Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

but my keyboard is in perfect shape anon.
>>53562752
From the T400-T430 era the quality of keyboards took a step back, they thinned out the keyboard backplate which lead to the flex.
On the newer machines the keyboard is properly reenforced so there's no flex.

Should I pay 20 bucks more for an IPS X220?
>>53562939
u kiddin rite
of course
Had my T520 for a few days now and I'm loving it, the keyboard is so amazing, the space bar is linear as no matter where you hit it and the keys have a really nice kind of break point to them. I went from a shit Microsoft membrane keyboard to this and its great, Pretty sure I will have to get a mechanical for my next desktop, but that will be in a long time since my T520 is my desktop.
Once I have my egpu adapter its going to be running my triple monitor setup from my old desktop (or dual, cos I donated one to my mother and probably wont get it back) and when the i7 gets here I'm going to have twice the CPU power as my desktop (phenom ii x3) and half the power consumption.
Now I just need to buy memory, a battery and a SSD. I don't mind spending heaps on this project since Its still cheaper than buying a new laptop with similar performance and I get to have the awesome thinkpad chassis and keyboard.
Also, no one told be it would have a light that shines on the keyboard, its so damn cool! Feel like a spy whenever I use it.

It also has less ram (4GB compared to 8GB) but it also has a 320GB HDD w/ W10 instead of a 120GB SSD W/ W7, so that seems to be a better deal.

This is after it's been online for a while and had a webm on loop.
I found a x220 in pretty decent condition, I upgraded the ram to 16gb, and samsung 512gb ssd, I bought a battery slice, and installed linux and finally have the best configuration for it; its my road warrior; the only issue I've noticed with the screen is (IPS) model has a lot of ghosting, image retention; when I suspend the computer it's gone..wheres a good reliable source for a new screen? I see a lot of fakes and bad reviews.
so far this looks the most legit. but highly pricing, almost as much as I paid for the laptop itself.

Related - replace your wifi card and your system will run significantly cooler (all of that heat you feel on the right side of the palmrest is from one component). You'll need to flash a new BIOS to remove the hardware whitelist but it's not hard.
>>53564484
How much would a new card cost?
>>53564496
Chump change.
I think the model most people go for is the Intel 6200, which is less than $15 online (although you'll probably need a half height to full height bracket for a few extra cents).
If no one chimes in here with the info than check the X6x section at forum.thinkpads.com and there will probably be a tutorial in there somewhere.

Good to hear anon, if you're using Windows, i think you can get the Dolby drivers so you can have better and louder speakers.
I think it's available for the T520, not much different than a W520.
>>53562939
Yes!
>>53562556
Was that the guy who got it for under $400?
Have the opportunity to grab one of these for dirt cheap through work. Is it worth it? I'm a bit skeptical of the more recent Thinkpad models, but the most recent iteration of the Yoga has an i5-6200u and 940m which is pretty killer if I can get it for ~$400.
Also, my x220 is amazing but it's started to heat up a lot. It is an i5-2540m model and I don't want to stop using it. Would re-applying thermal paste actually affect anything significantly or is that just a meme? What should I do with it to help it out? For reference it will hit 90c sometimes if it stays on for too long while charging which just doesn't seem right.

I'm in the market x220 Tablet. (possibly none tablet)
I'm curious if there is a significant difference between the i7 and i5 concerning power, heat and power consumption.
Also I would love to hear any opinions on Tablet or no. OG has more battery life, but part of my uses for this machine is note taking involving lots of diagrams and DMing, so the touch screen has its uses for me.
Also, according to the Lenovo datasheets, only the Tablet has Bluetooth? Can anyone verify that?
>>53565230
i get this too, teres nothing wrong
>>53565277
If you're going to use the tablet, get the tablet. If you don't want tablet features, don't get it. It's more fragile and a bit less graceful than the X220 because of the extra tablet features.

