upgrade to 8 for cheap, get a T9600 and drop it in for cheap, 500GB or 1TB drive for cheap, dualboot win7/Debian.
replace DVD drive with a second hard drive caddy and another cheap 1TB drive.
done.

For Linux, 2G is a good amount of ram. Almost any distro should work. Debian ought to run nicely on it.
