Old thread: >>53556449 (Cross-thread)

Welcome to /flt/, we are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

lubuntu.

first put windows fix on a stick, go trough cmd fix your boot.

Then re-install linux/gnu - use lubuntu this time, it will make the proper GRUB.

it'll just werk.

look online for anything about ACPI and your model of MacBook, it's probably only a settings problem but there could be support issues also.

expand on this a little more. bootloader, partition setup, etc.

Tip for noobs from a noob:

Once you install Ubuntu - any spin - on your virtual box - in order to allow resolution scaling, shared clip-board etc you have to follow 2 simple steps:
( after multiple attempts this is the method that provides 0 errors and work the best )

First click on DEVICE tab, " install guest device"
close w/e popup shows, and open terminal

write:
cd /media/[username]/VBOX*
then
sudo ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
and restart
sudo reboot

Now open terminal again and write:
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-dkms

let it download when it promts to replace settings say NO - use N.

sudo reboot

Now if you have shared clipboard and other features enable you'll notice everything works well there are 0 errors on screen.

If you don't know what to do with your operating system once you install it, it's a sign that you don't really need that operating system.

So I decided I wanted to install version 15.10 of Xubuntu due to certain reasons. Before, during installations of, say, 14.04, Xubuntu was unable to detect W10 on my computer, so I was forced to partition manually, and I was fine with that.

However, the 15.10 installer WAS able to detect it, and gave me the option of "installing alongside" or whatever. So I decided to be lazy and do that.
I don't know what the fuck it did, but next thing I know grub is broken or some shit, giving me that unknown file system bullshit, preventing me from booting anything whatsoever except my USB drive. I fixed it but it fucking scared the living shit out of my Linux newfag self, and now I'm mad as fuck.

Who do I blame? Is Grub a piece of shit? Or was it Xubuntu's fault? Or could it have possibly been the Windows bootloader's fault?

You have to go trough some fucking complicated, useless steps to make it run decent.

You have to install proprietary driver of nvidia, then alter so many fucking files just to activate v-sync.

uh hi /flt/

I'm trying to compile mGBA on Ubuntu and every time I've tried to compile something I've failed miserably.

I'm following the GitHub page but I really don't understand it.

Under the compiling section it says:

mkdir build
cd build
cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX:PATH=/usr ..
make
sudo make install

>mkdir build
Is this supposed to reference the build I've downloaded? Or is this just the command?

>cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX:PATH=/usr ..
According to the GitHub "This will build and install mGBA into /usr/bin and /usr/lib"

Am I supposed to add the path to /usr/bin and /usr/lib? Or is this just the command as well?

For dependecnies is says I need:
- Qt 5: for the GUI frontend.
- Qt Multimedia or SDL are required for audio.
- SDL: for a more basic frontend and gamepad support in the Qt frontend.
- SDL 2 is recommended, but 1.2 is supported.
- zlib and libpng: for screenshot support and savestate-in-PNG support.
- libedit: for command-line debugger support.
- ffmpeg or libav: for video recording.
- libzip: for loading ROMs stored in zip files.
- ImageMagick: for GIF recording.

How can I check if I already have them on my system? Will installing the tar automatically download them or do I have to download them manually?

Sorry if these are silly questions I'm just really confused.

That will create a directory named build inside your mGBA directory.

That's the whole command. You don't have to tweak it.

Use dpkg -l "package name" to find if you have it installed.

You are in the situation I was few days ago and if you want my honest opinion is pick either lxbe or MATE.

I just love both equally, even tho MATE uses a little more ram and is overall more beautiful - ironically on recent benchmarks it's absolute best at ram usage when booted up - and performance.

Xfce being the worst, just avoid xfce.. it's old and bad compared to other desktop environments.

cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX:PATH=/usr ..

now when I go to enter the make command I need to specify the target

The problem is I don't know which .cmake file I should target because there's a bunch ranging xxxconfig.cmake to xxxcompiler.cmake.

There's a CMakeCCompilerld.c file that's inside the build directory that looks kind of important kind of thinking that may be it. It's inside a folder that has an a.out executable.

Are there any common signs the target should have?

Dude I'm still reading the wmctrl resources, it's very interesting tool - learning its basics... but i'm still far from actually figuring it out.

So i do

wmctrl -l -p

then use the PID with

wmctrl -r PID for the window right?

Can you help me out with a fast tutorial?

