What is the most polished, good looking, solid all around DESKTOP distro of 2016 so far?

I have to install it on a new desktop system and I can't choose... from the screenshots, I don't like Linux Mint Cinnamon, I don't know why

Any recommendations?

What's the best Linux Desktop has to offer in 2016 so far?

inb4 install gentoo

Linux Mint, faggot.

Xfce that comes with Xubuntu (they're making it prettier) is BY FAR best, good looking DE.

Why use Linux for desktop in 2016 ?

"Linux Desktop" was just a meme

Windows 10 is pretty much perfection

Why would you even want anything else?

Second best is OS X

Linux is for servers OP

Lubuntu
>>

Lubuntu is best for low end systems but if you have a powerful desktop there's no reason to pick Lubuntu over Xubuntu

Why would you use windows on 2016? "Windows 10" is just a meme

OS X is preety much perfection

Why would you even want anything else?

Second best is Gentoo

Windows is for eldery people anon.
>>
>>53327440
If Windows is for elderly people, why is it the standard corporate / enterprise OS ?
>>
>>53327048

Fedora.

because corporations are run by old people

what?

That depends on what corporation you're talking about, if you mean corporations where older people work then yes, if you mean newer, more hip corporations, then the standard isn't windows, get on with the times grandpa.

>>
>>53327193
Panjeet, you failed. I am sorry to inform you that 3 rupees have NOT been transferred into your account due to the following offensive phrases

""Linux Desktop" was just a meme"
The Linux Desktop IS a meme and we would appreciate it if you could refrain from using any past tense phrases in this regard.

"Second best is OS X"
At Microsoft, we believe only Windows 8.1 is second best to Windows 10 and that this is only due to the release of Windows 10.

"Linux is for servers OP"
Windows Server 2012 offers small, medium and large business with all they need. Their needs are always met at an affordable price bracket. Suggesting any other Operating System is unethical and irresponsible business behaviour towards our loyal customers.

Thanks Panjeet Majumdar, come again

Any distro you want to use + 20 minutes of googling you can make it look whatever way you want.
>>
>>53328332
Well, you could use e.g. CTWM (or any other WM for that matter) on Solaris pretty easily.
>>
>>53327558

As a millennial that works in IT, pretty fucking wrong. Artists/developers that prefer Mac usually are issued Macs that are pretty much personal laptops and not tied in with infrastructure. Outside of that maybe the company has a couple linux servers running the website, but a vast majority of anything and everything is windows. Pretty common in brand new start ups as well.
>>
>>53328623
poor guy, sounds like you signed up at a pleb tier, hippy web development company.

I bet your companies recent deployments are all 100% wordpress based with no coding but 100+ plugins to make the page.

Linux is probably common in silicon valley but in the engineering firm I work at everything is windows 7 simply because the proprietary software we need to run doesn't work on linux.

>most polished, good looking, solid desktop distro

Obviously Ubuntu LTS.

That said, it's unclear if you're looking for something actually released in 2016...
>>
1. Define "desktop". All linux systems, with or without GNU, support IBM PCs often used a "desktops".
2. They all look like shit, and if you think that screenshot looks good, sorry, you have shit taste. Linux is the god of bad looking operating systems without any visual polish.

You have not one, but five different UI toolkits in use (gtk2, gtk3, qt4, qt5, xt). Unlike windows and OS X which stick with one and don't break all backwards compatibility overnight because they want a new "hurr durr paradigm", linux is STILL home to the GUI wars.

And the great majority of supposedly coherent UI bundles are really badly made. Buggy, yes. Poorly designed, yes. The programmers are not their target demographic. The programmers are also too autistic to actually understand their target demographic. The programmers are also unpaid and don't have anything to lose by fucking up.

Have you ever wondered why every experience linux user who actually uses more programs than firefox and a terminal has some riced out, cobbled together shit instead of a DE?

Try antergos cinnamon or gnome 3

You can make xfce look nice too.
>>
>>53329079
You do if you've been using those long enough to realize the woeful inadequacy of emulating old hardware and the failed UNIX "software tools" approach right down to its limitations.

I can't remember the last time I actually used sh instead of perl or python, let alone a coreutil like grep or ls.

I have worked at several different large corporations as well as done some part-time work at start-ups.

>>53328738

This guy brings about a really good point. His company uses some CAD software that only runs on Windows, they can't use another type of CAD software on a linux distro because then the other company they work with won't be able to use it because of formatting issues. Then that company can't do stuff, and blah blah blah... Corporate world is stuck with windows whether you want to admit it or not.
