I currently have an Intel i5 Sandy Bridge 2500k. It runs at ~3.1ghz (although mine is overclocked). Looking at the newer processors, they ALSO run at 3.1-3 ghz. Why would I upgrade? I do not understand, is there some other important spec that I'm missing?

Bragging rights

They have more superbits to power the CPU

Wait for zen

Number of PCI lanes, so basically faster and more peripherals.

Wait, you're telling me that my five year old sandy bridge is nearly as powerful as a modern CPU?
What the fuck?

Wouldn't that be the mobo or are you referring to the virtual lanes on the CPU itself?
How would more lanes = faster unless I'm using multiple graphics cards?

No, GHz is all that matters. GHz and Cores that is.

Intel CPUs still have just four cores, though
What the fuck has improved in five years?

What do you mean what has improved in five years? Everything!
Just look at their numbers, they're bigger than what you're having that means it's ten times better!
>>
OP, you're only realizing just now that the desktop CPU market has stagnated ever since AMD became irrelevant?

There is things like instructions per cycle and power effiency. Intels focus has shifted from raw power to effiecent power, therefore we don't really see much of an improvement over the last years. And to be fair cpu's are fast enough for most people now adays.
