That's only half of the story.
The other half is that client want stupidily heavy websites (does anybody remember flash sites and their intro screens?).
Also CSS is atrocious for layout. Maybe it's gotten better in the last few years, but I haven't checked.

it's not always possible to prove loops.
>>
>>53592795

>>
>>53592528

I'm ok with this.

A bunch of young insecure female teens will see a young woman they admire (for whatever unhealthy reasons) "code" and eat healthy and will want to imitate her.

If this can lead to a few more girls who will consider taking an exploratory course in CS in college this will have been a victory.

We need to face it, if we want to attract teen girls into thinking that coding is cool, we can't do it by having sweating old man with beards tell them about the beauty of programming, or video games.
>>
>>53592831
Oh shit.

Let me just get on that then
>>
>>53592815
What does that have to do with the halting problem?
You're not writing a program that takes an arbitrary program and says something about its behaviour.
You're proofing the correctness of a specific algorithm.
>>
>>53592884
>We need to face it, if we want to attract teen girls into thinking that coding is cool
Why would anyone want that?
>>
>>53592884

>>53592926

>We need to face it, if we want to attract teen girls into thinking that coding is cool
But why do we want that? How is attracting a specific gender to CS any good? What will women bring to the table that men can't?

Does anyone ever give a shit about attracting women to construction sites? To mining? To any mostly male workfield that pays like shit? No. But when we have a workfield that pays well, awh shit, gotta get women on that.
>>
>>53592926

Isn't that task done by using modulu ? Doesn't sound too hard.

>>
>>53592815
The halting problem says you can't write a program that determines, for all programs and all inputs, if it will halt or not. It doesn't says wether you can do that for a single program and by yourself, not by means of another program (I'm not saying you can, just that the halting problem doesn't apply).

>>53592815
You can prove the correctness of a certain implementation. When we talk about the halting problem and friends, we talk about any possible program supposed to compute a certain function, including programs nobody has written and never will write.

>>
>>53592618
no, that's a commented-out spec.
>>

Not any general code, because halting problem.
Also random RAM bitflips make your code collapse.
Also stupid haskell lazy runtime doesn't guarantee any timing. You can't write a decent realtime system in haskell.

Also: http://www.gwern.net/docs/1996-hoare.pdf

A b s t r a c t . By surveying current software engineering practice, this pa-
per reveals that the techniques employed to achieve reliability are little
different from those which have proved effective in all other branches of
modern engineering: rigorous management of procedures for design in-
spection and review; quality assurance based on a wide range of targeted
tests; continuous evolution by removal of errors from products already in
widespread use; and defensive programming, among other forms of de-
liberate over-engineering. Formal methods and proof play a small direct
role in large scale programming; but they do provide a conceptual frame-
work and basic understanding to promote the best of current practice,
and point directions for future improvement.

This has nothing to do with code or correctness, proving an algorithm is done on paper. Hardware errors on a machine running an implementation of an algorithm are unrelated to the correctness of the algorithm.

Like, how some idiots who actually believe in homepathy pay for it and in some cases even tried to cure one of their familiars from lethal diseases, such as meningitis or cancer, to no effect. Things like that could've been easily prevented if someone wasn't trying to make profit out of their ignorance and instead helped them realize that what they needed is professional medical help. Some people are really easy to fool but that doesn't mean I would try to do it just because it means I can squeeze their money from them, you got to be a special kind of piece of shit to consider doing that, or at least be completely oblivious to the harm that's being done.

I am scared of the possibility that brains are different in such a way that the "neural circuits" of some brains are going to struggle hard with certain tasks, or that brains are essentially the same, but language or early education/input in some way solidify a brain to make it really hard to do certain task

this stuff is just really spooky, and actually taboo as fuck - people seem scared of researching stuff like this, since it gets into certain territories pretty fast.

