How do you prevent RSI?

My right wrist grinds when I move it and my upper arm often feels sore. What do?

I've got a chair with lumbar support, use a mouse pad, and keep my wrists level with the keyboard/mouse. What do?

If it's just you're right wrist it's probably your mouse usage, not typing.

Look up exercises to do every 30 minutes to an hour than you're on your PC.

convince me not to, /g/. My laptop's trackpad is so much less RSI strain than a mouse

That'll just give you RSI in your fingers.

Also, I think you're lying.

Life changing shit right here

I was struggling with the wrist pain until I added the stretches bruh

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTxQqu9USC4
>>
>>53092153
Mouse with both hands. Worth it in the long run.
>>
>>53092874
I have that touchpad and it's OK as far as touchpads go but it's still pretty shit. Since you're depressing the actual touch surface for clicking you have to keep the sensitivity low so you don't accidentally move the cursor off the object you're clicking. this means that you have to swipe a number of times to get from one edge of the screen to the other. It's a pain.
>>
>>53093598
I'd also like to add that you might find a touchpad mouse a better alternative. The elecom is also a lot better than the logitech.
>>
>>53093612
shit I meant trackball mouse.
>>
I've been expressing the glands in the wrist religiously lately and it's helped me a lot.
>>
>>53092180
My armrest doesn't go that high up.

Usually an armrest isn't designed to do that.
>>
1. look up wrist flexor and wrist extensor stretches on google
2. after you take a shower, do those
3. get two difference mice, use them interchangeably over the course of one day
4. move your mousepad every 5 minutes during mouse use
5. after wrist activity, use a dixie cup filled with ice and rub the area near your elbow in circular pattern for 5 minutes; then apply light heat
6. consider obtaining a $10 wrist extension brace with the metal support under the palm - use it when typing
7. consider inactivating the arm that hurts for a week - compensate with the other arm
8. use antiinflammatory medications like tylenol over a 3 day period if there is a lot of heat around the joints and muscles

why do all this: frequent change in position of the elbow and wrist, and change of the static position of the hand during mouse use (or trackball use) decrease the tension on the tendon and muscles in the same regions; external support of the wrist and hand alter the leverage forces acting on tendons and relieve sites of strain that are most frequent; inactivating the arm entirely allows continuous healing; adjusting length of certain muscles diminishes sources of tendon strain due to naturally opposing muscle action.

all the other recommendations sound great also
>>

>>
>>53093753
Paracetamol does nothing for inflammation
>>
>>53092989
Nope. Clicking with the trackpad requires a lot less effort than click with the mouse. For scrolling I move my whole arm rather than my fingers or wrist. Come to think of it, the position and small size of the trackpad may be the benefit, not just the touch surface of it

>>53093598
>you're depressing the actual touch surface for clicking
fug, I hate those. I was going to ignore any physical clicking and just use the touch

>>53093612
>>53093626
I'm considering a trackball but I want to avoid any physical clicking. I'll see what happens.

Too much use of the pinky, you're getting RSI. Try using the right control key with a stronger finger instead of contorting your left hand for shortcuts.

put something underneath the arm rest to elevate it
>>
>>53093738
>>53095667
I'd recommend getting slide out keyboard, or getting a short adjustable desk with a second level for the monitors.
If the arms rests are really high it'll raise your shoulders uncomfortably. If you lift the chair seat you'll get more pressure on your thighs. Adjust the chair to something comfortable, then get or adjust a desk to match.
>>
>>53095909
Standing desks actually work well for this. Not for standing but for adjusting the height to an exact level for your armrests and chair height to be adjusted correctly. Or just get a table with adjustable legs.
>>
>>53095965
yet another reason for me to get a convertable standing desk

I don't have issues with RSI, but I have dry skin on some of my right hand fingers. Anyone else?

It's those fingers that touch the mouse buttons and scroll wheel, hand is lying on the table most of the time...

