What is your GPU history and your thoughts for the future of GPUs /g/?

I think both nVidia and AMD nailed it this gen, the 970 issues notwithstanding nVidia definately won the final DX11 war but due to optimisations to do that the current batch of nVidia products are ill equipped for DX12 and Vulkan where AMD is currently shining - it's interesting to see the different approaches play out.

nVidia's gambit paid off the best financially though and while AMD is currently riding high, nVidia has shitloads of R&D capital and a new generation of products designed around compute again coming very soon - Pascal vs. Polaris is gonna be a bloodbath for both sides and that's fucking awesome for us.

6600gt -> 8600gt -> 4870 -> 6950 -> 970

AMD is fucked unless they fix the CPU overhead issue and stop this rebranding nonsense, i'll gladly take 3.5gb over buying a 3 year old GPU that shit outs more heat than a nuclear reactor.
>>
>>53441133
nVidia has done its own fair share of rebranding (G80 family was used from 8000 series through 400 series...)

CPU overhead is fixed with DX12 as evidenced by the recent DX12 titles.
But DX11 will forever be broken and while that might not seem like an issue now, in 8 years time when we're all using 8K monitors/VR headsets, AMD's dx11 support will still be limited to a single core so playing todays nice DX11 games at ultra high res will be a shitshow on AMD, where nVidia will play it just fine.

>nVidia has done its own fair share of rebranding (G80 family was used from 8000 series through 400 series...)

nvidia didn't raise the prices of the cards when they pulled that shit though, the 290x went from $300 to $500 just because they put a new sticker on the damn thing.

>CPU overhead is fixed with DX12 as evidenced by the recent DX12 titles.

it's not fixed, the responsibility is just pushed onto the devs. we're almost certainly going to see a flood of shitty games using DX12 and vulkan as marketing statements before things improve.

Seriously? Answer the question pls can I sli a 970 with a ps4? Or do I need to crossfire because the ps4 uses a custom AMD apu? But doesn't multi-gpu in dx12 work regardless of manufacturer?
>>
>>53446496
You need a R9 at least to Crossfire a PS4, Nvidia won't work. Yes, DX12 SLI/Crossfire hybrid will work in the future with a release of DX12.
>>
>>53446618
>>53446496
Also, you need a free HDMI port on your gfx card to connect to PS4.

I guess I'll wait then, and use crossfire when I get a Polaris gpu.

Uhhh... hmmm. Where to start? I think I started with a Hercules or CGA adapter. Then to a Trident 2MB VLB adapter, then I think a S3 something.

In a dual P3 1GHz system, I ran an ATI 9800XTX and a Radeon 7500PCI + 2 VooDoo2's. Mostly because I owned them already, and wanted to play Unreal with Glide.

There was also some SGI and HP Visualize GPU's in there as well. Fun times.

i'm switching to AMD with my next upgrade mostly out of principle. i was a die hard nvidia drone that defended gameworks but when i look back at my experiences with gameworks i can't think of a single positive thing.
i don't want blurry fucking shadows, i don't need x64 tessellated hair, i don't want to be sold on gimmicks anymore. i wont care if polaris 11/12 performs 5% slower than 1080 TI's, it's time to support the company that needs it and that isn't fucking over their customers.

Honestly, having had that GTX 470 manages to make me laugh whenever people talk about AMD housefire and AMD poor drivers. I changed that 470 because plugging 2 monitors made my GPU go berserk on frequencies and I changed my 7970 because I killed it when changing the heatsink.

I hardly remember the old ones.
My laptop has a 320M and my workstation has a Quadro 6000 and Tesla C2075.
I don't really bother to put a GPU in anything else.

To my defense I boughtthis card before the 3.5 GB was discovered or widely publicised.

Im hopeful for Pascal and Polaris. I want to already upgrade to 980Ti but I think Ill waitfor next gen GPUs.

ATI 9800 Pro - new - AGP - in storage (replaced)
ATI 5970 - new - PCIe - died from water spill
AMD Radeon 7970 - new - PICe - died from water spill (again!)
AMD Radeon 7970 - used - PCIe - in operation

All since the 5970 are water-cooled and running almost 24/7 (except during vacation) crunching numbers. I go with AMD mainly for DP compute power.
