LITERALLY
>>

Define audiophile.
>>
>>53504176
I wouldn't say mental illness, honestly. I think its rather closer to a significant lack of neurons or a purely underdeveloped psyche.
Why blame it on them though? The poor creatures don't deserve to be shitted on for something they just weren't born with.
>>
>>53504242
pretty sure we can assume he's referring to the kind with more money than sense
the ones that go full placebo with $XXX+ cables and have next to no understanding about audio and the limits of human hearing

I don't know what cause that fenomena but its real and even a half deaf can hear it clearly. That is what he was testing in that video. I had same problem on my Audiotechnica headphones and was about to return that shit as i thought they were broken. Btw I'm not an audiophile, i litsen to mp3 and don't give a fuck.

i would be an audiophile if I had money but I'm poor. Ive taken test though and I hear the difference between lossy, lossless, and uncompressed audio in music, and I took the test on laptop built in speakers.

Seeing that shitty manufacturers like Audeze, Grado, and Ultrasone continue to exists, I'd say you're right. Headphone measurements are so readily available these days yet you find audiophiles deluding themselves into buying products that measure so poorly for the price they're selling at.

I'm frankly surprise more people can't but really Bjork was right when she said sound is the nigger of the world.

I'm an audio engineer and have spent hours listening and mixing shit. it's not that fucking hard to hear the difference if you actually have made a habit of listening to shit. There's a fucking reason why professionals use uncompressed file formats of technical shit, not just recording but testing systems and tuning gear.
>>
>>53512001
there is literally no difference between an uncompressed an losslessly compressed version of the same data
during playback, the losslessly compressed file is decompressed into literally the same data as what is in the uncompressed file
>>
>>53512118
I'm not talking about during playback, I'm talking about when you listen during storage
>>
>>53512118
>>53512001
also, the reason uncompressed data is used during production is simply to avoid wasting resources compressing and decompressing the data, it makes more sense just to use a fast disk and read/write the raw data as-is
>>
>>53512134
>when you listen during storage

>>
..b..but OP.. wrapping fiber optics around my monster cables makes everything sound so much better.
>>
>>53511992
>same goes for people who think sacd or dvd audio give any audio quality benefits over plain old red book cd audio
Was DVD audio really meant for higher sound quality though? I thought it was just for more storage and more channels.
>>
>>53512183
more storage and more channels is fine, i'm only referring to people who think they sound better
dvd audio does support higher bit depths and sample rates, but cd audio is high enough already as to cover human hearing capabilities
>>
>>53512218
Hate to agree with audiophile on this one, but human hearing has a dynamic range of 120dB and cd audio only has a dynamic range of 96dB. A difference of 24dB is pretty significant. You might want to re-think that.
>>
>>53512163
The rotational velocidensity of hard drives causes compressed sound files to lose fidelity over time. If you've been listening to the files for as long as I have you start to notice the differences between the way compressed and uncompressed files sound in storage.
>>
>>53512267
http://people.xiph.org/~xiphmont/demo/neil-young.html

>>
>>53512146
>the reason uncompressed data is used during production is simply to avoid wasting resources compressing and decompressing the data,
no it isn't that's complete bullshit.

>>53512163
nah i just fucked up when I listed lossess compression. Been a long day. There might be a difference but I haven't ever taken a test for that, I was just remembering the test I took all wrong and being retarded. There were three options and one version was lower bitrate mp3's next to 320 and wav

I swear I'm not bullshiting. There is a difference, but it's not like anything super huge. Like, you mostly notice it with certain kinds of music or if you are a/bing the two back and forth. It's just kind of more shiny in the only way I can explain it, just a little more detail. Ive had albums before where i listen for a while to an mp3 and then at some other point hear a cd and notice it sounding better. But really it's not that important, just nice to hear the higher resolution stuff of stuff you enjoy. I still walk around with mp3's on my phone and shitty head phones and shit like everyone else and I enjoy it fine.

>>53512218
in a standard studio recording environment they are typically working at at least 48 kz and 24 bits, a CD is 44.1 and 16 bits, and a DVD is 24 bits I think.
>>
>>53512267
What the fuck does dynamic range have to audio quality? Are you listening to recordings of rocket launches followed by someone combing their hair? No? Then fuck off.
>>
>>53512328
studios use higher bitdepths and sample rates to give them more headroom when editing, having more headroom means nothing when simply playing things back unmodified

Sounds legit
>>
>>53512322
That is information is definitely wrong.
20 Log(2^16) = 96.3dB

This definition of the dynamic range of human hearing claims 130dB.
http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/sound/earsens.html

Nobody argues that the dynamic range of human hearing greatly exceeds 100dB.
>>
>>53512368
no, because most of the time you are gonna record stuff at the same level anyway. It's about getting the most information about the sound in there. you have a greater dynamic range certainly at higher rates but it's very rare that that makes much difference when you are recording most instruments cause you are going to record at the same level anyway. It's about the resolution.

