So six weeks from now I'll be going on a missionary trip to the DRC for the next two years.
I want to bring a laptop in order to stay in contact with friends and family.
What is a decent laptop I could get right now for less than $300 that could last those two years?
I have been looking at pic related. It's about $250. Is it worth that price?

Assuming you don't beat the shit out it, I'd go with the x220. I'm assuming that one in OP pic is used, so make sure to get a new battery before you go, unless you're going to be plugged in all the time. Overall, x220 slightly lighter, and IMO has a better screen and battery life (but again, moot point if it's plugged in the whole time). It's not quite as pretty as the T420 but I don't really see that as a problem.
whatever you choose, make sure you can get a bunch of extra batteries to plug in to it
Don't get a tablet one if you don't need it. x220 will travel lighter than a t420.
Just get the cheapest one you can find, those niggers will rip it out of your hands as soon as you get off the plane anyways.

I got one for $160 and love everything except the battery life, So I got a slice battery and that works for me, but makes it pretty bulky. If battery life+light weight is a concern I suggest the non tablet one...

Had played with a x220t as well as x220. I will say the x220 does hold up better overall. I got mine for 150 with i7+9-cell+IPS in mint condition. Some say the trackpad is poor but it's actually far better than most modern laptops (though no magic trackpad). IMO, if touch isn't that important x220 is the superior solution; cheaper and more durable. I'm not too familiar with the battery life of the x220t as I've never drained it, but the x220 lasts for about 7 hours of browsing and intermittent medium load work (editing + compilation + watching videos on mpv + music). Idle will easily run nearly 12 hours even on Linux if you use pm-utils/laptop-mode, and mine personally has already decayed to about ~90% battery life over 2-3 years.
