Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I will replace the keyboard but I want to upgrade the screen with an IPS one, from the x220. Is it possible?
>>
>>53588942
if the damage to the screen was caused by liquid on the keyboard, it probably damaged the board. A new screen might not fix the problem anon...

Though it also could have caused the screen to short or something. Hard to say with liquid, don't get your hopes up too much though, man.

X220, honestly. The resolution sucks for sure, but at least there's the option for IPS and even the TN panel is much less offensive to the eyes than the T420's.

had both

x220 if you go outside/to class and want something portable to take notes on (bonus: i also put os x on mine at the time)

t420 if you never leave your basement and want to stuff a quad core into it and shove it on a dock to use as a desktop replacement

between those two, i'd pick the x220 since i like getting cozy in bed with a laptop

Went from T420 to X220t.

Wish I still had the 9-cell battery of the T420 (X220 had them too, but the tablets did not).

Also miss the screen latch and how easily the screen was to open yet still being sturdy, have to use both hands on the X220t and it's a little wobbly, but that's because tablet.

T420 was easy to grip by the sides, X220 not so much because the keyboard goes edge to edge. It was just something to get used to after using the T420 for awhile. Now I just grip the battery and throw it around.

The smaller footprint of the X220 is great and they use the same size keyboards.

Definitely don't miss the turd shite display from the T420. Very sharp and bright IPS in my X220t.

Also tablet mode is fun to use every once and awhile.

Is the T420 display really /that/ shitty? I was erring more towards the T520 since people seem to feel so strongly about the T420's screen, but I'm starting to think that maybe it's a tiny bit too fuckhueg. Furthermore, assuming "yes" to the earlier question, are there any IPS 1080 screen replacements available for the T420?

Oh, and lastly, are factory T520s with the FHD screen rare? I wasn't able to find any (although I didn't look particularly hard).
>>
>>53593219
I used a T420 with the 1366 x 768 screen for 4 years during HS, and currently use one now with the same res. Its not horrible, but if you really value a nice display there are certainly better thinkpads with better screens on the market right now.
>>
I've just bought x220 with 8gb ram for 22k rub(~325$). How fucked up am I?
>>
>>53593302
Thanks. I'm not a displayfag, so a decent screen is fine enough. I intend in large part to use it as an HTPC so it's mostly going to be hooked up to an external display anyway. Outside of that usage, though, I've heard some people describe the screen as "one of the worst screens in existence", so I was a little bit concerned.
>>
>>53593302
>T420 in H.S
Lucky guy, I was in HS form 2010 to 2014 and all I had was C2D, not even business class stuff until 2015.
>>
>>53593219
It really is awful. I've never even seen an IPS screen before, but the T420 screen is horrible even among TN panels. Definitely get the T520, having a screen that you won't hate to look at is well worth the increased size and weight. You don't even have to get a 1080p screen, even the 900p one is vastly superior to the T420's.
>>
>>53593431
The year I left they were switching from X220s to Macbooks, but they werent "rentals" from the school, you bought them when you entered the school and they came with the spy bloatware and editing programs for our classes.. I worked in the IT dept doing repairs, we had an extra stock of 50-75 T420s and X220s. Shame I didnt think to take some before I left, didnt really get into the thinkpad or linux ways until college.
>>
>>53593501
Thanks for you input.

Really, my main gripe about getting the T520 is size. Granted, it's not going to be a particularly mobile laptop by any means, mostly just going to be something I use around the house. Is it at least reasonably portable enough for the occasional excursion, however?
>>
>>53593408
Really the T420 is a perfect laptop, except for it's screen. If it had an IPS panel, I would fug this laptop. But the screen really is so dogshit I can't use it.

not really, you can find T430's for under $300 and the RAM+SSD is about $200.

Depends what you have used in the past, but I've only noticed the difference when I had bought an X61s of how bulkier it is.
I've gotten used to the bulkyness, sometimes I like how it feels when I have the X61 with the ultrabase, just feels a bit more secure.

if anything it would feel like a 14" laptop at times.

I like to use my tablet features to draw, but I am not really an artist... just like to doodle :3
I haven't used the thing much since I've had it due to performance.

Latest acquisition: Thinkpad 600X with original manuals and install discs, PCMCIA networking equipment, floppy drive and a screen that is somehow brighter than my T42. Not in pristine shape but certainly less beat up than my T400. $40 off Kijiji.

I'm actually surprised at how modern this thing feels considering it's 16 years old. And the build quality is outstanding.

If you don't mind the chiclet keys and the loss of the 7th keyboard row, the T430 is the way to go. Better screens than the T440 (but still pretty fucking horrid) and much, much quicker by virtue of having a full-voltage CPU.