absolute best feature of the T-series are the protected screens. The back has a magnesium alloy plate and the front bezel has a thick sheet of clear plastic The actual digitizer unit is mounted to the back of the LCD panel. You can grab and lift the laptop by the screen without damaging the display, or put it in your bag in tablet mode without worry.
The T5010 has a great screen for drawing because of it's flush bezel, though calibration is tricky because there's a small distance between the protector and the panel.
The T730 and T900 series have a raised bezel like the Thinkpad X200t, but the benefit is that the drawing surface is closer to the screen. The T730 has a corrugated-looking screen bezel that seems to exist so that you can hook the pen nub into one of the valleys and accurately scroll down a page.
Also got a box of T730 screen protectors. After trashing about half of them trying to apply, I've found they have an interesting tacky surface to them that does a pretty good job of replicating the feel of writing on paper.
>>53563938
they seem to be popular business machines in some sectors despite Fujitsu's high prices.
My T5010 came from a CDW distributor and my T731 seems to have come from some kind of metalworking facility, judging by the metallic dust, heavy wear, and flecks of iron caught in the fields of the speaker drivers. It's also from St. Louis.
Isn't it fun to give these hard working machines a loving home?

>>53565277
if you want a cheap tablet with Thinkpad power, the answer is Lifebook. They use the same Wacom digitizers, most of the newer lines have BT modules and multitouch, though both of mine are pen-only. Also if you're DMing, the bidirectionally-rotating screen should come in handy.
I'd recommend a T901, as it's got a 2nd-gen i5 that's a little faster than the X220t and you can drop an i7 in it later, as they were available with a i7-2620M from the factory.

There's a battery that goes in the optical drive slot, as well as a hard drive caddy. The stock battery is pretty good by itself too, I get about 6 hours in Windows on my T731.
The T5010, T730, T900 etc all use the same accessories and batteries, and even a lot of the same plastics and hardware, so parts are rather plentiful, especially as Fujitsu merely updated the chipsets with every revision. The T901 is a T900 with a 2nd-gen CPU, and the T900 is merely an upgrade of the Penryn-powered T5010 with a redesigned screen.
if you absolutely must have a trackpoint, you may be able to swap keyboards with one from a Lifebook E8420. I've never attempted this, but it appears to have the exact same dimensions, layout, and connector from the pics I could find on the internets. Unfortunately, it's rather rare. If I see one pop up for a good price I'll try it.
and yes, they are rather ugly but it's what's inside that counts.

Fellow T420 users who use TLP, could some of you pastebin your TLP configurations? Trying to tweak for more battery life. I also would like to know if it's possible to increase the max powersave governor frequency to 1Ghz, because I would like to sacrifice some battery life to be able to process webpages a little quicker, but for some reason setting MAX_FREQ_ON_BAT to 1Ghz doesn't seem to have any effect.
Anyone have any recommended settings for TLP for this model? Appreciate the help, /g/. Thanks!
>>53566564
Not to shit on you personally, but the X130 series is fucking garbage imo, I deploy them at the school district I work at and they are slow as fuck, not to mention the trackpad grit + height makes it just absolutely awful to use for more than 5 minutes. Hand starts cramping instantly.
Guise I need help on finding an IPS screen for x220. So many sellers, so many prices. I don't want to get a ghosting one :(
>>53566623
I mainly got it as a $50 laptop I could lie in bed with and do basic things. Nothing too intensive, just Netflix and maybe some programming and videos and other personal stuff. I thought it'd be fine for that. I wonder if I underestimate how old this is.
>>53566660
It's not really the age, it's the CPU it uses. AMD E-series are notoriously slow, even for light usage. Nice deal for $50 I guess, though.
is there any reason to buy a dock with keys besides to just have them?

>>53567987
I say get the T420 with 'minor damage' and 8gb ram, it probably isn't that bad and you don't have to mess with memory when you get it.

