Mercurial was never as good as git. They fucked up tags and heads in mercurial, especially compared to the painfully simple git model of tags. Mercurial has been adopting the git model in extensions, but it's still shit.

The more I've used various modern VCSen (git, darcs, mercurial, bazaar), the more I come to the conclusion that the only people who prefer X over git is people who don't really understand use git and want something simpler.
dropbox has version history, you can restore files for up to 30 days. If you want better control, they have an option that lasts for a year

Assets: If you're gamedev or have fucktons of binaries that need versioning, you have to know Perforce. Use git as frontend though.
I like Perforce more than git, personally.
I would say in practice it's git. Most developers know it and it's much better than SVN.
In theory I would say that Darcs is the most interesting.