I've had a X220 for years and recently got a X220T. The weight of the X220 is noticeably lighter than the weight of the X220T, but it doesn't make much of a difference to me. To me, it only matters that I can securely pick it up with one hand while it is open so that I can move from room to room, and I can do that with both laptops pretty easily. If you look at the picture of the X220, you can see that the top of the screen has a curvature that makes it easy to grip it with a thumb on the front and your fingers in the back - that's what I'm use to and I've done it for years without a problem. The X220T doesn't have that curvature and instead is sort of a smooth single panel and it does not feel good to grab which bothered me at first. However, above the Delete,Home,PgUp keys there's an empty space where I can stick my thumb and grab the laptop. There's also a spot above the Esc key where I can stick my thumb and grab my laptop. I don't know if it was intentionally designed that way, but it is a super comfy way to grab the X220T while it's open and carry it with one hand.

If you know you aren't going to use the tablet features, then the X220 is obviously a better choice. If you think you might even want to play around with the tablet features and don't mind paying like $30 extra, then the X220T is a better choice. They are both smallish enough for me, although they aren't as slim and light as currentyear laptops.

>>53598787
I'll probably replace the screen with one from an X1 Carbon if I go for one of the older models, so that won't be a problem. Is the T420's keyboard much better? Because the T430 on offer has slightly better specs.

>>53598792
It was on Gumtree and I'm in South Africa, so I think my suspicion is justified. Both are actually about $200 but I'll have to add around $100 on top of that if I end up replacing the screen like I said above.
>>
>>53598961
the X1 carbon swap is still a TN panel, unfortunately.

The T420's keyboard is incredibly comfortable, and the 7 row layout is unquestionably superior. But people say that, in use, the newer six row chiclet keyboard still has a good feel to it (aside from the function key row). I wouldn't buy a T420 just for the older keyboard

not to mention, you can swap out the T430 keyboard for a T420 one if you really want.
>>
>>53598721
I think screenfetch just shows what the max CPU frequency is for the chip. If it was sitting at that frequency there would definitely be problems.

Nope, never noticed anything like that on mine. Probably depends on how often the owner rotates it, which I rarely do and the previous owner probably didn't do it too much either.

btw x220t is guaranteed to have an IPS screen, while not all x220 have IPS screens. I wouldn't get a x220 with a TN screen, I heard they aren't as good.

The x220t ips screen should be either outdoor or multitouch. You can only use a pen with outdoor, but multitouch you can use the pen or fingers. Some sellers don't specify if they are selling multitouch or not, so you need to either get lucky or ask. Most units are multitouch, I think.

Also, the X220 IPS screen seems to have more vivid colors and the X220T screen looks like it has a plastic screen protector embedded on it, which I suppose is supposed to help the digitizer function or something I guess. Not a big deal for me, but I suppose the X220 IPS screen is better.

Most would be yes. The outdoor was an uncommon option and sometimes not available at all. And yes it's a plastic overlay - which is the touch digitiser itself (although the wacom digitiser is underneath on the other side). Note that there's also an air gap (much like the previous XGA X61t and whatnot). The outdoor one has no gap, instead being glass glued to the panel (not unlike the SXGA+ X61t)

I spent $50 on an x130e. Honestly I really would've probably preferred the x120e. Shit, the x120e still has the sexy Thinkpad look.

I bought it on an auction via eBay. It's a laptop meant for the education market, meaning it's pretty durable. Probably explains why they chose a shitty curve lid. The inside is a Thinkpad design with a chiclet keyboard. I like it.

It came with a SHITTON of bloatware. Since when did Thinkpads come with bloatware? Windows 7 was slow as hell. Yeah it's like a 1.3GHz AMD E-300 APU but it's not that bad, so I'm blaming the bloatware.

I'm on the Xubuntu livecd and it's pretty damn smooth right now. Going to install Xubuntu side by side with Windows 7 (since I'd still like to keep Windows 7 for other tasks).

Any tips or advice on this thing? Anyone have a x130e? Just interested in the thoughts of other people on this laptop. i'm feeling a bit of buyer's remorse but really I just wanted a cheap $50 laptop to have until I can afford something better.

How does this make it worse for everybody involved?

This is how I see it.

10 day auction, someone laptop starts at $20, but then gets bid up to $300 that same day, laptop stays at $300 for the rest of the auction.

People who wanted to get that laptop for under $300 are discouraged, they look elsewhere.

10 day auction, laptop started at $20, it went up to $80 on last day, a lot of watchers because laptop was cheap and everyone wanted a good deal. Last 10 minutes, laptop is at $100, bids are going everywhere, laptop hits $300, everyone who is on their phone or on eBay gets notified of it ending.

People all bid at the last hour and minutes, what I have seen is that people would watch it if its a low price rather than it hit the price they wouldn't want to pay.

I don't know the full knowledge of how the sniper works but I do know that if two or twelve people bid on the same amount, eBay will choose to let the person who bid that amount first win. So even if you did use the sniper at $300 you would lose it as it would of bid on it last. What I don't know is if the sniper is that fast to bid on it the nanosecond before it ends, even so, I would presume eBay would sort out that the person who bid on it first, would still of won. Plus you could only snipe for so long before you'd have to pay that percentage of it.

The benefit I would guess is that the sniper would let you cancel snipes if you see better deals you want to win.

