It would be like my wife wanting to hang out with a Nascar pit crew, talking about her Toyota Camry, and bragging about the last time she pumped her own gas.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>53548991
Yup they are, i dont blame them for being ignorant but the sad part is we cant even argue with them or explain to them why they're wrong because they have no idea what they're even missing out on by using windows and not a linux distro

Even after all these years, "muh games" is still a valid argument. If you enjoy using your computer to play video games, even on an occasional or casual basis, Linux isn't for you.

Not sure what's difficult to understand. GNU/Linux holds no practical superiority to Windows. Maybe OSX, but not Windows.

Accessing something through a file descriptor meets the UNIX/Linux definition of a file. This is the definition in use as we're talking about Linux (not Plan 9).

If the socket file is publicly exposed in the filesystem (filepath), then cp can read it. If it's not, then it can't. This doesn't mean that sockets not publicly exposed can't be read as files, just that cp can't do it.

Seriously, you people just need to fuck off. You're the real cancer of /g/: the people who can't accept the fact that people have good reasons to be using their OSs. We have too many bait threads of people complaining when their shit computer breaks down, and Winkiddies and lincucks are so quick to attack the respective rival operating system. Do you people realize how pathetic you are? Btw, using videogames is a PERFECTLY GOOD REASON to be using Windows. Believe it or not. Wine only works on a small minority of games. There ARE legit reasons to use Windows and there ARE legit reasons to use Linux. I personally love linux, but if I want to play games: fuck that shit, I'm booting into Windows. Also: anyone who believes gaymen are chad normally scum are truely the desperate retards on this board. I can't stress this shit enough; EVERYONE JUST FUCK OFF

Sick and tired of all the freetard deviants shitposting their anime and ricing threads on this board, which is supposed to be about technology. Guess what, like it or not windows is technology made by professionals, linux is not, it's made by amateurs in their free time (pun intended).

Is Windows the greatest OS? No, there is no great OS, there is only a limited choice of OSes, most of which are bad, some of which are usable.

I surely don't want this board to be a place where we discuss memes. And the whole FOSS thing is one huge meme.

I give you that if you're a "hardcore gamer" linux is still not a good choice but for a "casual basis" as you describe i think at this moment linux is more than qualified , there's more and more games everyday even if is just because companies doesn't want to put all their eggs in one basket anymore.

Yeah well many in the academia use all sorts of OSes and devices for research purposes. The most common laptop among students is MBP. Recently, apparently Chromebooks are making inroads in the academia too. This is based on statistics, not what some guy from CERN happens to use, just because he's a physics major or math major and likes to tinker with hobbyist software.

And yeah many companies use linux for different reasons, the most commong being that it costs nothing, and as long as they can hire a neckbeard to automate some shit on it, they don't care it doesn't have photoshop or a developed UI. Most of the staff don't have to work with it, so they just leave it to the neckbeard to deal with it.

If there was another OS that was free, they would use that one and hire anothe neckbeard who knew how to tinker with it.