Let's say I want to maximize the youtube video and resize it to fit exactly in that spot, I imagine I will have to keybind that function:

And use the dimensions i got from wmctrl - 956 458 and positioning, but how can I do all this?
>>
>>53568481
You don't really need to work with PIDs. You could also wmctrl -r :SELECT: -b toggle, fullscreen or wmctrl -r :ACTIVE: -b toggle, fullscreen.

You can get the current dimensions via wmctrl -Glp.

You can set a dimension via wmctrl -r :SELECT: -e 1,0,0,800,600.

I'm bad at tutorials.

You may also just play the video in mpv, so you just have the video only.

I've installed Ubuntu-MATE on my desktop.

I have some tearing issues and can't get rid of them after trying for 3 hours. Apparently you have to install compton to fix this but I can't get it work. Is there a dumb-proof distro that won't have these kinds of issues out of the box or should I switch back to windows?

I feel like an idiot, I couldn't even get to update my NVidia drivers.

I've been thinking about trying Mint. Am I going to head into the same issues?

Also, how do you know where things install when you use "apt-get"?

It will be the same on any distribution regarding the tearing. I don't know about tearing since Intel(tm)'s GPUs don't have that problem.

By set it up in xorg this anon means learning to edit system files, after spending all that time learn how to configure the driver.. after that spend so much time prospecting the internet for guides.. Just to learn that you had to add a line of text after a config file to enable v-sync.

>Intel(tm)'s GPUs

This confirms what I've been thinking. GNU/Linux is made for laptops isn't it?

I like GNU/Linux for the out of the box aspect, you get all this great software for free without having any bloatware preinstalled. I also like the freedom aspect. The part I dislike is that everything feels unpolished. I google my problem, an answer comes up on the ubuntu forums but parts of the tutorial doesn't work because it's outdated, then I have to google another tutorial in order to continue doing the previous one and so on. I lose great amounts of time just by trying to get basic things to work properly.

I guess if you only use GNU/Linux without a GUI in your thinkpad you won't run into these kinds of problems but it limits what you can do compared to windows. What's the point of having a good graphics card if you can't use it?

And it's not like I'm a complete noob to GNU/Linux either, I've had an introduction class about it but we only used command lines. I've fiddled with it before too.

>if you set it up in xorg right.

I have no idea what this means, I've tried to follow various tutorials for 3 hours and I've had enough.

No it's just that proprietary drivers are not like on windows hit "next" and it automatically configures itself + so much user feedback and huge teams that just focus on optimization.

You can get absolute performance from your video card and have 0 screen tearing and shit, you just need to make sure that the proprietary drivers nvidia provide are absolutely perfectly installed and that you enabled most of its functions such as vsync.

So I just read this .. if you guys mentioned this early I would've started with arch and done a proper job.

>>
>>53569541
Definitely overrated. It is frequently praised and recommended without properly taking backsides into account.

I never gave any indication of whether it is good or bad. In fact, if a bleeding edge, rolling release distribution (with all that entails) is what one wants, then I'd say it's pretty good, with the disclaimer that I do not have any personal experience with it that isn't horribly outdated. In other words, even if that's what you want, take my recommendation with a pinch of salt.

For anyone wondering, if I were to take my personal experience with Arch into account, as well as other old facts that (hopefully) aren't relevant any more, then I'd be a lot more negative towards it.

regular old debian? or debian testing?

anyway, theres no PPA that ubuntu has, that would allow you to easily get stuff thats not in official repos

then its all very painful to setup with very little benefits
ubuntu LTS are very stable releases, ubuntu server is one of the most populars
the idea that debian offers this great stability is rather deprecated, or comes from the fact that you cant get easily the stuff that could break it, so you are using 5 years old packages

>>
>>53569882
I would mostly agree with the other Anon you're talking with, except I do think Debian can have a spot on the desktop if it offers what one wants.

The very old packages of stable is not what the average user would want and can even cause issues (e.g. Firefox add-ons incompatible with older versions). Testing isn't a whole lot better in that regard, given that it's frozen for the better part of a year every now and then.

Then again, I can't speak for how using Sid is like. Not that I'd ever recommend it anyway (unless there's a very specific use case) considering you have to install testing and then dist-upgrade, which is annoying.

Should I go with gpt or mbr ( msdos ) parition table for the virtual disk?