ThinkPad enthusiasts didn't like those models as they were not built without a magnesium frame and had a lesser durable build quality than the R series.
Its mainly the keyboard layout.

But honestly if you've never had a ThinkPad before, I don't think it would really matter, they are good. I'm one of the few who liked the Yoga 11e.

Besides there really isn't a 13" ThinkPad other than the X300, X1, or the ThinkPad 13, so even so if you wanted a laptop that was smaller than the T420 but not as small as the X230 then yeah, I see a good reason to get the E330.

W-why would you pay more for less SSD space?
>>
I'm close to buying my first T420. Is there a quick rundown of the particular hardware differences in the various T420 models that I should be wary of? I've been looking after a 200 eurocuck machine with i5, 8GB RAM, an SSD and a brand new battery, what other specs I should double check?

I'll just copy this from the Gixen website:
>As eBay is using proxy bidding, legitimate question is - why snipe at all? If you submit your bid at eBay early, and if your maximum bid is higher than that of a sniping user, you will win regardless. While this fact is true, user experience and even some scientific research conducted says that sniping does pay. Here are some reasons why.
>Your early bid is an important information for other bidders. This specially applies to rare items, value of which is directly determined by interest. Other bidders may realize true value of an item only after you submit your bid. By bidding early, you are helping them, and that's against your own interest.
>Bidders tend to be overly optimistic, and therefore enter value lower than what they are really ready to pay. Leave them time to bid again after being outbid, and you will end up paying more, or lose the item you are bidding on.
>Bidders get excited during auctions, and are often ready to bid way more than what is rational.
>Ever been victim of shill bidding? It's a fraudulent practice used by some sellers to inflate the price of an item by using another eBay ID to bid on their own item (and retracting bid if they go too far. Be especially careful if bidders' IDs are kept private). If you use sniping, fraudulent sellers have no time to conduct shill bidding.
>You can change your mind at any time before auction ends by deleting your scheduled snipe. This is much easier than retracting a bid on eBay.
>It's almost always good for you to use sniping. In the worst case, you may end up paying a tiny fraction more, because early bidder has a small advantage in fact that your bid has to be a bit higher (search for "Bidding increments" in eBay help), however situations 1-4 above by far outweigh this. Generally, less known the fair value of an item, it's more beneficial to use sniping.
TL;DR - Early bidding almost always results in a higher end price, for little benefit.

So I'm thinking about a x220

Could I just buy a cheap one and boost it with an ssd, put a i7 in it(the one in the i7 version) and put 8g of ram?

Is the build of the i5 the same as the i7 version?
>>
>>53608885
first gen i5's are poo

look for t420's
>>
>>53609893
you'll need to swap the whole motherboard if you want to swap the cpu

the rest is modular, yes

You know they are selling you the product and making it as nice as it sounds so you can use it, right?

Their sniper isn't guaranteed against other people who bid at last minute or snipe.

While yes, I agree that early bids may bring up a price of an item, but guess what, that's how demand works. There are people on eBay who scourge auctions only, with the mentality of getting a better deal.

Also I've found buying items/best offers work far far better in getting deals than auctions, granted some people may not bid on certain items because they don't like how it looks, regardless of someone 'bidding early', there are lots of parts laptops out there that get 1 bid and they are under $100.

The whole premise of them selling their sniper is based upon other people not bidding it up high. It will not benefit you at all if there are x amount of people bidding and doing the same thing and will bid last hour/minute, because guess what, they'll bid the same amount you probably will or more.

No point in using it after the free sniping offer, as you'll end up paying the percentage to them rather than none if you did the same shit on eBay.

I think i7 units came with USB 3.0, but yeah you'll have to mobo swap.

I got a T440s for cheap, it's ok so far, but using a mouse is a pain in the ass. I'm waiting for the non castrated trackpad in the mail, it can't come soon enough.

How can I know its a mobo for the i7? I looked on ebay and there not much info about the cpu version.

Anyway I make an approx. calcul based on ebay:

X220= 60$
i7= 65$
ssd= 90$
ram 8g= 65$
battery=40$
powersupply= 20$

around 320$ without the mobo
Should I just buy the i7 version and just add ram and ssd?

I got an X220 in great condition yesterday. Came with the docking station, Windows 7 pro, and two AC adapters for $180.

It was cheaper than the Chromebook I had already.

Yeah I would buy i7 or it will be a huge hassle. I have the top class i5 and it runs super smooth. I'm sure you'll love the i7
>>
>>53610247
the difference between the i5 and i7 is almost nothing, they are both dual cores anyways

unless you really need that extra .2 GHz for rendering or whatever you're doing

Most important x220 upgrades IMO:
IPS screen>ssd>RAM>i7

Any of you used Gixen for eBay sniping?

I just want a cheap T420 in EU.

I did an ebay search of 'X220 i7 motherboard' and gotten a few good results.
It will cost you more if you go this way though, unless like you take a risk on a bad machine, or get a bios locked X220
