Has anyone installed Linux on their Skylake XPS yet?

How is it performing so far?
>>
>buying anything newer than 2012
gross desu
>>
Friend of mine has it, with highres touchscreen and the whole shebang. GNOME handles scaling really well and he seems happy with it overall.

What the fuck is this Windows 8.1 bullshit on a perfectly nice XPS13? Don't those come with 10?
>>
Another question - did anyone transition to this machine from a Thinkpad? I'm not sure I can handle having to use the touchpad again.
>>
The Zenbook is better.
>>
Haven't set up dualboot, but I run Mint in a VM for some lab work from time to time. Runs perfectly.
>>
>>53258050
but anon, 8.1 is objectively the best version of windows.
>>
>>53260208
Completely different.
>>
>>53256562
why don't you want silent low temp computing?

Heh. My laptop from 2008 idles below 30° and I seldom get to hear its fan when it gets something to work on. Granted, my use case never subjects it to heavy loads but it's not like that would change with a newer machine.

Lower weight and higher resolution is rather attractive, though.
>>
>>53258911
Stop being autistic. You can adapt.
>>
>>53260426
find that hard to believe. what laptop?
>>
>>53260448
Thinkpad X200.
>>
>>53256540
OK Dell, it's been a month since everyone said the new Developer Edition was "soon"

*and* the new thinkpads, while being kind of disappointing are still not out yet either.
>>
>>53260426
I rarely hear my laptop's fan too
but mine is idling at 70C
>>
>>53260257
>full screen search menu
no it's not
>>
>>53260534
>not using classic shell

then how is it better than windows 7?

desu Tbh DESU T B H
>>
>>53256540
I've got last years XPS 13 but have the super high resolution one and I wouldn't advise it. Linux is pretty shit with super high resolutions. So is windows too though. Only OSX can handle it reasonably.

If you just have 1080p it's great tho

this is a test

What did you say instead of senpai senpai?

Oh i see

senpai = f a m
>>
>>53260901
It's more customizable and windows 8.1 has a better task manager and explorer
>>
>>53260947
Better switch to GNOME, friend.
>>
>>53261309
I might give it a try. It kind of sucks watching my PC go along at 1080p

Any XPS 13 2015 users having issues with sound with newer kernel versions? (>4.2)
>>
>>53260956
senpai desu
>>
>>53256540
I have a Skylake XPS 15, one with the 4K screen. GNOME scales really well, but I have constant issues with X crashing on newer kernels. The boot times on the NVMe SSD are pretty poor, too.
>>
>>53263041
Are you dual booting or completely removed windows 10?
>>
>>53263240
Dual booting. I'm a .NET developer, so I can't just wipe it out.
>>
>>53263041
Out of interest, what distribution and kernel versions are we talking about?
>>
>>53263864
Picture related, kernel's from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-nightly/
>>
>>53256607
Newfag
>>
>>53264392
You're surprised that nightly kernels aren't working perfectly?
>>
>>53265105
Even more is broken in the stable mainline builds, I'm just pointing out my experience.
>>
I've been trying intermittently with my xps 15 with no luck. Always out of sync or something
>>
Wondering how making it into a hackintosh would do
>>
>>53264392
>>53265105
>>53265189
For Skylake CPUs its actually recommended to run the current RCs since they add support for some of their features and fix some bugs
>>
>>53256540

I run Arch on it with gnome and it's great. Idling only uses about 4W on battery. If you use linux kernel 4.4, then pretty much everything is supported out of the box.
>>
This laptop is designed for windows just use that, if you wanted gentoo get a thinkpad.
>>
>>53266379
or the developer edition of the XPS
>>
>>53260956
Dont forget cuck
