Sup /g/

picked this up off a buddy of mine from work for ~500rds of Russian ammo (x39 and x54r).

>Dell Poweredge 2950
still need to confirm specs. pretty sure it has x4 Intel Xeons.

>Dell Ultrasharp 2405FPW 24" monitor

>2x Fujitsu 15K SCSI drives (73GB and 146GB)
no SAS Caddy

>6x Seagate Cheetah 15K drives (3x 146GB, 3x 73GB)
>4x Maxtor Atlas 10K 300GB drives
>1x Seagate Cheetah 10K 300GB drive
with SAS drive caddy

>Windows Server 2003 and 2008 installer discs with multiple license keys

I think I got a pretty great deal. What should I do with it? I haven't even powered it on yet.
>>
>>53546522
Sell it; the power required to run that thing for a year would help pay for something faster and cheaper to run.
>>
>>53546549
there's no way I plan on running this thing for any amount of time. I mainly grabbed it as something like a lab machine, for me to teach myself some Sysadmin stuff on my own.

Haven't spent a good amount of time really working in Server 2k8.
>yes, I know I could launch in a VM

shit, it's not even powering on. Have a light back here but power button doesn't seem to do anything.

You don't need both redundant PSU's to be hooked up at the same time, right? Redundancy isn't my priority right now.

2008 is dead, you should be aiming for 2012 R2 at minimum and 2016 is on the way, the evals are good for 6 months.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-windows-server-2012-r2

To be honest the "A Sysadmin and His Server" style of IT is on the way out, managed service providers have been eating that cake for years.

You should be focusing on how to code massive changes and automate all parts of app/server deployment.
If you starting out put the free edition of Hyper-V or ESXi on it and build VMs on top of that.
You can learn more here

The 2008 stuff still mostly applies to 2012 and newer.

>>53546660
It should start with only a single PSU.
>>
>>53546694
Oh and get powershell in a month of lunches by don jones.
powersell is the bread and butter of MS administration and you'd be pretty dispensable without it, like a nix admin who can't use bash.
>>
>>53546694
I'm finding that out at my own job. Sysadmin team is working on decommissioning our exchange server and moving everything offsite to Office365.

Perhaps I could get installers like you said for HyperV and ESXi or even 2012 R2 to practice with on this machine.
>that is, if I can get it running
>>
Look on the back to the left bottom for a network port. not always there, but sometimes. IF its there it can give you diag indormation as to why its not booting. Called a drac.

also, that server physically supports at most 2 physical cpus
>>
>>53546793
it has two Gigabit LAN ports and 1x Console port.

not sure if it makes a difference, but I dont even hear any drives spinning up. No noise at all.
>>
> Pays for things with ammo
You live in the russian metro by any chance?

>>

Console..... Those servers dont have consoles.
Left to right is drac(if you have it)serial, vga, usb, usb, giglan, giglan. Pop poen the hood and snap a pic i will tell you wati can see. also, to the levt of the power button look for a ciccle with roman numerals. none 2 or 3. Let me know and i will tell you waht you got, but honestly i have no idea the value of that ammo.
>>
I don't think you actually need that for sysadmin experience.

>i'm an Solaris sysadmin and I never had an SPARC computer.
>once i installed x86 solaris, not cool enough
>>
>>53546660
OP if you're still here and haven't got it working yet pull out one of the PSUs a bit a try again, it's what I had to do with mine
>>
>>53547018

Pull the left one, its broken anyways.
>>
>>53547018
Oh and if you can get it running make sure you do the BMC update if it hasn't been done already, quietens the damn thing down a bit after it's settled
>>
>>53546522
Which version of the 2950? I, II, or III?

These are dual socket, but the G3 will take 54xx series dual quad cores, and 8GB FBDIMM's.

The port on the left is what I was referring to. I'm guessing that's the DRAC?

and I didn't see any Roman numerals near the power button. pic coming soon.
>>
>>53547086
That is the drac, should be a 5 and you'll probably want to also check what raid card it has will be a perc6i or perc5 normally unless you stuff a perc h700 in there like I did

Here's the interior rear of the machine. DRAC card to the right and some kind of riser to the left.

OP drives a nissan.

>pretty sure it has x4 Intel Xeons.
No, it accepts up to two Core2-series Xeons.
You can fit a decent amount of ram in these, I had one a couple years ago and stuck 20GB in it. Used it as a hypervisor.

Unplug all but one PSU, the memory, and the hard drives. If you get no beeps you might be out of luck.

It's probably a Gen 1. The 2 and 3 had numerals.

Not much.

But really, if you intend to keep a server you'd be better off with one of the gen 8 HP microservers.

File server
Terminal server
Web server
Testing server
It's a server, it does server shit. I ran a similar system for a while as a game server/RDP server a long time ago.

>>53546549
I don't get why /g/ froths at the mouth at these systems, NetBurst chips were terribly inefficient, but with the exception of late model multi-core Xeon MPs, they'll run you about the same (or maybe a little more) as a modern box in a similar market positioning, and it's maybe what, an extra $10 or $20 a month at most? It's not going to put you in the poorhouse running one of these to tinker with, and honestly I personally find that I get way more out of maintaining, working with and reviving real hardware over dicking around with a couple inconsequential VMs.
>>
>>53546549
The 2950s run about 300w max. Continuous with a price of say $0.15/kwh that comes to $32.85/mo.
>>
>>53547398

but thats the thing, revive the dead hardware, and run the VMs on it.
>>
>>53547769
Yeah, I'm not shitting on VMs at all, I'm just saying having a piece of "real" server hardware dedicated to the job can be a pretty good motivator to explore and learn over just running it on some shitbox thinkpad or your daily driver desktop.
