If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

From the T400-T430 era the quality of keyboards took a step back, they thinned out the keyboard backplate which lead to the flex.

On the newer machines the keyboard is properly reenforced so there's no flex.

Had my T520 for a few days now and I'm loving it, the keyboard is so amazing, the space bar is linear as no matter where you hit it and the keys have a really nice kind of break point to them. I went from a shit Microsoft membrane keyboard to this and its great, Pretty sure I will have to get a mechanical for my next desktop, but that will be in a long time since my T520 is my desktop.

Once I have my egpu adapter its going to be running my triple monitor setup from my old desktop (or dual, cos I donated one to my mother and probably wont get it back) and when the i7 gets here I'm going to have twice the CPU power as my desktop (phenom ii x3) and half the power consumption.

Now I just need to buy memory, a battery and a SSD. I don't mind spending heaps on this project since Its still cheaper than buying a new laptop with similar performance and I get to have the awesome thinkpad chassis and keyboard.

Also, no one told be it would have a light that shines on the keyboard, its so damn cool! Feel like a spy whenever I use it.

I found a x220 in pretty decent condition, I upgraded the ram to 16gb, and samsung 512gb ssd, I bought a battery slice, and installed linux and finally have the best configuration for it; its my road warrior; the only issue I've noticed with the screen is (IPS) model has a lot of ghosting, image retention; when I suspend the computer it's gone..wheres a good reliable source for a new screen? I see a lot of fakes and bad reviews.

so far this looks the most legit. but highly pricing, almost as much as I paid for the laptop itself.

Related - replace your wifi card and your system will run significantly cooler (all of that heat you feel on the right side of the palmrest is from one component). You'll need to flash a new BIOS to remove the hardware whitelist but it's not hard.
>>
>>53564484
How much would a new card cost?
>>
>>53564496

Chump change.

I think the model most people go for is the Intel 6200, which is less than $15 online (although you'll probably need a half height to full height bracket for a few extra cents).

If no one chimes in here with the info than check the X6x section at forum.thinkpads.com and there will probably be a tutorial in there somewhere.

Have the opportunity to grab one of these for dirt cheap through work. Is it worth it? I'm a bit skeptical of the more recent Thinkpad models, but the most recent iteration of the Yoga has an i5-6200u and 940m which is pretty killer if I can get it for ~$400.

Also, my x220 is amazing but it's started to heat up a lot. It is an i5-2540m model and I don't want to stop using it. Would re-applying thermal paste actually affect anything significantly or is that just a meme? What should I do with it to help it out? For reference it will hit 90c sometimes if it stays on for too long while charging which just doesn't seem right.

I'm in the market x220 Tablet. (possibly none tablet)
I'm curious if there is a significant difference between the i7 and i5 concerning power, heat and power consumption.
Also I would love to hear any opinions on Tablet or no. OG has more battery life, but part of my uses for this machine is note taking involving lots of diagrams and DMing, so the touch screen has its uses for me.
Also, according to the Lenovo datasheets, only the Tablet has Bluetooth? Can anyone verify that?

If you're going to use the tablet, get the tablet. If you don't want tablet features, don't get it. It's more fragile and a bit less graceful than the X220 because of the extra tablet features.

lifebook is love

absolute best feature of the T-series are the protected screens. The back has a magnesium alloy plate and the front bezel has a thick sheet of clear plastic The actual digitizer unit is mounted to the back of the LCD panel. You can grab and lift the laptop by the screen without damaging the display, or put it in your bag in tablet mode without worry.

The T5010 has a great screen for drawing because of it's flush bezel, though calibration is tricky because there's a small distance between the protector and the panel.

The T730 and T900 series have a raised bezel like the Thinkpad X200t, but the benefit is that the drawing surface is closer to the screen. The T730 has a corrugated-looking screen bezel that seems to exist so that you can hook the pen nub into one of the valleys and accurately scroll down a page.

Also got a box of T730 screen protectors. After trashing about half of them trying to apply, I've found they have an interesting tacky surface to them that does a pretty good job of replicating the feel of writing on paper.

>>53563938
they seem to be popular business machines in some sectors despite Fujitsu's high prices.
My T5010 came from a CDW distributor and my T731 seems to have come from some kind of metalworking facility, judging by the metallic dust, heavy wear, and flecks of iron caught in the fields of the speaker drivers. It's also from St. Louis.

Isn't it fun to give these hard working machines a loving home?

if you want a cheap tablet with Thinkpad power, the answer is Lifebook. They use the same Wacom digitizers, most of the newer lines have BT modules and multitouch, though both of mine are pen-only. Also if you're DMing, the bidirectionally-rotating screen should come in handy.
I'd recommend a T901, as it's got a 2nd-gen i5 that's a little faster than the X220t and you can drop an i7 in it later, as they were available with a i7-2620M from the factory.

