monitors are fine for casual listening if it's just you at your computer. monitors just won't spread the sound to a room of people that well.
the other issue with monitors for casual listening is that most producers don't care how their final product sounds on studio monitors, because most listeners don't have them.
they're more worried about having the music sound good coming out of earbuds or some macbook speakers because that's what the average listener has.