This is literally what she says. What gives you any ideas of the contrary? Is it offensive that she shows her instagram followers a command line interface next to her tuna salad? Does that somehow imply that she thinks she's some hacker superstar? I'm sure if you send her a private message and tell her how offended you are by her instagram posts she might consider adding a disclaimer that she is not in fact a professional software engineer the next time she posts a picture of her computer.

I mean, dyscalculia exists, but I think a bigger part of the problem is "math-phobia" and also it's taught in the most boring possible way such that only the most interested students can excel

>but language or early education/input in some way solidify a brain to make it really hard to do certain task
Well there is a critical period for learning a (first) language, or at least a theory for it. Maybe the same is valid for basic logic.

You don't really need much more for programming basic things, yet a lot of people still struggle and I find it very odd.

i hated high school math but i still did better in it than most other classes

I can assure you that he is not the typical American college student. At least here in the south this is true.

>It's not good nor bad. Our role is to show them that these options are as valid as other career choices and that it's a place where they could be happy and have fun.

If they're such shallow dipshits that they need a fucking cheer section all their own telling them what a precious little fucking snowflake they are and that they're the little engine that could all the way, it's not our fucking problem. We already have women in tech, the women who have a passion for it already go into the field and succeed without any issues.

Notice how the only cunts who complain about "muh secchsismh" are good-for-nothings who never contributed shit to anything. The rest of them are too busy doing actual work and shooting the shit with their male colleagues.

I don't know who she is or what she does, all I've seen is pictures posted here so that's what I'm basing it on.

Let's pull another parallel, it's much like someone just started playing a guitar and they know half of one chord. Half of Em, for example. And they keep posting on their instagram photos with hashtags such as #girlguitarist

I'd like to choose a job I have a real passion for but unfortunately there are not many openings for a professional masturbator

So basically every guy in high school until abouts early 2000s?
>>

Yeah. Now imagine there's an anonymous communications network where people can talk about the annoying guy and his acoustic guitar at the party, and what they might say

Just look at how the media portrays our job. In EVERY TV show you watch, the "computer genious" is always either an asperger-math-genious-basement dweller or a girl that looks too weird to fit in society.

There is a big stigma and a lot of preconceived ideas about software and computer engineering. Like that it's solitary work with no interactions with customers or colleagues (which experienced devs will tell you is very far from reality)

> picture related : it's how a young teen girl sees software engineering at the age she could begin to develop the interests that would lead her to a CS program and a dev job.

>it's the fault of society that 90% of women are mental midgets who only care about licking coke off a cock until they turn 30 and get an irresistable urge to get a bun in their oven

You think men want to be that fucking creep? No, of course not, but we say "hey, I like this thing, this thing is a huge interest of mine, it would be cool to have it as a job when I grow up, I don't care about the image of it because I'm not a fucking retard".

This is a good thread guys. Love the discussion and exchange in opinions. You don't come by these kinds of threads often in /g/.

You have much deeper issues than what I thought anon.

One of my classmates did a presentation on the benefits of TDD. The articles mostly found that it does slow you down slightly BUT improves test and feature coverage by a lot more. Which would probably make up for the time lost in programming because you wouldn't have as many bugs to fix.

I am new to programming. You do need to set a limit right ? Else it will just loop. Right ?

Well yeah but the console will keep running.
>>
>>53595667
Most terminals will let you stop the program with ctrl+c.

It will probably go too far past the first 100 before you get to stop it though so yes you need to set a limit or add some delay to the printing if you are interested in the first few numbers or a set amount or whatever

itis not really too important I feel

>and honestly 'cd..' is such a common mistype that even experienced cli users often have the alias in their rc.

I don't give a shit if you fuck up 8 change directory commands in a row.

But if I were to do that I wouldn't take a photo of it (without using my hands apparently) and then put it on Instagram to show all of my followers how amazingly smart and geeky I am. If I did that I'd be rightfully laughed at. But she can do it because she's got a vagina and her fans see text on a black screen and think its really impressive that OMG A GIRL can use a terminal.