>>53512395
I literally took a test. Idk what to tell you man.
>>
>>53512359
I guess if you only listen to stuff like lady gaga, then you probably wouldn't notice the difference.
>>
>>53512328
You realize that not all mp3s are created equal, right? I've had to download different rips of music before because the first ones I got were probably converted from another lossy format. Cymbals sound like shit, audible hissing noises, as well as distortion on guitars becoming MORE distorted. These things are easy to hear on a shitty mp3, but a 320kbps mp3 that was created by someone who knows what he's doing will sound close enough to the original that the differences are moot. And perhaps there are still some differences, but you'd have to be actively listening for them, and at that point you really have to ask yourself what the fuck you're doing. Are you listing to music, or being autistic?
>>
>>53512486
Live orchestra has a dynamic range of 80dB, dipshit. Above that, and it's not music; it's noise. Unless, like I said, you enjoy listening to rocket launches and chainsaws.
>>

I don't disagree with you. Like I said, take it with a grain of salt, I'm someone that strives to hear at a professional level and have spent loads of time listening to shit. It's not like if im walking around at a party or some shit and music is playing im gonna freak out if it's data compressed. I'm just saying, there is a difference and you can hear it. I'm sure if anyone sat down and really focused they could hear it too. It's good to know I think cause sometimes there is music that's special to people and they might get a little bit more if they heard it in the best format.

One of the coolest parts of mixing is when you change something that isn't noticeable to people but it makes the track sound better. It might be like that for people. You might not be able to even say why it sounds better. Idk. I guess I just wanted to share cause I see these threads a lot and whatever.

the problem with that isn't in the reproduction but with the recording. No mic is able to capture how something really sounds in person. This is especially true with things like guitar cabinets, pianos, etc. Changing the position of a mic, even just a few millimeters, can drastically changes the sound.

>>53519607
These blanket statements need to stop as well. It's been proven many times how lossless audio can be transparent regardless of gear. Listening skill is a much larger factor but something like v0 mp3 is practically imperceptible from lossless with the exception of some problem samples. Quality is encoder and bitrate dependent, perception is listening skill with smaller factor being the equipment and the only way to test it is to double blind while removing all other factors which could affect performance(volume match, encode the files yourself from the lossless etc).

That dynamic range is very important for fast-paced music like drum and bass and breakcore. You have high-peaking transients from the snare and kick drums, but then you have a ton of ghost hits in between that take advantage of all that dynamic range, and before you claim that "hurr they're too low to make any difference", it does make a difference.

the low middle-range ATH headphones aren't meant to last long, I'm sure you could tell with this damn awful joints with the earpads.

I don't think you can get ATH-M50's anymore, if you want a replacement, go get the M40X which is apparently superior to the more expensive M50X (only see charts for M50X, don't know the actual chart comparison with M40X).

If you want a headphone that will actually last long, spend a bit more for something like the AKG K702/K7XX (K7XX occasionally goes on Massdrop for $200 every now and then) because of the detachable cable, earpads come off with just a turn, easily-replaceable headbands.

The equivalent would be HD600 and DT880, and they both have flaws with their build quality in comparison to the AKG which may or may not be important to you. HD600 is just awful awful (detachable but cheap cables, plastic snapping/cracking, kitchen counter design). DT880 premium has a headband that you can only replace with a pro model's (and not easily either since the pro is a bit different), and I hear there was something about the pleather just melting or something. Also no detachable cables for DT880.

its $399 for 128GB does come with the iphone6 processor and 5s camera. but its $399, and that kinda hurts my wallet when I could buy a moto g $179 that comes with a better camera but preatty much zero storage, $400 is a lot of money for me im a poorfag, i keep telling myself the touch fits my purposes much better than any phone out there, has a good battery life has a good camera and don't have to worry about having to charge the thing twice or three times a day but it is $400. im constantly on the fence about it. there is no android alternative, the ones that could exist don't get upgraded and have shit sound. pretty much that. im just on the fence, when i have the 400 saved up ill probably buy it.
>>
>>53529671
>moto g $179 that comes with a better camera but preatty much zero storage

The fuck are you smoking man? The Moto G has an SD card slot, unless you're talking about the first gen. But I have to assume you're talking about the third gen because the first and second gen both had completely shit cameras compared to even the iPhone 5.

for as much as /g/ bad mouths apple, outside of 16GB offers, there are very little on the list of android offers.
>>
>>53529846
They're slow yeah, but that shouldn't be a problem for just about anything a Moto G is capable of. I know it hasn't been a problem for me as far as music, movies, pdfs, and anything else I've thrown on it has been concerned. Oh gee, I had to wait 3 minutes instead of 2 for my files to transfer. What a fucking travesty that is.