Hey guys,
First time thinkpad owner here. I just received a W700 for free from a friend who was about to throw it away.
Checked with ThinkWiki and the important features that can change between W700 versions that I have are:
NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700M (1024 MB)
Intel® Core™2 Extreme QX9300 (4×2.53GHz, 2×6 MB L2, 1066 MT/s, 45 watt)
17" TFT display with 1920x1200 (WUXGA) resolution (400 Nits)
2x250 GB 5400rpm 2.5" SATA HDD
Intel Wifi Link 5300 (AGN)
Serial UltraBay Enhanced Blu-ray Burner
Integrated Fingerprint Reader
1.3MP Integrated camera
WACOM Digitizer Pad
4GB DDR3
It has botnet 10+avast on it and lenovo proprietary hardware obsoleting drivers + gameworks style manager app. I Immediately covered up the camera and made sure to disable any wireless connectivity. I still have to backup files for him but once I am done I'll wipe it and install something normal.
So how lucky am I, what should I install that has drivers that support the draw board(is it even good?) and am I going to recover from having the lenovo shit installed? The battery has 30min lifetime and there's an error showing up during boot for the second hard disk but it seems to be mounted and working when Win is up.

>>53570549
That was my idea after checking prices for a while, also I rather use a brand new SSD.
The 4GB extra RAM (that I probably can live without) would cost me only 18 bucks and I figure it isn't hard to install, I'm just worried about incompatibilities with the already included stick.

I have a T60p with Linux that recently fucked up. It says that it suddenly can't recognize the GPU and I can only get command line. Its time for something new anyway, since the CPU and GPU just don't cut it in this thing, but I absolutely love the design so I'm torn. I've heard about Frankenpads for squeezing some more juice out of these old machines, is it worth it to do or would I be better off just picking up a new Dell or something?

You also need to underclock the GPU since when it wants to go into Turbo mode, it also boosts CPU in the process.
The max. frequency is controlled at
/sys/class/drm/card0/gt_max_freq_mhz
Set at 600-650 to disable GPU turbo.
Which is better for a larger Thinkpad option? T520 or W520?
I've had a T400 and a T420, but have never looked into the W-series. I need a laptop with a 1080p option so I'm looking at 520's now. What sets the W520 apart from the T520?

Quadcore W520s also have four RAM slots, while quadcore T520s only have two. The W520's 1080p screen is better, too.

Disable the trackpad and use it for a week. Once it clicks with you you'll never want to go back.
I need a bit of buying advice chaps, everything I look at seems to be an unhappy compromise, I'm trying to get a laptop that:
-Has a good quality, IPS, display, with resolution of at least 1080p (preferably 16:10, but it doesn't matter). 17" formfactor is preferred, but again, not essential.
-Has a well performing quad core CPU (or the ability to upgrade to one), which, more importantly, is well cooled. I'll need this to be able to run all core at 100% usage for weeks on end without throttling.
-RAM etc. seems to be a nonissue, everything has plenty
-A dedicated GPU is preferable. I use CUDA for some things, and I also enjoy being able to play a few games - I don't care about graphical fidelty, just 30fps+ at native resolution. This bit seems to be causing me the greatest issues, again this may need to run for weeks on end without overheating, so a separate heatsink is probably best.
So, with this in mind, the Dell lattitude/precision laptops seem best, but they don't (at least in the UK) appear to be competitively priced. Anyone have suggestions?
>>53571526
It feels pretty damn great. Took a little while to get used to it after using the old school Thinkpad keyboard on my X200, but now I prefer it.

I've got a problem with my t420 ultrabay lock.
As in, it effectively doesn't exist.
Second-hand, almost perfect besides the fact that it has the plastic sliding part that actually pushes the drive out, but the plastic lock piece has no spring or anything to hold it in place. So the drive just sort of... falls out. Luckily I barely use CD/DVDs or this would be a horrible problem.
I've looked at the manual, but I can't find a detailed enough diagram to see exactly what's missing.
2000 called they want their laptop design back
>>53572356
Tell them to fuck off, it's mine now
>>53572305
if you've got a lock piece but no spring, then you're missing a spring
you can just take a few different clicky pens apart to find a spring that'll fit
however, it is literally mountains of effort to reinstall that plastic lock piece
iirc, i had to take the entire palmrest out a few years ago when mine fell out (nbd, since i was replacing the cpu with a quad core anyways)
Guys, suggestion for someone looking for a solid ThinkPad that can run Linux w/o driver issues?