Are trackballs really good to prevent RSI?
I'm afraid of this shit and indifferent between using a mouse or a trackball as long as I have easy access to scrolling and "middle button click"

Recently I get autistic about typing with my whole 10 fingers to refrain my wrist to take strange angles as I shitpost on the interweb.
>>
>>53097581
I get dry knuckles. Best thing to do is not let it get dry/dead because it's much more difficult to get healthy from there. You'll need to keep lotion at your desk, at work, etc so that it never reaches the bad stage. To everyone else it'll look like your wank bottle though.
>>
>>53097724
>>53093239
yeah they're pretty legit. My friend works in a factory and these kinds of stretches are required every day. Go easy at first.
>>
>>53097731
Wouldn't it be counterintuitive to get a trackball to try and alleviate wrist pain? You'll still be bending that wrist upwards, so what's the point?
>>
I use a memory foam wristpad; usually in the memory foam pillows there's a little sample where the window for the customer to touch was, and I just stole that for a wristpad.
>>
>>53097764
The carpal tunnel would not get crushed and keeping the wrist angle constant would reduce the stress.
>>
>>53097731

Get a vertical mouse, not a trackball.
>>
>>53097803
Fair enough.
Vertical mouse look ridiculous tho. This is the price to pay for prevention I guess.
>>
>>53092180
I like to have my keyboard far away so the weight doesnt really rest on my wrist but almost on my elbows
>>
>>53092528
That's not how you play piano though.
>>
>>53097792
Wouldn't the same hold true (more or less) for a very high dpi mouse where short distance hand movement translates into long distance cursor movement?
>>

best ergo keyboard/mouse coming through
>>
>>53097899
I'm considering getting the ultimate hacker keyboard when it comes out. Split and portable.
>>
>>53092874
color me surprised, but it's exactly the opposite for me

Ever since I got a MacBook a few years ago and started using the trackpad almost exclusively, I started getting horrible wrist pain in my right wrist.

I went to like 4 doctors, they even did an xray but obviously nothing was found (I'm not a hypochondriac at all, I rarely ever go to the doctor, but I need my fucking right hand, so fuck that).

But once I started going back and doing my work on my
gaymen rig
with my
gaymen mouse
, it went completely away.

I can do 12hours per day on a Desktop with regular mouse and keyboard, no problems. And I don't even do any kind of special stretches or have special ergonomical gear or do a special posture.
As I said, most of it is gaming tier peripherals I bought when I was 16.

But 3 hours on a Laptop with trackpad and the wrist pain comes back.
>>
>>53097867
I can't into precise movements. Else, I would be studying surgery instead of fancy ways to tell a computer to (poorly) simulate physics laws.

And my time spend on /g/ brainwashed me into thinking that trackballs are a meme worth trying.
>>
>tfw Linux user
>terrible RSI from the mouse
>switch to Mac
>solved

There's something fundamentally wrong with the way GNU/Linux handles mouse acceleration.
>>
I used to go to work and sit in front of a computer for 8 to 10 hours. Then I would go home and play an MMO for a couple of hours. Eventually my wrist started bothering me. Then I forced myself to use my left hand...then that wrist started hurting.

I bought a trackball. And that helped a little at first. But I eventually discovered that trackballs are just a different type of repetitive motion.

As others have already mentioned ITT, the best way to get rid of the pain it to:
1) Take breaks
2) Sit/Type properly
3) Stretch

I love my trackball. But it isn't a solution to the problem.

I have one. It's not THE best but it's pretty good. I like scissors keys and how slim it is. I think it'd be better if it was more of a straight edge "V" shape rather than the dipping in the center. It'd be easier to hit shift and ctrl with a V shape.

I don't think I can recover from RSI/Carpaltunnel Syndrom just using conservative tricks.

I need a surgery, hopefully the health care will pay it.

I mean, I have no pain, but when grabbing stuff, my right hand goes numb.
I cannot exert much strength anymore.
>>
>>53099402
just FYI, RSI and carpal tunnel are two entirely different things

Most people who think they have carpal tunnel, don't. It's really mostly women.