And If I got with gpt, which I want to go with because It's superior - I need to do some extra steps as the virtualbox itself is having legacy bios amirite?

it's a virtual box, you can try both

>>53570361
mbr/bios unless you have a very good reason not to
The only real disadvantage is you can only have 4 primary partitions or 3 + an extended, though the extended can hold as many as you want. And this in itself doesn't really matter except only a primary partition can hold the boot flag.
>>
>>53570387
Well the data integrity is safer with gpt, I think If i install grub on /dev/sda I'm good to go, or maybe make a 2 mb partition to put it on.

btrfs will be the goto in less than 6 months, it's already usable just not being pushed as a default yet. Fedora was thinking about it soon though.
>>
>>53570248
"Old" doesn't mean not working. Indeed, if no third-party stuff that depends on newer version is used, it'll be rock solid since it's still getting fixes. It mainly means less nice, as software generally improves functionally as it's developed.

Someone's gonna be snarky about this, so let me remind that particular someone that the keyword here is "generally".

>btrfs will be the goto in less than 6 months
Nonsense, it will take years to be the "goto".
>>
>>53570522
Come back in 6 months. It's already perfectly fine to use over ext4 in single disk cases, as well as in many raid cases. For the average user though we're talking single disks anyway.
>>
>>53570480

>Ubuntu seems more pleb tier and bloated

Why do you use those terms in serious questions? How can an operating system be "pleb tier"? Also, how can Ubuntu be bloated and Mint not, when Mint is based on Ubuntu, with almost every package from the repository installed by default?

It's like you people only parrot things you saw other people post, without looking things up yourself and verifying the information.
>>
>>53570534
I didn't say it is not perfectly fine but "goto" implies it is tested and trusted enough for servers and desktops, which will take a lot longer than months, even if it were completely ready right now.

So I've researched, in some cases MBR is faster - safe to safe overall faster.

While GPT is MUCH more secure with your data.

So using my own type of logic: Considering I don't have much private data, or the most stuff I use is backed up on internet ( torrents, storage etc ) I shouldn't really care about data loss - I also don't write that much to my drives so the chances of data loss happening is slim.. in 1.5 year since I have the hardware it never happened.

So I'll stick with MBR for now until they either invent new technology which is obviously better.
>>
>>53570789
I'll be honest, I don't know how GPT is secure your data. Do you mean security like from other people or secure as in not losing it accidentally on write? The first is obviously resolved with disk encryption, the second I honestly don't hear of happening.

1. Having 8gb of RAM, should I even create a swap partition?
2. Is ext4 still the best file system for this?
>>
>>53572180
I've been using a laptop with 8GB RAM for the past 4 years and never had a SWAP partition.
Also, you can configure the OS to use a SWAP file on an already existing partition rather than its own partition. Just in case you're really running short of RAM in the future.

EXT4 is definitely the most widely supported file system you could use.
Other options would be btrfs for example, but it won't really matter for your everyday desktop usage.

I was considering that.

BTW I'm kinda intrigued now, about those benchmarks, does it perform better than XFCE? Do you think I should try grabbing 16.04 now instead of waiting?
>>
>>53572912
Some people play some games on Linux, I personally don't but I would still pick up the lowest resources consuming DE that is well polished - which comes down to MATE and LXDE with recent tests showing that mate has lower boot ram usage and LXDE lower overall after usage.

>>53572919
XFCE does something bad to benchmarks - different benchmarks show XFCE being among worst.

I've a very old DE not so well managed lately, at this point gnome 3, kde, lxde, mate have the best results with lxde and mate being top.

I find mate looking optimal.
>>
>>53572919
If you want cutting edge packages install arch then put mate or w/e de you want into it - it'll be more up-to-date than 16.04 - just stick with that learn the basics until 16.04 official release...
Actually you'll have to choose, Fedora 24, ubuntu and many others scheduled big releases in 3 - 4 months.

I would suggest Fedora if you want up-to-date stuff out of the box - but their repo servers suck ass, no matter how much you try it will download slow as fuck - try maybe you'll have better luck .

They're not bloated - they're just meant for different situations - just follow based on what you have in front of your eyes, you will later come back if you have problems and be happy that all that info is there.

You lack the proper discipline to go trough them.

Does anybody know if Terminator supports images? I know you can set an image as background but I mean rendering images as required by ranger/feh/w3m.

Just tried it: It sort of works, but I don't use that feature of ranger enough to know how it's supposed to work at its best.

What do you mean breakdown? It's two command, first lspci and you are filtering that resulting output with grep.
