I like Windows 10 but I tried out Ubuntu for the first time a few days ago and something has been driving me insane since.

Why is Windows font rendering so awful? Especially in the modern/universal applications, which are being pushed as the default thing now. So, is it possible to fix the fonts or should I install Ubuntu and try move over?

Pic related, hopefully it's not just me it looks super shitty to.
>>
Unfortunately you can't change the font rendering for anything "new" (metro apps, menus and the new settings panel).

Anything else, either MacType or gdipp. gdipp is older but has no problems with kerning on non-hDPI displays. MacType still receives a few updates but it's better to use it with anything above 1080p.
>>
You can fix it on Windows 7 :^)
>>
>>53585604
The "fix" is exactly the same.
>>
>>53585541
I fixed it by formatting my windows partition
>>
>>53585609
Except it does not have the desired effect for Windows 10. Yeah.
>>
>>53585541
They both look like shit. Ever tried retina, Mr pleb?

This is what I assumed, I tried messing with cleartype and logging out and in but nothing seemed to make a difference, only on win32 applications.
I searched gdipp but everything is years old about it other than some posts saying it doesn't work with everything. I guess I'll try it later anyway, thanks.

>>53585623
I don't need retina for shitposting and watching porn, but I would like best possible I can get with what I have.
>>
>>53585616
That's because for new elements, like pointed out here >>53585588 it doesn't do dick.

But it's pretty much like saying "it doesn't do the same because on software Windows 7 doesn't have, it doesn't work". You could say it's half assed in W10/8.1 because -some- elements get replaced, but that's it.

Frankly rather than go back to Windows 7 for this, would rather use a decent operating system that's not Windows.

Wait I'm dumb, nothing univeral app can be changed right, I guess I won't be trying it then. Win32 looks fine, it's just the new shit but I actually find many of these "apps" useful and good to use.
>>
>>53585679
Yeah, none of that. MacType can't change it either.

I kinda need Windows myself so I'm completely fucked, but tell me, what keeps you on Windows specifically?
>>
>>53585699
>what keeps you on Windows specifically?

I just don't have any issues with it, gets out of my way and just do my shit.
Now it seems like I will have to put up with shitty fonts or buy a hdpi screen and replace my notebook with a hdpi one not to suffer this font hell.
>>
>>53585733
Just keep in mind, before you do that change your DPI to something like 125% or 150% so you know how it looks beforehand. I'm going to say that while hDPI is more bearable on Windows, I still find it to be poor rendering.
>>
>>53585541
>Why is Windows font rendering so awful?

Just the opposite. If you have a high dpi monitor you can see the HUGE difference bettween Windows 10 and any Linux DE.

Not only the font rendering is better, the way everything scales correctly too.
>>
>>53585761
You can adjust UI scaling to your display's DPI and everything will be scaled accordingly.
>>
>>53585867
dpi scaling in windows is in the bronze age compared to linux, and overall os x's handling of higher density displays (specifically 2x scaled, but not anything between 1x and 2x) is much better.

you might argue that linux can be configured to be just as good or better, but i've never seen anyone put a package together that makes it practical to recommend to others to use linux if they wanted to use a 24" 4k monitor alongside a 1920x1080 24" monitor (for instance).
>>
>>53585889
One thing I like better than both Windows and OSX on linux is that I can set custom DPI pretty easily without breaking anything. Windows has this setting but anything in between 100% / 125% / 150% breaks taskbar icons and some other elements. This doesn't happen on linux.

In OSX you would need a tool like SwitchResX for custom hDPI resolutions, but it would work fine. It's also possible to add custom resolutions manually but that might be a little bit of a pain.

That's the result of letting indians in charge of development

WInblows 10 uses grayscale AA which looks shit on LCD screens. Get back to 7 or 8.1, you're not missing anything from 10.

Looks the same on those normal sized menus

Look at 'Personalize' word how blurry is on W10

Doesn't look blurry to me

It gets much worse when you have white/light background and black text.

Look at this thread in edge, also same shit when reading the contents of emails in Outlook.

Does MacType work without problems on Windows 7? Or does it sometimes bug out or show bad rendering or something?

Am on a 1440p monitor FWIW.

That's terribly hard if not impossible to achieve with Xorg.
That's one of the problems wayland aims to solve, support for multi monitor setup with different dpi

Gnome 3 did a good job on scaling settings.
>>
>>53586969
>>53586914
the normal sized screenshots in that picture are scaled down and blurry
>>
>>53586914

Equally, though, Win10 looks a massive amount better on hi-PPI displays