There's a battery that goes in the optical drive slot, as well as a hard drive caddy. The stock battery is pretty good by itself too, I get about 6 hours in Windows on my T731.
The T5010, T730, T900 etc all use the same accessories and batteries, and even a lot of the same plastics and hardware, so parts are rather plentiful, especially as Fujitsu merely updated the chipsets with every revision. The T901 is a T900 with a 2nd-gen CPU, and the T900 is merely an upgrade of the Penryn-powered T5010 with a redesigned screen.

if you absolutely must have a trackpoint, you may be able to swap keyboards with one from a Lifebook E8420. I've never attempted this, but it appears to have the exact same dimensions, layout, and connector from the pics I could find on the internets. Unfortunately, it's rather rare. If I see one pop up for a good price I'll try it.

and yes, they are rather ugly but it's what's inside that counts.

>>53566378

Not to shit on you personally, but the X130 series is fucking garbage imo, I deploy them at the school district I work at and they are slow as fuck, not to mention the trackpad grit + height makes it just absolutely awful to use for more than 5 minutes. Hand starts cramping instantly.

I come here looking for guidance.

After doubting a bit at first if getting a T400 or a T420 I already settled for the T420.

Did my research and I'm probably buying one of these, I'm looking for input on the price/bang for buck.

He takes offers on this one, so I considered trying to get it for 20 bucks less, upgrading the RAM to 8GB myself, and buying a 128Gb SSD to use along with the HDD, or just getting a 256Gb SSD.

Thoughts?

Hey guys,
First time thinkpad owner here. I just received a W700 for free from a friend who was about to throw it away.
Checked with ThinkWiki and the important features that can change between W700 versions that I have are:
NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700M (1024 MB)
Intel® Core™2 Extreme QX9300 (4×2.53GHz, 2×6 MB L2, 1066 MT/s, 45 watt)
17" TFT display with 1920x1200 (WUXGA) resolution (400 Nits)
2x250 GB 5400rpm 2.5" SATA HDD
Intel Wifi Link 5300 (AGN)
Serial UltraBay Enhanced Blu-ray Burner
Integrated Fingerprint Reader
1.3MP Integrated camera
WACOM Digitizer Pad
4GB DDR3

It has botnet 10+avast on it and lenovo proprietary hardware obsoleting drivers + gameworks style manager app. I Immediately covered up the camera and made sure to disable any wireless connectivity. I still have to backup files for him but once I am done I'll wipe it and install something normal.

So how lucky am I, what should I install that has drivers that support the draw board(is it even good?) and am I going to recover from having the lenovo shit installed? The battery has 30min lifetime and there's an error showing up during boot for the second hard disk but it seems to be mounted and working when Win is up.

I need a bit of buying advice chaps, everything I look at seems to be an unhappy compromise, I'm trying to get a laptop that:

-Has a good quality, IPS, display, with resolution of at least 1080p (preferably 16:10, but it doesn't matter). 17" formfactor is preferred, but again, not essential.
-Has a well performing quad core CPU (or the ability to upgrade to one), which, more importantly, is well cooled. I'll need this to be able to run all core at 100% usage for weeks on end without throttling.
-RAM etc. seems to be a nonissue, everything has plenty
-A dedicated GPU is preferable. I use CUDA for some things, and I also enjoy being able to play a few games - I don't care about graphical fidelty, just 30fps+ at native resolution. This bit seems to be causing me the greatest issues, again this may need to run for weeks on end without overheating, so a separate heatsink is probably best.

So, with this in mind, the Dell lattitude/precision laptops seem best, but they don't (at least in the UK) appear to be competitively priced. Anyone have suggestions?

I've got a problem with my t420 ultrabay lock.
As in, it effectively doesn't exist.

Second-hand, almost perfect besides the fact that it has the plastic sliding part that actually pushes the drive out, but the plastic lock piece has no spring or anything to hold it in place. So the drive just sort of... falls out. Luckily I barely use CD/DVDs or this would be a horrible problem.

I've looked at the manual, but I can't find a detailed enough diagram to see exactly what's missing.

>>
>>53572305
if you've got a lock piece but no spring, then you're missing a spring
you can just take a few different clicky pens apart to find a spring that'll fit

however, it is literally mountains of effort to reinstall that plastic lock piece
iirc, i had to take the entire palmrest out a few years ago when mine fell out (nbd, since i was replacing the cpu with a quad core anyways)

Not the same as low cost. What I'm asking for is information on laptops that meet those specifications, especially with regards the cooling solutions, that are not necessarily dells.
>>
I know a large majority of you don't use your thinkpad for playing games, but I purchased a fresh T420 with no drive for cheap. Good specs and I'm pretty sure I installed everything properly, but I get some odd stuttering in some online games when I'm on a wireless connection. Is there a recommended set of drivers you guys have for the networking card? I just installed whatever from the Lenovo site. I suspect it might just be my wifi connection, but I wanted to see if I was missing something.

Beyond that, my T420 is incredible. I spent about $400 total for it including an SSD and extra memory (only came with 4) . I'm not a fan of how the slice battery ruins the sharp boxiness of it all, but I can't complain about the battery life. Thanks for making me fall for the meme.