Not the same as low cost. What I'm asking for is information on laptops that meet those specifications, especially with regards the cooling solutions, that are not necessarily dells.
I know a large majority of you don't use your thinkpad for playing games, but I purchased a fresh T420 with no drive for cheap. Good specs and I'm pretty sure I installed everything properly, but I get some odd stuttering in some online games when I'm on a wireless connection. Is there a recommended set of drivers you guys have for the networking card? I just installed whatever from the Lenovo site. I suspect it might just be my wifi connection, but I wanted to see if I was missing something.
Beyond that, my T420 is incredible. I spent about $400 total for it including an SSD and extra memory (only came with 4) . I'm not a fan of how the slice battery ruins the sharp boxiness of it all, but I can't complain about the battery life. Thanks for making me fall for the meme.
Is a T400 good enough for Office and general use?
I can get one with 4GB of RAM for about 110€, a T420 would cost me more than twice.
Should I get an x200 for ÂŁ70 or an x220 for ÂŁ180?
How comfy are thinkpads for in-bed movie watching and skyping?
Do they overheat easily?
Should I even consider a thinkpad or should I look for something like a tablet?
>>53572591
yea.
that's a really good deal for the price, considering you get a nice resolution screen, a respectable SSD capacity, a good processor too.
>>53572800
>How comfy are thinkpads for in-bed movie watching and skyping?
Very
>Do they overheat easily?
Unless you're using the workstation models with restricted airflow, no.
>Should I even consider a thinkpad or should I look for something like a tablet?
Yes, some thinkpads can even become tablets.
>>53572746
I'd get the X220. I have an old X200, and even with an SSD it is slow as fuck.
I have a X200s and a pretty good desktop, and I'm thinking about replacing both with
- X260/T460s
- a dock
- maybe also a NAS
What could go wrong? I've stopped gayming but still downgrading from i5-4670K @ 4.2 GHz and GTX 660 to ULV i5 and integrated GPU worries me
>>53572800
They're very comfy yes, and my T420 almost never gets above slightly warm. Even when running heavier programs.
For movie watching, though, keep in mind that most popular mid-size thinkpads come with 1366x768, which is suffering. You can upgrade to 1600x900 with an extra HD+ cable and a new screen, or get a bit more expensive model with 1080. But most of them are not not the best for HD movies unless you're okay with 720p.
>>53572591
That's a good deal.
A lot of people in this thread worship T420's and think that paying more than $180 for a laptop is a waste. Just get what you want man.
>>53572730
Honestly no, the CPU is too slow, and on a laptop that old youre gambling 110€ that it'll even last more than a few months.
>>53572921
Why not just get a W541 or P50 if you want desktop performance?
>>53573086
Well the reason Im considering getting rid of my desktop is precisely because I don't think I need desktop performance anymore
And I don't want anything bigger than 14"
>>53573058
I'll go for the T420 then since it is under 300€.
Also considering the x220 but I'm not sure if it would be a good idea to trade 1600x900 screen resolution for more portability.

Do the T601F with an Intel board, get the Advanced Dock, and get a desktop GPU to put in it. You'll get greatly improved performance all around, but the GPU in particular will be way better than any internal card you could get on a T60 or T61 motherboard, and you won't have to settle for a newer, inferior Thinkpad. The R7 240 I've got in mine effectively obsoletes my Nvidia T420, with better performance in every game I've tried except Metal Gear Rising, which is known for being CPU-heavy.
Anyone possess a 240x??
What's the best place to buy a good, inexpensive battery for a T420? a 55++ maybe.
So, I've got an X230T that I've recently loaded windows 10 on. It is just...horribly slow in the oddest ways. For instance, when typing this, the screen rendered it horribly slow.

