What does /g/ think about these two media players?
I've been using mplayer for years now. Should I use mpv instead?
mplayer is old as fuk bro
>>53500682
I use nothing but MPC-HC, it is lightweight as fuck and has so many features that I literally every time.
>>53500682
mplayer is outdated beyond repair, MPV is a step up.
>>53500682
>>53500835
I use MPV just because it's the same across my windows and Linux machines.
Only things I want more for MPV are a potplayer style playlist window IE: some way to track what episode in a series I fell asleep to.
That and I want Kodi to go libmpv so I can use the same configuration files for every media player. Or I can wait for Plex Media Player to be finished but when I last tried it it seemed to get more stutters than regular MPV and it wasn't pulling all my configuration options.
>>53500682
Yeah, mpv is probably what you want. MPlayer was a good choice before mpv came along, but it's broken and weird in a lot of ways that mpv isn't. For example, I think MPlayer still partially relies on an in-tree copy of FFmpeg and libass.
For a fairly detailed list of what's different between the two, see:
https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/blob/master/DOCS/mplayer-changes.rst
If you have old hardware or you need a feature that mpv removed, you should use MPlayer.

>some way to track what episode in a series I fell asleep to
How does that work?
>>53500682
Use Bomi, mpv by itself is a joke, it doesn't even have a gui.
>>53500682
is that some good ol' the good, the bad and the ugly?
>>53500905
>some way to track what episode in a series I fell asleep to
couldn't someone make a script for that from the watch later files?
SMplayer + mpv seems to work surprisingly well now
>>53502646
Bomi development will continue, that's awesome!

>gui
why?
>>53503300
not everyone is a c00l h4x0r like you anon, some of us need basic features.
>>53503420
>basic features.
tell me two basic features not adressed by the osc
why is it so hard to set up a fucking config file in mpv?
why aren't the fucking docs relevant, why do they recommend switches instead of a fucking config file? what cunt uses switches?
>>53504226
>make a text file called mpv.conf in ~/.config/mpv
>put shit in there
I don't understand your problem
>>53504269
That's exactly what I'm doingvo=opengl-hq
hwdec=vdpau
osc
osd-layout=bottombar
I think the actual options might be fucked but there's such flaky documentation out there that I wouldn't be surprised
>>53504339
>>53504269
It was actually
script-opts=osc-layout=bottombar
Is there a way to determine if video is actually being GPU-accelerated?

Crap, all this time and I never realized. I have the official Nvidia drivers on an oldish card, so is there any reason why it wouldn't just work?
I do have Compton installed (XFCE tears like shit) so could that be why? I didn't think the two things could conflict but that could be why I guess.
>>53504899
Wait, am I getting confused, or where it says
"Using software decoding"
Is it referring to the audio?
>>53504986
>Is it referring to the audio?
no
>>53504986
So I was right the first time and it wasn't using the hardware
But I tried it on a 720p video and it seems to be using the GPU now
I guess there's a reason why it works on some videos but not others, but I never really paid attention to this in the pastPlaying: r2w_h720p.mov

i dont know what mplayer is so no opinion
but mpv works for all my uses.
Have you guys tried Fluid Motion from AMD's cataclyst?
I'm using this to enable the Fluid Motion for 60fps. Seems to look just fine as a fluid 60fps video with MPC-HC.

tick boxes for on/off items
drop down menus for multiple options.

how up your own ass are you that you even need to ask that

Which items or options?

It depends on resolution of the file.

all or at least the most common settings.
usual gui stuff for playlists, looping, repeating, files etc.

Work in progress.
Make an issue if you want something concrete added.
>>53506376
Don't need a gui to do any of that. It's just too keys to remember, L for loop and p for playlist.
L is bound to loop by default.
And I select multiple files in my file manager and hit enter to make a playlist (not sure if this works on windows, I don't use it), and you can shift+drag and drop files or youtube links to add them to the playlist.
To view the playlist I added this to input.conf and press p to activatep show_text "${osd-ass-cc/0}{\\fs8}${osd-ass-cc/1}${playlist}"
I think p should display the playlist by default and I don't think there is currently a default keybind to do this? It seems pointless having space and p be pause to me.
