Storing checksums, parity information, and one or more copies of your backups is likely going to be more than sufficient to handle any godly bitflips or even general hardware failures.

Thanks, I was thinking of using an old pentium 4 laptop as a dedicated SFTP server with automated encryption. It seems like keeping multiple copies will be enough.

Should I just install freeNAS or debian server on zfs? I'd like to utilize more on my CPU other than transcoding I assume freeNAS can't do server stuff unlike debian.

Thoughts?

I'm kind of good friends with one of the net admins at my college. How awkward would it be if I asked him to take some old hardware that the school throws out?

How do I even ask that question?
>>
>>53230469
That's an interesting approach.

I bought an old MSI-Wind PC on ebay for $45. It does server things but only draws 25W of power.

Have you calculated the monthly cost of keeping your server online?

>not having a media server
>not having a file server

try automating things like fighting a DoS and then launching one against it is pretty fun senpai, my server is a virtualization server, so I can spawn up an http server, fuck with it, destroy it and use the ram for another media/file/db/dev server all within 25 minutes.
>>
>>53230576
Nope but the power consumption should be around 250W average. I bought it to store all the crap I hoarded over the years and TiBs of chinese cartoons.

I got the xeon just for transcoding and I want to utilize it further.

I calculated if I ise RaidZ I'll have around 4.4TiB of usable space, thatll get me around until I could buy more disks.

I'm planning on hosting a mumble server for my FFXIV pals and probably a mail server for it. But NAS is my priority

I've got Chinks relentlessly trying to get into my home server and it's driving me nuts. I know these bastards are going to find a way in eventually if I don't take extreme measures. What are my options here? Can I simply block all Asian I.P.'s through iptables or something? From the looks of my logs they're using automated scanners and trying every trick in the book. Please help!

just write a script that checks IP's and how often they do something. I doubt you are hosting 4chan or leddit, if an IP is hitting you more than a once a second it's probably malicious.

Have it check that if an IP hits anything more than x amount of times in 10 sS to a bar and we hung out and talked about free software over some beers.econds, it is banned for 10 minutes; the second time 30 and the third time an hour. Then you can manually check what the IP's were doing and block them permanently if needed.

hold music and movies & make them accessible to multiple devices without having to keep my desktop on 24/7 thereby turning my room into a sauna
hold swfs from /f/ and share via http so I don't have to open an ftp or ssh connection every time I want to play a swf
but I get the most mileage out of it by using it to organize my dank memes

Can I block all Asian IP's? If so, would iptables be a sufficient approach?

1 when I only had a single vdev in there. And 2 drives were DoA when I bought the next 10 disks. So really only a single drive has failed, but the resilvering time is a few days. I'm glad it doesn't happen often.
>>
>>53230441
yea a little bit.

I remember Autodesk having Fedora as one of their supported systems.
Could be the reason for Fedora being used in this instance. but that's pure speculation on my part.
>>
>>53231423
What's up with the high RAM usage?
Transcoding or something?
>>
>>53233092
The ZFS ARC uses assloads of RAM by default. If I didn't have it configured the way I do, it would be using all of it.

yeah, that's really the most efficient solution to a homserver. Power draw is the best thing about it.
Sucks if you have serious storage, expansion or computation needs though.

My school was throwing away monitors and I just asked where they will end up, as they were going to the junkyard I asked if they mind me taking one. It was not really that awkward.
You can also come up with some faked out reason why you would like to have one, like a hobby or personal project.

It's not wise to use freeNAS under a VM

>Nope but the power consumption should be around 250W average.
You're crazy, I have a server with 6 3TB WD Reds and a desktop i5 and it idles at ~50W. It won't get anywhere close to 250W, even at 100% CPU load.
>>
>>53236477
Because they serve completely different purposes?

The point of having a home server is if you need some services to run IN YOUR HOME, like a file or media server.

Do you want to use Samba/NFS over VPN to your VPS or some shit?
>>
I'm currently using an old laptop as my server. It has a Pentium T4200, 4GB DDR2, and a single 300GB hard drive. Obviously, I'm starting to find this sort of lacking.

I need to make a computer for my parents, who are using a 10 year old laptop with broken USB ports and keyboard, with a screen/monitor/mouse connected and used as a desktop.

So, I was thinking, instead of having a completely separate machine, why not run the server as a VM in the computer I'm going to have to build for my parents?

The hardware options in my shithole are slim picking. I'm restricted to only a couple of choices. Seeing as my parents only really read the news and watch youtube videos (and dad heard me talking about muh sekrit klub and now comes here for porn), so they don't need much. I was thinking either an Athlon 5150 or an Atom J1800 board with 4GB of ram and whatever hard drive, which would come in at the same price.

I'd like to keep things low-powered since I don't want to burden mom and dad with a huge electricity bill. So the J1800 is more appealing in that regard, but I'm guessing it's weak as shit. My server does Plex, file hosting, web server, background compile box, and I'd also like to set up something along the lines of a backup server if I had more disk space. My plan is 2 cores for my server, 2 cores for mom and pop, and buying 8GB of RAM, giving 4 to each.

What do you guys think?
>>
>>53236745
But still if you already have a home server why pay for a vps if you can easly virtualize it.
Unless internet at home is slow then vps is a legit reason
>>
>>53236449
Buy a cheap pc from a store and buy a PCI Ethernet adapter (perhaps you can an adapter with two ports, I dunno)

Total cost would be a few hundred imo
>>
>>53237160
There's not much reason to having both a VPS and a home server, but it doesn't work the other way around. You could easily have a use for a VPS but not a home server.
