What does /g/ think of Discord?

I'm getting the suspicion that they sell your data - they don't make it blatantly obvious that you can buy or purchase anything, I even had a difficult time locating something that I could purchase. There aren't any ads either, so I can only assume that their source of revenue is selling data.
>>
>>53278926

What do you do in there,, seriously
>>
>>53278946
It's voice chat, like TeamSpeak or $kype.
>>
>>53278926
Well on its way to becoming the new Xfire. I think their business plan is to get popular then sell out to someone else who will then ruin the platform with ads everywhere.

In short I don't like it but that doesn't stop many of my friends moving to it because Valve is too busy making useless operating systems instead of improving their chat and voice.
>>
its proprietary and when asked promptly to make it free they responded with "we never plan on doing that" which definetly means they sell your data and are good at it, use a free alternative with encryption like RetroShare, Ekiga or Jitsi

Or like >>53279133 mentioned they probably want to keep it closed so they can sell it. Either way yeah, better off using something else.
>>
It's a good idea that is highly vulnerable to data sniffing as it is all websockets and those are very insecure.

TL;DR don't use discord if you are a terrorist.
>>
>>53278960

What information are you hiding
>>
>>53278926

I hate how it looks and functions
I hate how it loads older conversation so scrolling up is ALMOST as bad as in facebooks shit chat
It doesnt support embedded webms
and sending a file through it is abysmally slow

Which is a shame because I would've liked to get my group of friends to fuck off of facebook chatting and on something like this

He doesn't want people to hear his mom crying because he exists.

Also you can setup global hotkeys for mute/unmute.
Discord has echo/noise cancel and volume balance.

Discord was the more efficient service before they got quality options.

Since then it's untouchable, you'd have to be fucking retarded to use skype over it.

>>

And you can't post it without it being pruned :^)
>>
>>53278926
Seems kinda redundant. I mean, it's not especially better than Skype. It uses the same amount or resources and it's proprietary. Might as well just stick with Skype since everyone has it already if you aren't to bothered about the botnet.
>>
>>53280010
>It's not especially better than Skype. It uses the same amount or resources

You what? It has a considerably smaller footprint and is vastly more bandwidth efficient, skype is basically the LEAST efficient voip client available.

Skype is fucking awful.
>>
>>53278926
They've explained this before, the guy that owns it is a well known start up manager who got a shitton of funding early on. They're trying to build a user base before they start selling things, and they're planning to sell stuff like skins and sound packs and the like. Since it's targeted at gaymers they'll eat that shit up since they are used to being butt fucked by micro transactions.
>>
>>53280030
Well. I should have said, "uses slightly more ram than skype".

It's open source, people make modified clients.
It uses 4 times less memory at full usage on 10+ servers.
Skype: Constant 270mb
Discord: 30-60mb
>Might as well just stick with Skype since everyone has it already if you aren't to bothered about the botnet.
For what reason? So it can use a quarter gigabyte of ram and a constant 200kb/s in the background?

Nice meme, friend.

>>

It's not a "web app", there's a desktop client, jew.
>>
>>53280129
The desktop client is literally a webapp in a nice wrapper though.

So you can actually talk with people instead of just going "are you on discord man?" "install discord dude" "why aren't you on discord m8?"

>>

There is not push to talk in the web version, which is what the Linux wrapper is.
>>
>>53278960
It doesn't compare. Discord is a centralized service with bare bones audio and server features, but a good chat. It's basically Skype. You even invite people to your group(not an actual server), like skype. It's almost the same as skype actually.
Teamspeak3/mumble is a decentralized audio communication software, with barebones chat. Teamspeak/mumble servers are actual servers, that's why they cost money. If you're not stupid you can rent a ts3+web+more 512 slot server for $5 per month or so, but genpop never think that far of course and choose to pay $20 per month for their 50 slot ts3 server or whatever.
They don't really compete. If your users are fine with discord for voice comms then.. yeh, congrats you have plebs.

My group of friends has had a 20+ person Skype group since 2008. Skype used to be great, but ever since MS bought it, it turned into ads and bugs. The most annoying of which: if the host of a group call is muted and someone else joins, they can't hear anything until the host unmutes.

We just switched to Discord a couple weeks ago, and everyone likes it.
As far as monetization goes, one of the guys working on it said on Reddit that they plan to sell cosmetics, like smilies and shit. He also claimed the only data they collect is for anonymous internal analytics. Even if they're selling it, it can't be worse than Skype's NSA backdoor.
>>
>>53280712
If all you want is chat or talk, skype/discord are ok.
Teamspeak only shines with guilds/parties and lots of people because you can actually manage there. The thing, as you said, is that ts3 cost money and sometimes there is no much reason to spend.
Also, you can still set p2p chat on skype.
>>
>>53280743
Jeez. Why they fuck did he let himself photographed like that? It's like asking to be ridiculed.
>>
>>53280849
that's what i ask myself whenever i see a stallman picture t︂b︂︂h
>>
>>53280779
>If all you want is chat or talk
Do you mean text or voice chat? Because discord has a pretty good text chat with editing and deleting and such. But you're at the mercy of discord servers being up and them not adding bullshit with updates (And they will monetize it, it's just a matter of how bad)

But ts3/mumble doesn't have to be expensive. People who pay a lot are just really good goys. Rent a $5 VPS or set up an old PC(or rpi for mumble) and you can have a 512 slot server + whatever else yo u want. Or you could go on many servers and you're likely to be given a channel and channel admin.

Stallman is autistic at least, he has some sort of excuse. It's typical for autists to not care about how they dress or look like.

Better discord plugin adds loads of features, including embed webm.
