Please make a compelling argument for me why a mouse and keyboard are not the supreme method of interaction with a computer, and how voice recognition and touch-screens are not merely meme technologies being pushed on consumers as a false evolution in order to sell a "new" product?

voice recognition
>slow
>clumsy
>difficult to navigate menus
>audible and understandable to eavesdroppers and the public

keyboard
>fast, faster than speech
>perfectly accurate
>navigate menus with perfect accuracy and high speed
>fairly quiet, sound is meaningless to others

touch-screen
>slow compared to mouse speed
>inaccurate
>requires moving your hands and fingers around like a fool

mouse
>extremely fast, feels like you're controlling it with your mind
>extremely accurate, down to individual pixels
>very small movements of hand allow huge range of input, scroll wheel and buttons allow even greater flexibility

I just can't see any a favorable argument for the touch screens other than in the scenario of a phone or a tablet for very light tasks. If you're going to be spending any considerable time or doing anything serious with your computer you will be using a mouse+kb.

>keyboard
>>fast, faster than speech

ok this is just incorrect
>>
>>53335604
It's not that voice recognition is bad or useless, but you get tired faster of speaking to a computer than of typing on a keyboard. I could go for hours typing, but not talking.
And a pointing device like a mouse is very acurate and gets the job done fast. If you have a mouse with decent DPI you can be faster on your input than with your hand on a touch device.
>>
>>53335630
yeah, let me see you speak 120 wpm into your phone and see how intelligible the result comes out.
>>
>>53335692
What? Humans often talk about 200 wpm
>>
>>53335766
how do you dictate it into a computer?
>>
>>53335604
You are 12 and don't know anything about most everything.
>>
>>53335630
>>53335766
Stenographers have a minimum of 240 wpm, but they type in shorthand on specialized keyboards.
>>
>>53335604
Touch screens, though inaccurate, are actually a good deal faster than a mouse.
>>
>>53335796
You can still talk faster than that, not to say that typing isn't up there potentially too.
>>
>>53335817
Talking any faster than that is generally unintelligible.

The worlds fastest speaker is faster than the world's fasted stenographer, but he requires a panel of experts to slow his speech down and examine it word by word to verify that he's enunciating clearly.
>>
Since nobody bothered responding in earnest yet:

When I'm fapping I don't want to be hassled with the keyboard or mouse if I need to change the porn
>>
>>53335803
I can accurately flick a mouse cursor from one side of a 27" screen to another in 1/10th of a second. And then I can send it back to the other side 100 times over I can't see anyone that with their hand without massive errors, looking like a retard, or getting tired.
>>
>>53335803
>>53335604
On a laptop, at least, a touchscreen is better than a trackpad at least 99% of the time.

So much so that when I use other people's laptops, I sometimes poke the screen like a retard trying to click links and stuff.
>>
>>53335766
Eminem's 'Rap God' averages 260 WPM. But this is not how most people talk
>>
>>53335766
And that will come out as a garbled mess if you trying using voice recognition with it.
>>
>>53335766
I can repeatedly hit 100 wpm with no errors when typing. When you take into account the amount of time it takes to correct errors when composing messages using voice only you're probably looking at something like 30 wpm or worse.

Speaking to other people != using your voice to control a computer or compose messages
>>
>>53336191
>>53336171
A keyboard requires you to be
1) At a particular loction
2) Stationary
3) Have at least one hand free, or both hands for decent typing speed

Are you telling me that when you're in the kitchen preparing dinner you wouldn't want to be able to work a computer with your voice? What about when you're working on something else messy (greasy machine parts, paint, caulking, etc). There's a lot of benefit to voice recognition. Not everyone is a manchild.
>>
>>53335604
>taking the time to write all this shit out

In other news, water is wet.
>>
>>53336143
If doing things that quickly is so important to you, then use both hands and you'll be faster than any mouse.
>>
>>53336171
Then your complaint is with the current state of voice recognition technology, not the technology itself.

>anon has never watched star trek

I know part of it is a crazy advanced A.I. but still, the way they can work through problems is just so much more appealing than kb/mouse

you can probably do that cause your a loser who sits in a chair all day, but actual people might be more comfortable with a touch screen.
>>
>>53336261
Those are some convenient scenarios, but they are not the ultimate form of interaction the OP has described.

>Not everyone is a manchild.

Right up there with calling someone a redditor as one of the easiest ways to throw your own post under the bus.

I try to minimize mouse movement as much as possible. Alt+D (highlight address bar in browsers) is a good one.
>>
>>53336605
Ya know, some people make their living in front of a computer.

Yet just touching a spot at the screen is faster if your hand is even remotely close to the screen. Amazing, right? With a mouse you often overshoot or undershoot a bit, and having to correct will definitely make you slower than touching

Didn't relalize this, always used F6, nice.

ctrl-l, scrubs

Ctrl is for program shortcuts, alt is for OS and menu bars

>voice recognition
why is this still so shit?
>>
>>53335604
google's voice recognition on android is fucking flawless for short blips that i would type into google. It is great at google searches. However, for anything else it would be very shit.
>>
>>53336161
Eminem isn't a fast rapper at all. I could hit 400 wpm when I did policy debate.
>>
>>53338155
omg youre so cool now fuck off
>>
>>53337275
This. I hate when programs fuck with this simple concept of modifier keys
>>
>>53335630
I'd wager that for numbers in particular it is faster, not to mention inputs without simple pronunciation.
>>
>>53336151
That's because 99% of trackpads are shit.

The one on the MacBook pro is pretty nice (actually comparable to a mouse's scroll wheel when it comes to scrolling, which is impressive) and while not a trackPAD the trackpoint is pretty nice too.

Honestly that is all drivers. It can make or break a trackpad. My Asus laptop had a terrible trackpad until I replaced the drivers with something from Acer for the same hardware.

I bought a Yoga 2 Pro recently, and at first I thought the touchscreen was just a gimmick, but I find myself using it more than the touchpad.
