bit of a time investment, and the benefits are nice but not as much as they're hyped to be. I currently run Arch and Ubuntu, and both work great. Arch asks of you to know how to make a program from source code, and if you know that, there is very little in selling points for arch other than the learning experience or you're proficient enough with linux that installing is easy

Okay I want to install Kubuntu and my install is rather clean. Like It's seamless but for some reason my 4k monitor won't show the dualboot screen. It stays black until the system loading screen is present so if you dualboot it won't show shit. Now how can I bypass this? My monitor is an Acer XB280HK. Is this a monitor issue or a linux issue since most distros don't have 4k support yet? Note that when I boot up my pc, after the splashscreen 'Acer', it's black until the windows loading ball comes up. That might be useful.
