Solve an argument /g/entlemen: cpu or motherboard first? Is it acceptable to pick the motherboard before you pick the cpu?
>>
>>53453433
CPU you fucking dipshit. Then you search for a motherboard with the right chipset.
Why would ANYONE pick the less expensive part first, instead of the one that dominates the build.

Have you ever heard someone say:
>I have this PC centered around my ASUS Formula V
No? Thought so. Because its fucking stupid.
>>
>>53453507
*chipset and socket
>>
>>53453433
>>53453507

It doesn't matter. If you know what you need, most of the decisions will be made for you.
>>
>>53453433
NO
>>
>>53453433
heres your reply
>>
Board matters very little outside of chipset and socket / features. Unless you're doing a themed build, you always CPU first.
>>
>>53453589
>if you know what you need
If the OP was implying that he knew what he needed beforehand his question wouldnt make any sense.
Im pretty sure we are talking about a from scratch build with no parts picked yet.

Or would you say building a PC like this is acceptable?
>I really really like this ASUS motherboard
>let me pick a CPU
>Oh, I can only use 1. gen Intel CPUs on this board.
>well nvm, I guess because I NEED this motherboard I have to buy an old CPU
No. Just no.
>>
>>53453507
Just for the sake of being contrary, I'll chip in.
If I want a board with 20 sata ports or 8 PCI-E slots, then the mobo is first, cpu is later.
But fuck all people are gonna do this.
>>
>>53453507
This. You pick a motherboard that suits the needs of the rest of your build, not the other way around.
>>
>>53453662
Nice to see people think outside of gaymen on /g/
>>
>>53453642
Does he need OC?
Does he need hyperthreading?
Does he need more than 4 cores?
Does he need super high memory bandwidth?
Does he need a ridiculous amount of RAM?
Does he need 2x SLI or higher?
PCI support?
PS/2 port, serial?
Most importantly, what is the budget?

If you know those things, most of the decisions will be made for you and some of them will lead to "motherboard first" decisions.
>>
>>53453682
>You pick a motherboard that suits the needs
See
>>53453662
>>
>>53453662
Not really contrary at all. It's just the first reply was some asspained autist trying to make it seem like picking a motherboard first is always a "fucking stupid" idea.
>>
>>53453662
In other words, prioritize whatever matters most to your particular needs. For ordinary people who want a desktop computer, that's the CPU. For servers and autists with dozens of hard drives, having more SATA ports might be more important. But if that was the case for OP then I don't think he'd be asking this
>>
>>53453662
if you need 20 sata ports you should be using SAS or a raid card you idiot
>>
>>53453662
>implying there is no motherboard that suits your definition for almost every generation of modern CPUs
And this is where your logic totally falls apart.
>>
>>53453762
>>53453682
>>53453720

Yes, you pick one that suits your needs, AFTER picking your CPU.
If you want Haswell because of muh price/performance or bleeding edge instead you can always find a motherboard that has X SATA ports or X PCIe Ports you fools.
And if not, add some fucking raid or SAS Cards. Need dual NIC? Add a fucking Network card.

Just because an old motherboard has the 20 SATA ports that you need it does NOT justify buying a shitty CPU that fits it.

Again:
>Omg, that mobo has 4 PCIe lanes for my 4 GPUs
>LGA 775? Well, I guess Ill go with it.
Retard logic considering that new motherboards offer the same or more in almost every case.

Get it now, you braindead idiots?
>>
>>53454097
What do you think the 8 PCI-E slots are for?
>>53454561
Sadly there isn't, especially when there's more than one factor you're buying for.
I used the PCI-e slots as an example for a semi exotic use case, there are far more specialised requirements around.
>>53454648
>AFTER picking your CPU
What if I just want to build a SAN with as many drives possible, or with $ per drive being important, where I could't give a fuck if the thing was running of an Intel Atom or AMD Geodude?
Why is it so important to you that I pick a CPU first?
>And if not, add some fucking raid or SAS Cards
Where? A system with 6 PCI-e slots maxes out at 48 drives, or 96 if you're happy to spend far more per drive on a fuckexpensive sas card.
>Omg, that mobo has 4 PCIe lanes for my 4 GPUs
>LGA 775? Well, I guess Ill go with it.
>Get it now, you braindead idiots?
Yes. I get that you think the only reason anyone wants more than two PCI-e slots is for gayming.
Because 10GB fibre cards run off fucking USB.
>>
>>53454648
>being this bad at reading comprehension
Wew lad
>>
>>53454648
You need to define your needs first, retard. That determines whether you would pick a CPU or motherboard first.

You want to setup a FreeNAS system? That means ECC which means you'll start off with motherboard selection.