>>53562509
Ah the cheap chink shit posing as quality meme...
Hey /tpg/ I have a pretty puzzling question.
So currently I own a kitted out T400 with the dGPU. It does great for everything I like to do but being able to play games and run multiple monitors well from it would be really cool for when I visit my parents and things.
So I looked into an eGPU setup and in my search the Advanced Dock came up. Problem is, there isn't a definitive list of what is and isn't supported by it.
Does anyone have experience with these? It seems like a neater and cheaper option than an external GPU mount and such. It doesn't need to be a great card so long as it is capable of basic games and multitasking (even my old GT220 I have lying around would be enough).

The slot can provide up to 50W, but you're going to run out of space before you have to worry about hitting that limit. From my research, the best card you can put in it right now is the R7 240. It just barely fits, but it's only a 30W card so heat isn't a concern. Performance is good, obviously a massive improvement over any internal GPU among the T60/T61/T400 generations. I don't think the bus limitation is a major concern with it, since it's not a particularly powerful card to begin with and chances are good that in most any workload your Core 2 Duo is going to be the bottleneck rather than the GPU.

The **30 series introduced a new type of embedded controller(the so called "ThinkEngine") and ditched the old Renesas H8S EC. This new EC works differently than the ECs of older ThinkPads so the sensors can't be read on Linux and the most important feature, the APS, is not working because nobody has written a driver to read accelerometer data from the new ECs.
The only data that can be read is the fan speed and charge thresholds, via ACPI.
You could ask Lenovo because there's no way of readimg the sensors, otherwise you just need to heat portions of the board and see which sensor reported a temperature increase.
Welp,

Not exactly surprising. At least you can get the money back
>>53581456
Got the same message. Tried to open a case, eBay said the seller hasn't marked it as paid. Tried to open a case on PayPal, they said the transaction hasn't been completed yet. Welp, I guess I'll wait and see what happens.
>>53581493
eh,i just canceled payment on paypal, they are still on my orders page as payment pending though.
>>53581514
How do I do that?
>>53581539
paypals website, for me it said "whatever their name was hasn't accepted payment" and there was a cancel link next to it.
>>53581412
I've been getting consistent, predictable, makes-sense feedback from xfce's sensors applet for over a year now. Was just wondering where the spots are.
APS?

Full website or mobile?

full website

I used the mobile and did it. Thanks desu. I just clicked on the transaction and hit cancel at the botton.

Active Protection System
It uses an accelerometer to sense motion, if it detects freefall or any hard bumps, the OS parks the HDD to avoid a head crash.
It used to work very well on Linux up to the **20 series. It still works on Windows though
>>53581390
Thanks for the info, anon. Just might do this for my aging T601F. Cheers m8
>>53580597
This was my post.
Sorry I caused some of you some trouble, I also put an order in for one. Sucks for us.
>>53581797
I'm the anon who ordered 8. Don't worry. You win some, you lose some. Just go on Paypal and cancel the payment.
>>53581797
>>53581819

>>53581819
I'm the anon that didn't order because "100% scam"
Feels good m8

This is the sexiest thinkpad. Prove me wrong.
>>53582273
Literally a laptop with love handles.

