Does the choice of DE affect battery life for laptops?
Is it a significant difference?

Just installed Fedora on my laptop and wish to maximise battery life.
>>
Just installed powertop and tlp, what else can I do?
>>
Bump?

Any window manager with compositing will put an extra strain on your battery, but if your battery isn't shit you should be alright. Currently running Xubuntu with KWin on my laptop with no issues; gnome 3 may be a bit more of a workload, though. Powertop is definitely good to look at if you're trying to figure out what's eating power.

I was thinking that so I replaced gnome with enlightenment and disabled compositing. It's currently about 10 degrees c cooler than it was with windows 7, which is really nice.
>>53387143
How is that different from tlp and powertop?
>>
Wow.

Shitty anime threads are more popular than Linux threads.

>Does the choice of DE affect battery life for laptops?
Yes. All these useless graphical effects require computations, you dip.

>Is it a significant difference?
>is 10 km a long distance?
Depends if you have to walk 10km in the desert or if you are looking for a second hand car.

If you keep a high cpu usage all the time then your DE's consumption would be negligible.
If you just type text in vim and browsing 4chan in a non bloated browser, then it's another story.

Next time, use your brain before opening a thread or go to >>>/sqt/

That's not very nice.
Anyways I settled on MATE and it's pretty smooth. Losing about 5% more per hour than I was on windows though.

my laptop has an amd and an Intel gpu. I'm trying to turn the amd one off because it's not using it.
It's one of those vaios with a manual gpu switch.

All open source drivers.
>>
>>53391566
>All open source drivers.
found your problem, AMD open sores drivers are absolutely terrible.
>>
>>53391566
The proprietary drivers might help the battery last longer if you can put up with it possibly behaving in retarded ways with some compositors (minor graphical glitches, major tearing)
>>
>>53391605
but it's not even using the amd card.

>>53391613
I understand that, but I would just be happier with Intel only graphics. It's fast enough for anything I need and will be more efficient
>>
>>53391646
wait so you bought a laptop with a dedicated card and you are switching it off? Why didn't you get a laptop without one and save like $200?
>>
>>53386756
fedora does not have those installed out of the bawks?
hawhaw

>>53391664
i paid 250 for this though.
It's a sandy i7 with a hd 6630m and 4 SSDs. Amazing win in an auction on eBay. Also 8gb ram and 1600x900 screen. It even came with the battery dock and original charger.
Bear in mind it's australian dollars, so it's less than 200 usd.

>>53391701
No and neither does Ubuntu

Yeah it's one of those silly laptops that comes with built in raid 0.

Sony vaio vpcsa28gg.
>>
>>53392042
>it actually has 4 SSDs
I thought you were reading the specifications wrong or something. How's the performance?
>>
>>53392059
eh in windows 7 i was getting about 500 write and 650 read in the ssd benchmark.

They're old sata 2 SSDs though, when I broke the array it was about 180r/140w per disk.
>>
On my x230 with mate, tlp and gentoo powertop reports 9-10W and I think it's too much :( maybe fault in some kernel flags. Any advice?
>>
>>53392663
Turn off wifi and it'll drop in half.
>>
>>53392663
Op here. Powertop is reporting 11.7
Seems a little high with wifi and Bluetooth off
>>
>>53393179
what other applications are you using? do you have the teamviewer botnet installed for some reason?
