Lossless doesn't necessarily mean the best quality. There are sounds on every recording that are outside of the hearing range of human beings. If you removed those sounds from an audio file, it's no longer "lossless," but the quality hasn't been diminished. Likewise, applying compression methods may not change the sound on an audio file in any perceptible way.

Go ahead and test your own ears. You'll be lucky to get past 19 000khz. For me, I can't hear past 17 700. Now, my opinion is that those frequencies probably don't matter, because I doubt there's any utility in music for frequencies over 6 000khz.