I can not
Recently got a thinkpad t410 and for the life of me just cant get the temps down on the processor. I opened it up and repasted with fresh thermal paste and it still idles at 50-60 degrees Celsius. It jumps to 80 degrees on minecraft and videos. Fresh install of windows 7, fan and heatsink and clean and fresh thermal paste....whats the deal /g/?
>>53571065
>Thinkpad mech keyboard
Stuff of wet dreams
>>53582551
Get one. Theres a IBM Model M versions with trackpoint.
Does anybody have any experience buying thinkpads on ebay? What's with these ultra low priced entries? Will the sellers just take them down if they don't reach a reasonable price?
>>53582603
It always reaches a decent price. Most of the times at the very end. Check OP for info on eBay. Everyone here uses it, its where we get 90% of our units.
>>53580795
Take it easy, Khaled baby
>>53582603
You're bound to get sniped at the end. It's gonna jump up to well over $150. Don't worry.
>>53582602
Nigga if I could I'd be all up on one of those. Sadly they're harder to find than the goddam Grail and the Ark of the Covenant put together in my banana-ass backwards shithole of a country.
>>53569627
>>53569661
Ah the glory. I have 3. One for work, one for home, and one backup (that I had to replace the keyboard on (with a T420 salvage off ebay) because I got REAL MAD during a game of CSGO and did the SMASH). Also have one of the old T60 layout ones that lenovo made, found it at work and claimed it as my own.
So why the FUCK doesn't lenovo start making them again.
>>53570959
I'll look into it, but I actually don't mind it going into turbo because I watch my GoPro film at 1080@60 on the go and I don't think 600-650 will cut it. What I meant by the MAXFREQONBAT is that the minimum current frequency is 800mhz, and I can't get the laptop to scale to 1ghz when under load, with the powersave governor and all, and this makes web browsing a little sluggish on heavier pages. Anybody have any ideas? Using TLP, as I said before.
Just got an x220 tablet off of ebay. $300, pretty good condition minus a few scuffs on the bottom, scratches all over the antenna, sticker marks but the seller was an ass and hid pictures of the bottom right corner. Think it was dropped at least once, cracks, missing pieces, dents, and the right screen tab's missing bits so the screen moves if you hold it by anything but the battery. Not sure if I should try to reclaim the fee or try to get chassis parts to replace and repair myself. I can't help wanting everything to be pristine.
tl;dr $300 x220t, dented corner, mild loss of functionality. Did I fuck up, /g/?
>>53583574
If you're in the US, get a refund. Its worth half that in the current condition.
>>53583644
>Its worth half that in the current condition
Maybe not even, I saw a T420 on eBay that was gorgeous, for like $170
>>53583644
I should probably mention that I got it with 8gb ram, 160gb ssd, 9 cell and external batteries. Not sure how much that influences the price.
>>53583693
Tablet models don't have 9 cells available, but the slice and SSD still don't justify the high price in that condition. The 8GB is negligible, as you can buy 4GB DIMMS for 10 bucks.
I got an X220 Tablet and an X230 Tablet in damn-near pristine condition for 200 dollars each. You can find better.
>>53583722
Thanks for the info. Wish me luck, I suppose. Kind of surprised how much I've grown to like the design in only a couple of hours. You think the X230 is worth it even with the weird "island keys" as they call them?
>>53583804
Honestly, once (and if) you can get over the terribly inferior keyboard layout, it is great. The island keys definitely feel different, but are no less great than the original keys, as long as you win the manufacturer lottery.
Overall I'd say that the **30 ThinkPads are worth it, because, while I hate to admit it, the **20 ThinkPads are becoming outdated. The Ivy Bridge CPUs bring a little more to the table compared to Sandy Bridge, and since the **30s and **20s can be found for relatively similar prices (within $20 in my experience), it's better to go with the newer hardware.
As a final side-note, the **30s are also more likely to have active warranties.
>>53582452
^ any thoughts?
>be me
>T400 for 50 burgers, plus 15 shipping

>Cool beans, laptop for 50 bucks
>recieve it in mail, wrapped well enough
>side vent is wrecked to shit
>Contact seller
>"It wasn't like that when I sent it. That's unfortunate."
>"I'll send you another. You can keep that one."
This is too good to be true. H-how do I proceed? I want to believe in him.
>>53584104
>You can keep that one
2 Penryns for $50, damn fine deal.
>>53584104
Just wait if anything you can just get a refund and start shit. Plus possibility of two laptops.
>>53584124
Rot in hell, you swine.
>>53584116
>>53584124
What do I tell them in the meantime? "Okay, I'll be holding your Seller reputation hostage until I see the laptops."?
>>53584183
Just ride it out and take the two laptops, he said you can keep it, some sellers are like that, I've been sent higher end shit than what I ordered.
>>53584171
Oh okay then friendo. Ill have you know I am a great Ebayer nigga. :^)
>>53584183
I mean all you can do really. Its your insurance as the buyer.

>nowhere worth $300 in that condition and the tablet editions are a nightmare to do lid repairs on
Interesting. I decided to look at the original listing and it seems like either the seller lied, dropped it before shipping it, or it was damaged on shipping.
Looks like I get to go through that process.