Even the iPhone's USB2.0 based Lightning connector manages to be faster.

It kills me anon.
>>
>>53529925
>>53529891
well i can see that dudes, it doesn't bother me if the transfers are slow, i barely ever do file transfers. i just want my device to work without having to fuck with it to much, why should i have to manage where what app media files go where this goes where that goes, fuck that i just want it to do what i got the device for. i just went looking online, the zenfone 2 has a 64gb offer for $299, doesn't sound bad, but its huge 6 inches tall.

there just aren't any small phone offerings, the ones that could exist are very costly and offer little to no storage.

i got this friend who i was talking the other day he lives in a bigger city, was telling me everyone is going for 5.5" screens, i mentioned to him that women love phones like that because they can carry them on their purse and not their pocket, mfw he says men are starting to carry "a bag" in order to carry their phone with them, jesus christ these things were supposed to make our lives simpler.

Which is exactly why Android 6 allows the option of merging the SD card and internal storage as a single filesystem.

At least stay up to date on Android if you're going to shittalk it. There are plenty of valid reasons other than that.

>Android 6

literally less than 2.5% of the current android market share , according to gsmarena there are 30 phones on the market today with 5" screen or smaller that will AT SOME POINT IN TIME receive the update for android 6. Moto G 1ST gen received Android 5 mid 2015.

Updates coming in a year after a new version is released is a pretty fucking valid reason. theres a lot android does well, and it works for a lot of reasons, we all know updates aren't one of them, its planned obsolescence at its best, blind following of anything is a cult like behavior, you have to see the good and the bad of a product.
>>
>>53530406
Okay but here's where you fucked up. We got to where we are right now by talking about the Moto G third generation. Which has an SD card slot and is updated to Android 6.

None of those other phones are at all relevant to this discussion. So let me break down exactly why you're wrong now. You said the Moto G had a better but worse storage. I corrected you and said it has microSD. Then you complain that it's not good enough so I point out that Android 6 solves your exact problem. Then you cry that Android 6 is not yet on devices other than the one being discussed.

The Moto G3 has Marshmallow and an SD card slot. It fills your criteria. Stop bitching about irrelevant shit.

>>
>>53530459
> sd card
and like i mentioned before in the post above. i want internal storage. maximum option for moto g is 16gb and it makes the price go to $220 which would make it more expensive than a ipod touch with 16gb internal storage.

But that is literally wrong. As I've just explained, Moto G 2015 has Marshmallow and an SD Card slot. So unless you're super anal about your backups taking an extra 2 minutes, there should be no problem here.

Hmm...~$250 (including cost of 128 GB microSD card) vs $400. Well gee, I'm fucking stumped. Who'd imagine a more expensive, premium product would score better in benchmarks?
>>
>>53530752

that is why its a difficult choice, the difference in price isn't that stark either, even at 64GB the ipod would cost $299.

the main differences are in fact the better camera of the moto g, with less storage built in along with not very good specs.

lower res camera, higher internal storage, larger app and accessory ecosystem, better specs.
>>
>>53530847
Again, the higher internal storage thing is outright wrong when taking into account merged storage in Android 6. Stop being willfully ignorant of that, when it is as described what you want, a single shared filesystem.

Aside from that benchmarks are pretty much meaningless at this point unless you're super intent on playing GTA: San Andreas. Emulation ran fine on my first gen Moto G, and I see no reason it wouldn't be fine on better hardware.

>>

>I haven't even tried listening to and comparing mp3 and flac with my headphones.

Try it, you'd be surprised how low you can go. Make sure you do the encoding yourself and don't use some shitty MP3 CBR file from the internet.

With the modern LAME encoder, MP3 sound surprisingly good at 128kbs variable bitrate (v5).

With Vorbis and Opus you can push it even further.

96kbs Vorbis is fine for a portable media player and with opus you can even use 80kbs.
>>

The funny thing is, no human and a majority of machines cannot tell the difference between the two
>>
>>53511958
>>53534599

It has to do with the mastering. CDs are mastered to be as loud as possible, this is done my compressing the dynamics. Vinyls are usually not as compressed and are more pleasant to listen to because of it. Nothing wrong with digital, it's just the shitty "industry standard" fucking it up.