I have a X200s and a pretty good desktop, and I'm thinking about replacing both with

- a dock
- maybe also a NAS

What could go wrong? I've stopped gayming but still downgrading from i5-4670K @ 4.2 GHz and GTX 660 to ULV i5 and integrated GPU worries me
>>
>>53572800
They're very comfy yes, and my T420 almost never gets above slightly warm. Even when running heavier programs.

For movie watching, though, keep in mind that most popular mid-size thinkpads come with 1366x768, which is suffering. You can upgrade to 1600x900 with an extra HD+ cable and a new screen, or get a bit more expensive model with 1080. But most of them are not not the best for HD movies unless you're okay with 720p.
>>
>>53572591

That's a good deal.

A lot of people in this thread worship T420's and think that paying more than $180 for a laptop is a waste. Just get what you want man.
>>
>>53572730
Honestly no, the CPU is too slow, and on a laptop that old youre gambling 110€ that it'll even last more than a few months.

Do the T601F with an Intel board, get the Advanced Dock, and get a desktop GPU to put in it. You'll get greatly improved performance all around, but the GPU in particular will be way better than any internal card you could get on a T60 or T61 motherboard, and you won't have to settle for a newer, inferior Thinkpad. The R7 240 I've got in mine effectively obsoletes my Nvidia T420, with better performance in every game I've tried except Metal Gear Rising, which is known for being CPU-heavy.

Goodbye /tpg/, I'm moving on from the thinkpad. Good luck to those still waiting, I hope the anniversary edition actually comes out and it doesn't suck.
>>
>>53578506

Yes, but you'll have problems with cooling.
>>
Hey guys, I know its not a thinkpad, but I wanted to ask about a change to my laptop.

I have an acer aspire e5-511-p0gc
http://www.amazon.com/Acer-15-6-Aspire-Laptop-E5-511-P0GC/dp/B00ODERZ8E/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1458430301&sr=8-6&keywords=acer+aspire+e5+511
That guy.
I have pretty good battery life, and use it while I'm learning programming, I was wondering if swapping out its 1tb drive for a 128gb ssd would add much to the battery life if I'm using it for something like programming?

I've never seen a more hideous laptop jesus christ
>>
>>53578579
The aspect ratio is nicer than anything Lenovo's been shitting out though.

Funny thing, my x301 is actually lighter than the surface book which is weird. The x301 was so close to my ideal laptop, too bad about the screen and battery life.

Ah the cheap chink shit posing as quality meme...

Hey /tpg/ I have a pretty puzzling question.

So currently I own a kitted out T400 with the dGPU. It does great for everything I like to do but being able to play games and run multiple monitors well from it would be really cool for when I visit my parents and things.

So I looked into an eGPU setup and in my search the Advanced Dock came up. Problem is, there isn't a definitive list of what is and isn't supported by it.

Does anyone have experience with these? It seems like a neater and cheaper option than an external GPU mount and such. It doesn't need to be a great card so long as it is capable of basic games and multitasking (even my old GT220 I have lying around would be enough).

HOW DO I CONVERT MY X220T TO BLUETOOTH 4.0?
>>
>>53579102

New bluetooth card or expresscard extension.
>>
>>53578943
Actually I'm wondering about this too.
>>
>>53578943

It's a bit buried so I won't berate you for not reading the OP:

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkPad_Advanced_Dock

There's a list of supported models at the bottom.

My question is -- what's the best video card that will fit in it that's reasonable considering the bus limitation?

I lost, but at least that last second bid war cost the winning asshole a good $40 extra. So I still feel good.

Why have Lenovo stopped making laptops like pic related?

I got one about 10 days ago off eBay in basically pristine condition, its like its been used for 2 weeks then just put in a box and left for the rest of the time until it was sold again.

Its a brilliant size and looks great, the size of it means its much more comfortable to use the trackpoint and its buttons, its got decent power and its just brilliant, its my favorite ThinkPad.

Its basically an updated x121e, the shell is identical minus the silver accenting.

>it's a risk we are willing to take
Just checked on PayPal, the email for the seller isn't registered, he has other listings for dirt cheap items like this, seems very scammy.
>>
>>53580978

I'm confident in PayPals buyer protection. Between them and AmEx, I should be able to get my money back.
>>
>>53580828
Seller does not offer returns. You are covered by the eBay Money Back Guarantee if you received an item that is not as described in the listing.

Hes probably going to spam sales and dip with what ever eBay lets through.
>>
>>53580597
Can you get a PayPal refund or is a way that they can prevent you. He only has 20 sales so this looks like a scam.
>>
>>53581078

eBay doesn't release the money to a new seller until 3 days after the tracking number has been marked as delivered. So how could he scam? His listings are copied straight from Lenovo though.
>>
>>53581078
they are described as new, so if i get shipped a brick in a box, im probably ok right?
>>
>>53581130
You aren't getting shipped anything m8.
