XPS 15. I will admit it's pretty pricey, but if you can get one second hand (I picked up a faulty one) it's a god-tier laptop. One of the few laptops I've seen that performs well and doesn't look like shit (see OP)
>>
these things look so tacky in photos but in person theyre a lot less vibrant. that keyboard is a real treat to type on, short of a t420 but still fine. it's a nice computer especially if you don't mind Lenovo spyware

happy with my i7559 though. if you're not a manlet fag who cares about anesthetics then you get 256gb ssd, skylake quad i5, 960m and 74whr battery for $700. it's literally the xps 15 but ugly and half the price. dell really stepped it up

Out of all the good series some manufacturers make you guys literally picked the worst consumer grade garbage. The cheapass ThinkPad edge is probably the only good value laptop posted here.

The Y50 actually has a good value proposition. I've got one since I need a bit of horsepower for school and it doesn't disappoint. For quite a cheap price you get a top of the line i7 with hyperthreading, a decent gpu and a pretty nice screen. Once I got it I just added an extra 8gigs of ram and an ac wifi card since they cut of a couple of corners to manage to keep its price low. The build quality is ok. Definitely not the best but since it's made of metal on the exterior it's not to bad. Reaching all the components you want to upgrade is easy. And the Linux support is pretty good except for the touchpad. The only real gripe I have is that it only supports 1 2,5 inch disk with no ability to add an extra ssd. So overall it definitely isn't too shabby if you need a goof bang for the buck laptop.
>>
>>53611650

>>53611929
Fat and huge. Also budget looks, no thanks.

>>
>Thin

Not buying on principle

Every thin laptop is a laptop that could last longer if it were thicker to accommodate a larger battery pack, do more if it were thicker to accommodate more ports and hardware in general, and cost less to own if it had a thicker and more repairable/upgradable design. About a half inch is really the minimum thickness for a GOOD laptop given current technology

Corporate fucks say you want and need this thin shit because it saves them the cost of making high quality durable machines you won't want or need to replace 4 years from now. They say it makes it more portable. But the world runs on soft cases, tote bags, purses, and backpacks that can spare more in thickness than they can in any other dimension, and most people who aren't cripples and kids don't notice the weight difference, so that's a straight up lie.

I gave my dad a y50 and the mouse has gone bad on it. I replaced it myself and it turns out the plastic on the inside is complete shit and warps from minimal use.

Also if you think the "sturdiness" is actually a positive factor, you're forgetting about the back side of the laptop where there is plastic screw into metal.

if you want an literally solid laptop even with a gay ass logo, msi's steath pro is fucking solid.
>>
>>53611650
Macbook 12" is the perfect laptop already. The only way to make it even better would be faster CPU (which isn't technically possible beyond Skylake) and cutting the bezels a bit.

I honestly fucking hate this
>>
>>53614209
Why the fuck would you want lesser screen space?
>>
>>53614209

have you tried using a macbook 11"? that bezel is so fucking wide it's distracting from it's terrible resolution and screen.

look at the dell xps 13, that thing looks sexy as hell because there isn't any padding around it that thick.

I like thick women dude, but using an 11" inch macbook air is like fucking a mix between a marshmellow and a pillow, that smells like chinese food
>>
>>53614209
Fitting as much screen real-estate in a small space is not a meme.
The XPS13 proves this. I wish my 13 inch rMPB has less bezel, because I want a bigger screen but I don't want a big chassis.
>>
>>53614255
xps would be a very good laptop if it had a 16:10 display instead of 16:9 with awful bottom bezel. Instead it is just a bit better than the rest of garbage that we have on marked in this day and age

Haven't used it but travel alone is a shitty indicator for keyboard quality.

>Multi-color lightup keyboard is meme-ware for manchildren.
Not like you have to use it.

>Thick ass bezel is unacceptable in 2016
True.
>>
>>53612710
Keep in mind that the yanks add "sales tax" to the sticker price, so what you see is almost never what you pay. It's like they're paying VAT without telling the customer about it up front.
>>
>>53616811
>Haven't used it but travel alone is a shitty indicator for keyboard quality.

Not so much quality as usability. Anything less than 1.4mm feels cheap. Not to mention the letters aren't centered on the key(aesthetically grinds my gears for some reason)

>Not like you have to use it.
True but it's literally one of their main selling points.
>>
>>53616790
You must be rough on your laptops bro. This thing is rock solid.

And I have never had a problem with overheating or throttling. The 4710HQ stays at it's 2.5GHz.

You're the idiot.

That's why I said to remove the red and replace with black and white illumination.
>>
>>53615844
>unacceptable in 2016

It's only a Dual core though. Any powerful GPU would get bottlenecked by it.
>>
I have one of these. The trackpad, keyboard, dispaly, and battery life are awful. The amount of horsepower it has for its size is pretty damn good though.
>>
>>53612355
What the fuck are you talking about? The keyboard is one of the worst I have ever used. Cheap ass dells have better.
>>
>>53617191
Is it the updated one or the older one with the shitty screen?

Also, are you sure you have the dedicated graphics turned off? With the CPU clocked at 800MHz and the GPU off, with full brightness I can get 4 1/2 hours.
>>
>>53613375
Weird, the touchpad feels much better to use in Linux than in Windows to me.
>>
>>53617238
Yes I have turned the GPU off, put it in power saving, etc. I get about 3 hours max if I turn the brightness near minimum and only do very low intensity activities.
>>
Lol @ the cheap shills ITT
>>
>>53617028
Yeah, guess those hundreds of complaints are just bullshit. This is a series infamous for overheating and build quality issues, that's not going to change.

The physics behind it just doesn't work out in favour of these things, you're looking at combined TDPs in excess of 70 watts which is not a good thing in something like a laptop.
>>
>>53617278
Overall the same for me. The only complaint I have about it is that the y axis moves at twice the speed of the x axis on every Linux distro. I manually have to edit a config file for it to work properly. Further I'd say it's indeed better with Linux than Windows. Even if the trackpad isn't all that good.
>>
>no comfy keyboards
>no comfy 4:3 HR screens
>no tablet options
>no big battery life
Why this is happening?
>>
If you're getting a gaming laptop you might as well just build a rig
Most them last about 3-4hrs just web browsing. I was lucky to get 4hrs with my Aorus.

Switched to the X1 Carbon 3rd gen thing is literally godly.
>>
I bought one of those. It was sent back almost immediately after I discovered Lenovo has done everything in their power to make sure upgrading hardware will be the most painful experience on earth. Enjoy prying apart your case and praying you don't snap a fragile plastic latch.

Also the "non-glare display" is, I shit you not, a piece of film glued on a normal screen.
>>
I'm looking to replace my current laptop. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to technology and their specs and what is usually considered good or bad, so I was hoping I could get some recommendations.

I'm mainly looking for something to use for work/class. I would also like something that has a good amount of memory because I tend to download a lot of shows and movies to watch. My budget is currently around $500, but I'm okay with spending more if I decide it's worth it, preferably no more than $700 though.

Any help or suggestions would be great. Thanks.

I have had laptops that have overheated, this is not one of them.

If it is having any heat issues, you are using the GPU without keeping the vents open.

This has been the only laptop that I have had with a GPU that has not had an overheating problem.

Depends on your state law. Some states operate on the basis of "Corporate Nexus" where if the company you are ordering from has physical infrastructure in the state you pay the sales tax. Sales taxes cap out at 9.45% in Tennessee with a national average of 8.5%.
