Are you a Linux user wondering about why someone might choose BSD?
Give this a read: https://www.over-yonder.net/~fullermd/rants/bsd4linux/01

Ask questions, get answers. Anyone going to BSDCan this year?
>>

BSDCan looks awesome. I'm excited about the 8 OpenBSD talks.
http://www.bsdcan.org/2016/list-of-talks.txt
>>
So this is the place to ask questions? Okay, so, I've been planning on installing OpenBSD on my Thinkpad x201. Last time I tried it, suspend would totally break the system, requiring a force restart to make it work.

I know there's supposed to be laptop-sane configs, but there's little to no documentation on it. That or I'm just retarded.

So, anyone run OpenBSD on a laptop? Anything I need to know before diving in?
>>
>>53218223
Always try running from snapshots.
Thinkpad x201 should work very well - when did you last try?

I've been having issues with suspend/resume aswel, its because coreboot doesn't like my current RAM modules.
I now disabled suspend/resume and use hibernation in stead.

It's only 30 minutes away from where I live.

I kind of want to go.
>>
>>53218551
>only 30 minutes away
Why wouldn't you go? Don't worry, there will be many other awkward dudes walking around.
>>
>>53218620
I've never been to a university in my life, but I do know that parking is overpriced as hell.
>>
>>53218496
Thanks for the advice. I last tried in January, actually; did you do any extra config after installing, other than running from snapshots?
>>
BSD has even less driver support than Linux.

Into Le trash it goes
>>
>>53218655
I recommend using spectrwm (tiled) as a window manager for a small thinkpad.
It's lightweight and developed by an OpenBSD user so it just works.
(I run almost everything full-screen and cycle between workspaces).

If you want a "full" DE go for XFCE or Gnome

I use xdm for logging in - but don't enable it during installation, enable it after you're sure your "startx" works.

Do installation with ethernet cable hooked up - Im not sure about the x201 but my x230 needs extra firmware (iwn - wifi firmware) which is downloaded on first boot.

I found those 2 blog posts quite helpful:
http://geekyschmidt.com/2011/03/27/openbsd-laptop-mini-howto
http://eradman.com/posts/openbsd-workstation.html
(Make sure you run apmd).

You could use snap (https://github.com/qbit/snap) for automated snapshot upgrades.

I want to say CWM (which comes with OpenBSD) is enough for any laptop user.

It is one of the best window managers I've ever used.
>>
Does that FreeBSD autist still ruin BSD threads?
>>
>>53218806
Thank you, Anon! This is very good advice. I'll try all this. Thanks again for the info.
>>
>>53218840
Yes.

I'd rather have angelaposting.
>>
>>53218716
That only matters if you want to run it on unsupported hardware. I have ThinkPads and a Sun rack and OpenBSD is fine on them.
>>53218840
I don't know who you're talking about and it can't be me because I don't use FreeBSD so probably not.
>>
>>53218827
I found CWM hard to use because it was so different from all the other stuff out there.
Also, I was spending too much time keeping a "clean" workspace.

>>53218850
Btw, you can browse the ports tree through your webbrowser here: http://openports.se

I also recommend getting http://openports.se/www/youtube-dl and http://openports.se/x11/mplayer
youtube-dl -q -o- $url | mplayer -cache 8192 -

Then put it in something like "Open With" extension to get video working everywhere.

(Firefox&Chrome can be a bit slow on openbsd - its because of the sandboxing and security features, active development is addressing this right now)
>>
>>53218716
Run openbsd, it has much better hardware support and cleaner base code than freebsd.
>>
>>53218827
Spectrwm is a really nice tiler for small laptops. 14" and bigger is where floating WMs start to be useful.
>>
>>53219112
You can also just feed YouTube URLs directly to mpv, which is also in the ports tree.
>>
>>53219112
PS. If you create an account for openports.se, keep in mind that they don't hash passwords.
>>
>>53219145
mpv has a very large number of dependancies, and it doesn't seem to offer anything over mplayer that an average user would need.
>>
FreeBSD: If I use ezjails and ZFS to make "thin jails", how much memory load can I expect one jail to take up, and how much for each additional instance? Assume just the base installation, amd64.

I ask because im looking for an excuse to not buy more memory.
>>
I learned something interesting yesterday about ZFS: one should never place a swap partition on a zpool because of a single drive fails, the swap space would become faulty.

Instead, one should create a swap file, which would be protected in the event of a drive failure.
>>
>>53216818
why would you list opnsense?

Why would you not list pfsense?
>>
>>53216818
Linux has failed me.

Is BSD efficient enough to run on an athlon xp-m 2000+ with 1gb ram and an igpu?
I just want to browse g and write documents.
A basic DE would be nice.

http://www.pcbsd.org/

This looks nice but isn't 32 bit.
>>
>>53219801
It'll run fine, just install OpenBSD and whatever DE/WM you want
>>
Has this thread been approved by your Goddess and leader Randi Harper?
>>
>>53219336
As much as an extra init process takes, so pretty much none.
>>
>>53219858
Who?
>>
>>53219858
>BSD = FreeBSD
Stop that
>>
What the fuck even is OpenBSD, no one uses this shit and probably for good reason. Unless, according to the information you posted, you're a hacker?
>>
>>53219858
you mean the hamplanet who pretends that she's a freebsd dev?

nah but i think she's the kind of person that lurks here desperately for attention
>>
>>53219917
>never heard of it yet thinks he knows something about it
You're a special kind of retarded, aren't you?
>>
>>53219819
Is it similar to linux?
I know linux is Unix like and and BSD is Unix. Not too sure what that means but I'm pretty well adjusted to Fedora linux.
>>
>>53220048
it'll be familiar at least
>>
>>53219866
Sweet
>>
>>53220063
>>53219819
Thanks anons, definitely going to give it a try.
>>
>>53219915
This, plus the FreeBSD devs and the community would prefer it if she died already
>>
>>53219917
If you're going to bait or shitpost, do a decent job. We already have to deal with the FreeBSD autist, we don't need another one
>>
FreeBSD: So I installed the handbook...... How the hell do I read the handbook that I installed? I can't seem to find the answer in the web handbook.
>>
>>53221724
I don't use it, but probably /usr/share/doc.
