>you don't need more math than high school algebra for programming
How do I immediately know this guy is some webdev or enteprise java monkey?
>>
>>53316297
Ask him some simple questions like writing a transformation matrix or applying Bayes' rule. Every "self-taught" person I've ever met couldn't do either or these simple tasks.
>>
No one cares about academical bullshit like big oh
>>
>>53316326
There's self-taught and "self-taught"

A guy who reads SICP in his spare time will be better than a guy who gets his CS degree doing the minimum possible.
>>
>>53317879

Yeah, which is exactly why major companies like Google, Facebook, Microsoft, etc all ask you to analyze the time and/or space complexity of any code you write in interviews using big-O...

>my job needed math so all jobs needed math
The life of a machine learning specialist, which is borderline none considering most of the hard math is taken care of already and it's not even hard stuff.
>>
>>53316297
Well, what position are you hiring for?

It's better to ask them open ended analytical questions, like why are man hole covers round
Or how many cows are there in North America
Or how much string would it take to spell the alphabet
>>
>>53317905
Obviously, but that's literally exactly the same as saying that a guy who does calculus in his spare time will do better on a math test than an engineer taking it because they have to.

In both cases the former are people who are better suited to the task because they like it.
>>
>>53319508
>Or how many cows are there in North America
>Or how much string would it take to spell the alphabet
wat
>>
>>53319508
>Or how much string would it take to spell the alphabet
1. Take a propelling pencil
2. Measure it's core
3. Write down the alphabet (several times for more precision)
4. Measure the core again
5. Write a straight line until you waste the same amount of lead as you did on previous steps
6. Measure the line
7. Drop the mic
>>
>>53319846
It's the process of finding out rather than the actual facts.

First ask yourself why cows are domesticated. Then how much is needed for one person and then scale it up.
>>
>>53320218
Write few alphabets @ random 3-5 sample. Measure their length. Average it and multiply by 26 and you get a good estimate
>>
>>53320257
you could also make a good use of a sewing kit
>>
>>53320238

eg make a bunch of semi-unfounded assumptions and come up with a dumb ass answer that's hugely off instead of just googling it

It's not about the knowledge. It's just a test of competency.
>>
>>53320450
Thats not the what the question is asking. It's asking how do you find a way to get that number. Google can give you the common answer but if you can't verify it, it's a meaningless number.

You won't be able to use Google to write your custom program, this is the point of the question. To find out if the person you want to hire knows how to fish rather than stealing or buying a fish.

It's a stupid way to come up with approximations to stupid questions. Basically you estimate several numbers and multiply them. I know what you're thinking, and you're right:

You probably memorized, but never understood.

>You probably memorized, but never understood.

Well desu I never used these concepts while programming, only while doing a few exercises on a sheet of paper.
>>
I've been working for fucking banks for 3 years and I've never needed to do a single mathematical algorithm or matrix multiplication or really anything I didn't learn after grade 7. Fuckers butthurt because >muh collage education and never needing the useless shit they taught you.

The point of teaching you all that bullshit math is to to teach you to think logically.

Thats the gist of it. But people don't get it either due to bad education system or people are just retarded or a combination.
>>
>>53318946
Yes because you need to know advanced Math to understand Big O notation

y u mad though I am making mad dough and recruiters who got one of my phone numbers god knows how call me at least once a week to desperately offer me a job to fix yet another completely broken Java EE or Spring application.
>>
>>53325080
This is real life.
Unless you have a research job, most (and by that I mean 99%) of the development jobs are mindless and boring, and barely require any kind of logic, let alone mathematics.

That said, I'm glad I realized early that coding was a shit dead-end for a career. Unless you're actually extremely good, there's no bigger future that getting to boss around some currynigger at the other side of the world who barely speak english and perform worse than a "I don't give much of a shit about programming but a job's a job" graduate despite years of experience.

Or even worse future like being software configuration manager.
>>
>>53324991
Every interesting job will have you use maths. Everything else is just craftsmanship.
>>
>>53316326
actually i've been teached how to do matrix operations and still hadn't finished highschool, lmao
>>
plotting root-mean-square and getting the function to plot the curve _is_ h.s. algebra, OP
>>
Why remember stuff you can look up in 2 seconds. And if you actually need some math that isnt in the standard libraries you will write your own library the second time you need it.
>>
>>53316297
You just need to transform this data by I(x^2+y^2 < 1) which is basic algebra
>>
>>53316297
>>53316326
g8b8m8 but let me tell you something that you don't know yet: after you finish your meme degree and start working in the industry you will most likely forget all your statistics/calculus/algebra classes in just a couple of years (and years pass pretty fast when you get older). At the end your only resources will be a shitty library, a poorly written Wikipedia article, or some incomplete answer in StackExchange.

The only thing I really learnt in university is how to not get sacred of a huge paper full of weird formulas. It was a pretty expensive thing to learn though...
